Vaccination against hepatitis viruses in Poland.

At present, two etiologic varieties of viral hepatitis (VH) can be directly vaccine-preventable: VH type A and VH type B. In addition, VH type D can be prevented indirectly through vaccination against VH-B. The first commercially available vaccine against VH-B appeared in 1981 and was human plasma-derived. After several years, it has generally been replaced by a recombinant type of vaccines. The obvious benefits of vaccination against VH-B prompted its introduction into the national immunization program in Poland in 1989. At that time, vaccination was offered free of charge to high-risk groups

Genetically modified viruses: vaccines by design.

Vaccination has been one of the most successful and cost-effective health interventions ever employed. One disease (smallpox) has been eradi … se important infections. One of the most promising has been the development of genetically modified viruses. This process normally involves taking a proven safe and efficacious vaccine virus, such as vaccinia or adenovirus, and modifying its genome to include genes coding for immunogenic proteins from other viruses such as HIV or measles. This review will …

Mucosal dendritic cells and immunodeficiency viruses.

Dendritic cells [DCs] have been implicated in the pathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). When skin was used as a model for mucosae, the cutaneous DC-T cell milieu allowed the growth of HIV-1 and much of the newly produced virus could be detected in multinucleated DC-T cell syncytia. Such virus replication occurs irrespective of the genetic subtype, the syncytium- and non-syncytium-inducing capacities of the viruses, and whether they are classified as T cell- or macrophage-tropic. Similar DC-syncytia have been identified within the mucosal surfaces of the tonsillar tissue …

Selenium and host defence towards viruses.

The association between viral disease and nutrition has long been thought to be due to effects on the host immune system. This theory suggests that when a host is malnourished, the immune system is compromised, and thus increased susceptibility to viral infection will occur. However, the virus itself may also be affected by the nutritional status of the host. We have demonstrated that a normally-benign strain of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3/0) becomes virulent in either Se-deficient or vitamin E-deficient mice. Although the deficient animals are immunosuppressed, the virus itself is also altered. S

Genetic conservation of Highlands J viruses.

We studied molecular evolution of the mosquito-borne alphavirus Highlands J (HJ) virus by sequencing PCR products generated from 19 strains isolated between 1952 and 1994. Sequences of 1200 nucleotides including portions of the E1 gene and the 3' untranslated region revealed a relatively slow evolutionary rate estimated at 0.9-1.6 x 10(-4) substitutions per nucleotide per year. Phylogenetic trees indicated that all HJ viruses descended from a common ancestor and suggested the presence of one dominant lineage in North America. However, two or more minor lineages probably circulated simultaneous…

Viruses, neurodevelopmental disorder and childhood psychosis.

Four cases are described of prepubertal boys in whom the convergence of neurodevelopmental disorder, viral infection and psychosis seemed mo … ing the presence of viral infection should encourage us to consider more carefully the relevance of viruses in childhood psychosis.

Tumor viruses, oncogenes, and human cancer.

We review the biology of transforming retroviruses and their relationship to cellular transforming genes (tumor oncogenes). Evidence is discussed for the involvement of a retrovirus in a newly described syndrome, "adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma," which has a high incidence of skin involvement. This virus is related to the animal retroviruses which induce tumors in susceptible hosts after a long latent period. Cellular transforming genes encode proteins which directly change the oncogenic potential of a cell. These genes, which are altered forms of normal cellular genes, have been isolated from…

Viruses isolated from bats in Japan.

Virus isolation has been attempted from the blood, spleen, liver and kidneys of bats. Nine viruses (1.1 per cent) have been isolated so far from 838 bats collected in different places in Japan. Two of the isolates (TOK-1350 and TOK-1362) were isolated from Vespertilio supernas collected in Fukushima Prefecture. They killed suckling mice within 3-5 days after intracerebral inoculation. The remaining seven isolates were all filtrable through Millipore filters (0.22 micron) and were pathogenic for suckling mice but not adults. One of seven strains (KY-5) was ether resistant and another (TOK-292) …

Detection of human herpes viruses in patients with chronic and aggressive periodontitis and relationship between viruses and clinical parameters.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recent microbiological researches have revealed the possible role of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), Epstein barr virus (EBV), and herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) in the etiopathogenesis of periodontal diseases. The present pilot study has been undertaken to detect the presence of these viruses in chronic periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis, and healthy individuals and to determine the relationship between these viruses and the clinical parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 10 patients belonging to the age group of 18 to 55 years were included. The patien…
