Wildfires pose an escalating threat to the oak-dominated forests of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where long-term fire trends and predictors have remained poorly quantified. This study assessed interannual variability and long-term trends in total and forest-specific burned area from 2001 to 2024, examined spatial differences, and identified primary climatic predictors of fire extent using MODIS MCD64A1 Version 6.1 burned-area data masked to a 2024 NDVI-based forest mask (~ 10,660 km2). Across the entire Kurdistan Region, burned area averaged 687 km2 year⁻1 (SD = 640 km2), totalled 16,486 km2 …

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from wildfire/biomass-burning emissions (BB) represents a significant fraction of global SOA production. However, there are large uncertainties in representing BB-SOA in climate models. We studied the evolution of organic aerosols (OA) from burning three biomass samples─savannah grass, savannah wood, and boreal forest surface─under different combustion conditions and during daytime (photochemical oxidation) and nighttime (dark oxidation) aging in an atmospheric chamber. OA dominated the BB emissions by contributing ∼82-99% of the total PM1 mass. Atmospher

Accurate and rapid mapping of burned areas is critical for understanding the impacts of forest fires on ecosystems, the carbon cycle, and post-fire recovery processes. Traditional pixel-based approaches often provide limited accuracy due to spectral confusion, topographic variability, and sensitivity to empirically defined threshold values. Although deep learning frameworks such as U-Net, DeepLab, and SegFormer have achieved substantial improvements in spatial accuracy in recent years, their operational scalability remains constrained by the need for labeled training data and region-specific r

INTRODUCTION: Utility companies in California de-energize equipment during periods of high wildfire risk. These Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) are designed to prevent power lines from igniting wildfires. The loss of electricity and subsequent failure of traffic signals may increase the risk of motor-vehicle crashes.
METHODS: We determined the daily number of motor-vehicle crashes per county for all 58 California counties between September 15th and November 30th, 2019, a period of high wildfire risk. We obtained electrical circuit-level information from the California Public Utilities Com…

Wildfires are a natural disturbance in dry ponderosa pine forest ecosystems, and are increasing in frequency and severity across western North America. The effects of wildfire on biotic and abiotic conditions have important implications for higher trophic levels, including native bees. We sought to quantify the responses of flowering plants to fire age and severity and determine the effects of these shifts on pollinator richness through time. We sequenced pollen from pan and blue vane traps deployed every 2 weeks from April to August in 2022 and 2023 to quantify shifts in foraging resources fo…

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence linking exposure to landscape fires to child health remains scarce. We assessed the association between daily landscape fire smoke and child hospital visits and admissions in the Manhiça district, Mozambique, an area characterised by frequent forest and cropland fires.
METHODS: In this time-series analysis (2012-20), our primary metric for exposure to landscape fires was fire-originated PM2·5 from smoke dispersion hindcasts. We also assessed total and upwind fire exposure using daily satellite-derived fire density data. Daily numbers of hospital visits and

Physical employment standards evaluate whether a worker possesses the physical abilities to safely and efficiently perform all critical on-the-job tasks. Initial Attack (IA) wildland fire fighters (WFF) must perform such critical tasks in all terrains. Following a physical demands analysis, IA WFF (n = 946 out of a possible 965) from all fire jurisdictions ranked the most demanding tasks and identified mountains, muskeg and rolling hills as the most challenging terrains. Experimental trials found the oxygen cost (mean ± SD V˙ O2 mL·kg-1·min-1) while performing the hose pack back carry to be 40

OBJECTIVE: To prevent power lines from igniting wildfires, utility companies in California are authorized to conduct Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), de-energizing, or shutting off power to equipment during periods of high wildfire risk. This study assessed the association between PSPS and emergency department visits.
METHODS: The study quantified the extent to which counties in California experienced PSPS each day between September 15 and November 30, 2019. Linear mixed models were used to estimate the rate of emergency department encounters per 100,000 county residents based on quartile…

Increasingly frequent and intense wildfires threaten to push ecosystems beyond their ecological thresholds. Fire-adapted forests can be vulnerable to ecosystem conversion under shortening fire-return intervals. To evaluate the impacts of fire regime change, we contrasted Eucalyptus forests that retained canopy cover under tolerable regimes (reference forests) with alternative states of markedly reduced canopy. These alternative states established following short-interval wildfires and have persisted through subsequent fires. Alternative states were dominated by more uniform distributions of sm…

A common feature of large-scale extreme events, such as pandemics, wildfires, and major storms is that, despite their differences in etiology and duration, they significantly change routine human movement patterns. Such changes, which can be major or minor in size and duration and which differ across contexts, affect both the consequences of the events and the ability of governments to mount effective responses. Based on naturally tracked, anonymized mobility behavior from over 90 million people in the United States, we document these mobility differences in space and over time in six large-sc…

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the impacts of maternal exposure to acute episodes of outdoor air pollution, such as that resulting from wildfires, on obstetric and neonatal outcomes. This systematic review aims to synthesise the existing literature exploring the relationship between maternal exposure to short-to medium-term changes in outdoor air quality and obstetric and neonatal outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic search of peer-reviewed articles using PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, ProQuest, GreenFILE and Scopus was conducted in January 2018 using selected …

The environmental effect of biomass burning smoke-derived dissolved organic matter (BBS-DOM) has attracted growing attention due to the increasing wildfire globally. BBS-DOM eventually deposits on the water and soil environments, thus altering the environmental behaviors of pollutants (e.g., heavy metals) in the surface environments of the wildfire region. However, presently, the binding characters between heavy metals and BBS-DOM remains unknown. In this study, alfalfa, pinewood, and corn straw were burned at 300 °C and 600 °C to produce BBS-DOMs and their binding characters with Cu(II) were

INTRODUCTION: Climate change poses a growing threat to health in Canada through both extreme weather and climate events (e.g. wildfires, floods, extreme heat) and gradual environmental changes (e.g. shifting seasonal patterns, ecosystem degradation). While physical health impacts have been well documented, mental health consequences have only recently gained attention. This scoping review synthesizes research examining how climate-related weather events influence mental health outcomes across diverse populations and regions in Canada.

The White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) is one of the most frequent patients at the Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Centre (WRBC) of Green Balkans NGO in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, with around 300 individuals admitted annually. Of these, 77 birds (49%) were successfully rehabilitated and released into the wild (only two remained permanently disabled an…

Natural disasters (including heatwaves, wildfires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions) significantly impact respiratory health, posing heightened risks to vulnerable populations such as individuals with pre-existing conditions, children, and the elderly. This review explores the complex relationship between natural catastrophes and respiratory health, emphasising the roles of chemical pollutants, biocontaminants and meteorological factors. Epidemiological evidence highlights alarming trends, including increased asthma exacerbations, COPD hospitalisations and respiratory inf…
