In Vitro Digestibility of Minerals and B Group Vitamins from Different Brewers' Spent Grains.

Brewers' spent grain (BSG), the main by-product of the brewing industry, is a rich source of minerals and water-soluble vitamins such as thiamine, pyridoxine, niacin, and cobalamin. Bioaccessibility through in vitro digestion is an important step toward the complete absorption of minerals and B group vitamins in the gastrointestinal system. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) together with inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the quantification of the macro- and micro-minerals. An ultra-high performance liquid chromatograp

[Homocysteine levels: measure or not?].

An increase in the fasting plasma homocysteine concentration, even within the 'normal range', is a strong and independent predictor of cardiovascular risk. Low concentrations of specific B vitamins and decreased renal function are the most common causes of hyperhomocysteinaemia. Interventional trials with B vitamins showed a decrease in homocysteine levels, but no decrease in cardiovascular disease rates. There are several methodological concerns that preclude the drawing of definite conclusions from the trials; these include the fact that only very mild hyperhomocysteinaemia (>20 μmol/l) was

Effect of prenatal vitamin supplementation on lower-genital levels of HIV type 1 and interleukin type 1 beta at 36 weeks of gestation.

Micronutrient status has been associated with shedding of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in the lower-genital tract in observational studies. We examined the effect of vitamin supplements on genital HIV-1 shedding and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta ), a cytokine marker of vaginal inflammation and promotion of HIV-1 infection. Consenting HIV-1-infected pregnant women were randomized to receive daily supplementation with vitamin A and/or multivitamins B-complex, C, and E with use of a factorial design. Cervicovaginal lavage (CVL) specimens were obtained shortly before delivery. Signi

A Comparison of Vitamin and Lutein Concentrations in Breast Milk from Four Asian Countries.

Vitamins are the essential elements for human life and, particularly, for infant health. Human milk is the best source of nutrients for newborns, however, the information of vitamins in Asian maternal milk is still limited. In this study, we have collected 580 Asian maternal milk samples from Korea (n = 254), China (n = 137), Pakistan (n = 92), and Vietnam (n = 97). The vitamin concentrations, including vitamin B-groups (8 vitamins), fat-soluble vitamin (retinol, D, E, K) and lutein in the breast milk of were investigated. The concentration of thiamin (B1), biotin (B7), and folic acid (B9) in

Vitamins in diet of patients with metabolic syndrome.

Aim - analysis of data on the role of vitamin and carotenoid deficiency in the development of metabolic syndrome (MS), the consumption of individual vitamins and vitamin supplements, as well as estimation of the effectiveness of the use of vitamins in patients with MS. A review of the existing literature has been carried out in the databases of RINC, CyberLeninka, Google Scholar, Pubmed. The lack of vitamins is a risk factor for MS and its components. The diet of people with MS is characterized by excessive caloric content and at the same time contains an inadequate amount of most vitamins. Th

Preconception serum 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2,bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane and B-vitamin status: independent and joint effects on women's reproductive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Although preconception 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2,bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) exposure and B-vitamin deficiencies have each been shown to negatively affect human reproductive outcomes, little is known about their joint effect. OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine whether B-vitamin sufficiency protects against adverse effects of DDT on clinical pregnancy (CP) and subclinical early pregnancy loss (EPL). DESIGN: We measured preconception concentrations of plasma B vitamins (vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, and folate) and serum total DDT [sum of p,p' and o,p' isomers of DDT and 1,1-dichloro-2,2-b

B-vitamins and one-carbon metabolism during pregnancy: health impacts and challenges.

Folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and riboflavin interact by functioning as cofactors within one-carbon metabolism (OCM), a network of interrelated cellular pathways essential for numerous biological processes, including the biosynthesis of DNA, amino acid interconversions and methylation reactions. The pathways of OCM are influenced by endocrine signals and genetic polymorphisms and are particularly responsive to relevant B-vitamin intakes. Physiological changes in healthy pregnancy, leading to a steady decline in B-vitamin status, add another layer of complexity to the regulation of OCM. Altho

An unusually high plasma concentration of homocysteine resulting from a combination of so-called "secondary" etiologies.

The metabolism of homocysteine is complex and involves many enzymes as well as vitamin-derived cofactors. Any dysregulation of this metabolism may lead to hyperhomocysteinemia (HHCy) which is responsible for many clinical disorders including thromboembolic events. HHCy may result from very different etiologies and is generally classified into three groups according to homocysteine concentrations: moderate (<30 µmol/L), intermediate (30-100 µmol/L) or major (>100 μmol/L). Major HHCy cases are generally due to monogenic defects of key enzymes involved in homocysteine metabolism, such as cystathi

Vitamin B12 deficiency causing night sweats.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is common. It is known to cause a wide spectrum of neurological syndromes, including autonomic dysfunction. Three cases are discussed here in which drenching night sweats were thought to be caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. All three responded dramatically to vitamin B12 therapy.

Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in children with iron deficiency anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.

Paraoxonase-1 is an esterase enzyme and it has 3 types of activity, namely paraoxonase, arylesterase, and diazoxonase. It has been reported that paraoxonase-1 deficiency is related to increased susceptibility to development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in children with iron deficiency anemia and vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia. Thirty children with iron deficiency anemia, 30 children with vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia, and 40 healthy children aged 6 months to 6 years were enrolled in this

B-vitamins and prevention of dementia.

Elevated plasma homocysteine (Hcy) concentrations have been implicated with risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, but it is unclear whether low vitamin B12 or folate status is responsible for cognitive decline. Most studies reporting associations between cognitive function and Hcy or B-vitamins have used a cross-sectional or case-control design and have been unable to exclude the possibility that such associations are a result of the disease rather than being causal. The Hcy hypothesis of dementia has attracted considerable interest, as Hcy can be easily lowered by folic acid and vitamin

[Severe anemia in a young woman. Description of a rare coincidence].

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 25-year-old woman was admitted because of severe anemia and exercise-induced tachypnea and dyspnea. She had no gastrointestinal symptoms and reported no allergies. The family history did not reveal any obvious or familial disease. DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT AND COURSE: Whole blood analysis showed severe macrocytic anemia. The vitamin B12 level was reduced and biopsies revealed autoimmune gastritis and typical megaloblastic changes in the bone marrow. Gastroscopy showed marked mucosal atrophy as seen in celiac disease. Vitamin B12 was administered parenterally and s
