[Sensory and current political weaknesses of prismatic correction with the Polatest].

BACKGROUND: The adherence of the Polatest try to enforce prismatic correction in cases of heterophoria, asthenopia, dyslexia and other kinds of disorders. They claim that some sensorial anomalies exist which can be diagnosed only by the Polatest and for which special terminology is used. The Polatest-Doctrine in microtropias, subnormal binocular vision and obligate fixation disparity leads to excessive amount of prisms and unnecessary eye muscle surgery. METHOD AND CONCLUSION: The reason for this is the erroneous interpretation of the Stereo-test with the two triangles, where it is not possib

Re-evaluation of the four prism diopter base-out test.

The four prism diopter base-out (4 delta BO) test is often recommended for use as an objective assessment of binocular visual function in patients with suspected microstrabismus or central suppression; however, many aspects of the test are unknown. In this series of investigations we evaluated: (1) inter-observer agreement between 2 examiners, using 15 subjects; (2) types of eye movements made and prevalence of the various response types demonstrated in 212 children and 116 adults with normal binocular vision, and 10 children and 4 adults with abnormal binocular vision; and (3) repeatability o

Functional retinal outcomes in patients with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

PURPOSE: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a leading cause of visual impairment. Its precursor, prediabetes (preDM), is growing in numbers every year. While it is well known that T2DM causes changes in retinal function early in the disease process, it is likely that some of these changes emerge during the preDM stage. This study evaluates retinal function measures in patients with preDM to determine if there are differences in colour vision, contrast sensitivity (CS), and multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) measures present before T2DM is diagnosed. METHODS: The L'Anthony desaturated D-15 test, Mars

Aniseikonia Tests: A Review of Current Measurement Methods.

PURPOSE: Aniseikonia, a perceptual asymmetry in ocular image size or shape, disrupts binocular vision and stereopsis. Aniseikonia testing is essential for quantifying visual dysfunction and improving prognosis. This review aims to evaluate advances in aniseikonia testing, with emphasis on clinical utility and methodological limitations. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted to synthesize evidence on traditional and digital approaches to aniseikonia assessment, with attention to testing principles and clinical applications. RESULTS: Traditional afocal lens methods have been supplanted by

Two-Dimensional Peripheral Refraction and Higher-Order Wavefront Aberrations Induced by Orthokeratology Lenses Decentration.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore two-dimensional peripheral refraction and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) induced by orthokeratology lens decentration. METHODS: Two-dimensional peripheral refraction and HOAs in a rectangular field (horizontally 60 degrees and vertically 36 degrees) were obtained using an open-view Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. The peripheral field was divided into 8 regions according to a combination of superior (UZ) or inferior (LZ) and a value, 1 (T25 to T30), 2 (T20 to T25), 3 (N20 to N25), or 4 (N25 to N30). The decentration of the lens was evaluated

The prevalence of optometric anomalies and symptoms in children receiving special tuition.

A case-control study was performed where 9 pupils receiving special tuition (ST-group) were compared with 36 controls. Six (66.7%) of the pupils in the ST-group were diagnosed as dyslexic. No significant correlation was revealed between receiving special tuition and having reduced visual function, nor between reduced visual function and number of visually related symptoms. Although the number of symptoms was not significantly greater in the ST-group, some of the symptoms were significantly more common in the ST-group, and none were significantly more common in the control group.

The influence of heterophoria measurements on subsequent associated phoria measurement in a refractive routine.

The influence of measuring heterophoria on a subsequent associated phoria measurement was investigated in 50 subjects. After refraction, heterophoria was measured by either von Graefe's technique or Maddox rod and wing. The effect of these procedures was assessed by associated phoria measurements taken before and after the dissociated measures. It is shown that subjects with a history of unstable binocular vision are likely to have an associate phoria induced or changed by the previous dissociated phoria measurement, particularly if von Graefe's technique is employed. It is recommended that, e

[Evaluation of visual acuity of small children with preferential looking methods].

With preferential looking (PL) techniques, especially the Acuity Card Procedure (Teller Acuity Cards), the visual acuity in small children can be determined. PL-testing was used in 294 children in the Strabismus and Amblyopia Department of the Ophthamology Hospital in Kraków. These children had been directed from other ophthalmologic departments. Almost all of them showed general retardation and their visual acuity could not be tested with traditional methods. The testing was considered positive when the visual acuity of each eye could be determined separately. Such result was obtained in 230

Peripheral visual acuity with monovision and other contact lens corrections for presbyopia.

We have conducted two experiments to investigate the effect of monovision and other contact lens corrections for presbyopia upon peripheral visual acuity. In the first study, we measured binocular peripheral visual acuity using Landolt rings with seven subjects wearing a monovision correction. The Landolt rings were presented at eccentricities of 10, 20, 40, and 70 degrees on each side of the subject, with near additions of +1.50 D, +2.50 D, and no addition. We found no significant effect of monovision correction on peripheral visual acuity. In the second experiment we measured the peripheral

[Detection of vision disorders in newborn infants and children].

Early detection of visual deficits is of most importance in childhood. To be adequately treated; it requires systematic screening before 18 months of age. Basic tests include objective refraction study (skiascopy), preferential sight test with estimation of visual acuity which is possible after 3 months of age, and, if poor vision, is found, electroretinography evoked visual potentials is performed. Many disorders can be recognized early on and treated (mainly strabismus, congenital cataract or glaucoma). The early correction of refractive disorders results in good visual development and subse

[The mechanism of inhibition of binocular vision in convergent strabismus (author's transl)].

The mechanism of inhibition of binocular vision (at a cortical level in the Pavlovian sense) in convergent strabismus is described. The study concerns both those patients whith no amblyopia and those whose amblyopia has been cured. Part one of the article describe the clinical characteristics of this cortical inhibition as shown by the polarised light stereoscopic projector. Some basic concepts with this therapeutic application are described in part two. In this paper the author suggests a relationships between the severity of inhibition of binocularity and the degree of disturbance in spatial

Color vision improves foraging success and accelerates reproduction in a jumping spider.

Color vision is thought to convey fitness advantages during foraging, but empirical tests of this idea are exceedingly rare. We manipulated prey color cues in tests with the trichromatic jumping spider Habronattus pyrrithrix to assess whether their ability to use their color vision affected foraging success and reproduction. Mated adult female spiders were first trained to associate the color red with experimentally manipulated unpalatable (bitter) prey and then tested to confirm that they learned this association (independent of brightness cues). They were then divided into 2 treatment groups

Constructional ability in two- versus three-dimensions: relationship to spatial vision and locus of cerebrovascular lesion.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical evaluation and research on constructional ability have come to rely almost exclusively on two-dimensional tasks such as graphomotor copying or mosaic Block Design (BD). A return to the inclusion of a third dimension in constructional tests may increase the spatial demands of the task, and improve understanding of the relationship between visual perception and constructional ability in patients with cerebral disease. METHOD: Subjects were patients (n=43) with focal or multifocal cerebrovascular lesions as determined by CT or MRI. Tests of temporal orientation, verbal int

Vision training for presbyopic nonstrabismic patients.

Home vision training was prescribed for 161 presbyopic patients (ages 45 to 89) who had vision-related symptoms and convergence insufficiency or visual skills deficiencies. Most patients required 10 weeks or less of treatment, the longest treatment period being 15 weeks. Elimination of the symptoms and improved responses on certain optometric tests was achieved by 92% of the patients. Evaluation 3 months after therapy indicated that 77 patients required additional training, the older patients requiring it more often, to retain the initial improvement.

Do dissociated or associated phoria predict the comfortable prism?

BACKGROUND: Dissociated and associated phoria are measures of latent strabismus under artificial viewing conditions. We examined to what extent dissociated and associated phoria predict the "comfortable prism", i.e. the prism that appears most comfortable under natural viewing conditions. METHODS: For associated phoria, a configuration resembling the Mallett test was employed: both eyes were presented with a fixation cross, surrounded by fusionable objects. Nonius lines served as monocular markers. For dissociated phoria, the left eye was presented with all the Mallett elements, while only a

Neuro-ophthalmologic disorders following concussion.

Visual symptoms, such as photophobia and blurred vision, are common in patients with concussion. Such symptoms may be accompanied by abnormalities of specific eye movements, such as saccades and convergence, or accommodation deficits. The high frequency of visual involvement in concussion is not surprising, since more than half of the brain's pathways are dedicated to vision and eye movement control. These areas include many that are most vulnerable to head trauma, including the frontal and temporal lobes. Vision and eye movement testing is important at the bedside and on the sidelines of athl

[Testing and approach when non-organic visual loss is suspected].

Approximately 5% of the patients in the ophthalmological practice suffer from non-organic vision loss. In children non-organic vision loss has been observed from the age of 6 years. In order to be able to make a rapid diagnosis knowledge of the relevant clinical tests is decisive. If a patient shows signs of non-organic visual loss, diagnostic externalization of the visual function is crucial. Depending on the symptoms there are various tests, which can be used to differentiate between organic and non-organic disorders. For therapeutic and economic reasons an early diagnosis of a non-organic v

[Arden test for early glaucomatous damage (author's transl)].

With the aid of the Arden grading test 27 eyes with early glaucomatous visual field defects and 80 normal control eyes were examined in a double-blind study. Eighteen eyes with early glaucomatous visual field defects had values which were clearly higher (83-130) than the control eyes. In nine of the diseased eyes Arden scores were 68-82, i.e., similar to those obtained in the normal eyes.
