Microbial mechanisms driving enhanced short-chain fatty acid and alcohol production during food waste fermentation via biochar addition in the pilot-scale reactor.

Maximizing carbon resources derived from food waste (FW) has attracted substantial global attention. This study investigated the mechanism of two types of biochar (bamboo-biochar and coconut shell-biochar) on FW anaerobic fermentation in a pilot-scale reactor. The results showed that biochar addition increased the concentrations of acetate, propionate, ethanol, and n-propanol during the 10-day fermentation period. Among these carbon resource, acetate and n-propanol were the primary components. During the first 7-day fermentation, bamboo-biochar and coconut shell-biochar increased the concentra

Sustainable treatment and resource recovery from PCB acidic etching waste solution: Co-production technology of basic copper carbonate and copper oxide and transformation mechanisms.

This study tackled the persistent challenges of low purity and limited diversity in recycled materials obtained from printed circuit board (PCB) acidic copper chloride etching waste solution (ACCEWS). High-purity Cu2(OH)2CO3 was first synthesized from purified ACCEWS (in contrast to raw waste solutions) using a Na2CO3-NaHCO3 buffer system. Subsequent alkaline treatment yielded crude CuO, which was then upgraded to high-purity CuO via calcination. Simultaneously, the effects of impurities on the purity, phase composition, and morphology of copper compounds were systematically investigated by XR

Insights into Fe(Ⅱ)-sulfite-based pretreatment strategy for enhancing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from waste activated sludge: Performance and mechanism.

This paper proposed a concept of "co-treating" waste activated sludge (WAS) with waste-derived sulfite and environmentally-friendly ferrous iron. The maximal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from WAS anaerobic fermentation ascended by 27.1 times after pretreated by Fe(Ⅱ) activated sulfite with a sulfite dosage of 500 mg S/L and a Fe(Ⅱ)/sulfite ratio of 1.25. Mechanism explorations elucidated that the production of SO4·- and ·OH induced by Fe(Ⅱ)-activated sulfite-auto-oxidation remarkably promoted the disintegration of WAS and the biodegradability of dissolved organic matter, leading

Production of biodiesel from waste fish fat through ultrasound-assisted transesterification using petro-diesel as cosolvent and optimization of process parameters using response surface methodology.

Biodiesel is a highly promising and viable alternative to fossil-based diesel that also addresses the urgent need for effective waste management. It can be synthesized by the chemical modification of triglycerides sourced from vegetable origin, animal fat, or algal oil. The transesterification reaction is the preferred method of producing biodiesel. However, the non-miscibility of alcohol and oil layer causes excessive utilization of alcohol, catalyst, and a substantial reacting time and temperature. In the current investigation, transesterification of waste fish oil was performed with petro-d
