Challenges and opportunities in embedding core components of substance use health care into Housing First programs.

BACKGROUND: The intersecting crises of homelessness and substance use health (SUH) harms require a critical re-evaluation of mental health, SUH, and social care integration. Housing First (HF) is an evidence-based approach to ending chronic homelessness, but challenges in effectively supporting individuals with significant SUH needs within the intervention have not been well-documented. A national pan-Canadian workshop convened multidisciplinary partners to identify barriers, opportunities, and core components for the successful integration of SUH care within HF programs. METHODS: The worksho

Diabetes and the role of primary care: a global perspective.

The global prevalence of diabetes is rising rapidly, with the steepest increases and greatest unmet need occurring in low-income and middle-income countries. Despite strong evidence that early detection and continuous management reduce morbidity and mortality, many health systems face persistent gaps in diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of people with diabetes. Primary care is the most accessible platform for screening and care coordination, and is central to addressing these challenges. Primary care-led models, including nurse-led and pharmacist-led interventions, integrated multidisciplina

Language barriers in mental healthcare: A critical analysis.

In multicultural healthcare settings, language barriers pose significant challenges, particularly in mental health where nuanced communication is vital. This manuscript examines the impact of limited English proficiency (LEP) on mental healthcare in New Zealand, where a substantial portion of the population and healthcare workforce are foreign-born. Despite official recommendations, professional interpreter use remains low, compromising care quality for LEP patients. The paper explores interpreters' roles beyond interpretation, including cultural mediation, while noting limitations in interpre

Scientists' Warning to Humanity: Unnecessary Bureaucracy Is a Global Impediment to Productivity, Advancement of Human and Planetary Wellbeing, Science and Sustainability.

Bureaucracies are essential to the proper functioning of almost all human activities. However, they are diverse in their quality and success-promoting potential. While many bureaucratic measures make sense and are necessary for the wellbeing and success of their organisations, some are unnecessary or ill-conceived/implemented, and yet others may harm system functioning and achievement. Unnecessary bureaucratic measures limit productivity, waste vital resources and drain workforces of engagement, enthusiasm, motivation, commitment and cohesion. (The term "unnecessary bureaucratic measures" used

Addressing the urban pipeline challenge for the physician workforce: the Sophie Davis model.

The convergence of numerous trends indicates that a physician shortage by 2020 is likely. There is a 25% growth in the overall population, but that of the college-age sector is increasing by only 5%. The numbers of African Americans and Latinos in that sector will increase more than will members of other population groups; these two groups are most affected by the uneven quality of science education in urban high schools. Challenges to create a pipeline of a large, diverse, and qualified pool of medical school applicants are great, and are influenced by the actual and perceived cost of medical

The minority student open: Utilizing the informal mentoring approach to enhance racial representation in HIV care and research.

INTRODUCTION: The imbalance between those impacted by HIV and the HIV healthcare workforce may be one of the drivers of racial health disparities in the epidemic. To address this, the Academy Council for Racial Equity (ACRE), a committee of the American Academy of HIV Medicine, developed a program of engagement and informal mentorship for underrepresented racial, ethnic and gender minority (UREGM) students and trainees of the health professions. This pilot program was designed to increase interest in HIV related careers among these trainees. METHODS: The program was developed as a career path

A Qualitative Inquiry into Nurse-Family Partnership Black Client Perspectives.

Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a home visiting program designed to improve pregnancy outcomes, child health and development, and life course outcomes for families facing socioeconomic inequalities through support and education provided by nurses to first-time mothers during pregnancy and up to 2 years postpartum. Studies show that home visiting programs like NFP have positive outcomes, but attrition remains a concern which may impact the desired health equity goals. Black mothers are more likely to withdraw from the NFP program, and research is lacking regarding their experiences in home vi

Preparing disabled students for professional practice: managing risk through a principles-based approach.

AIM: A discussion exploring the ways disabled students are managed in practice settings. It proposes and argues for morally and legally viable principles to guide risk assessment and inclusive decision-making in practice. BACKGROUND: Equality law means that universities are bound not to discriminate against students on the basis, amongst other things, of disability. As a consequence in the UK, there is a perceived increase in numbers of disabled people applying for and succeeding as health professionals. Whilst placement providers are equally obliged by the law to have inclusive policies, com

Promoting Disability Inclusion Through an Expanded Conceptual Framework of the Learning Environment.

The inclusion of people with disabilities in medicine is imperative to ensuring a diverse, culturally adept physician workforce. Despite increasing representation in U.S. medical schools, medical students with disabilities (MSWD) continue to face considerable challenges in pursuing medical education due to systemic discrimination, entrenched biases, and insufficient support and program accessibility. To systematically address the disparities and challenges faced by MSWD, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive framework to design, implement, and evaluate the breadth of initiatives employe

HIV/AIDS in the state of Amazonas, Brazilian Amazon: decentralization, third-party support and community action.

Amazonas is Brazil's largest state and a paradigmatic tropical medicine setting: vast territories connected mainly by rivers, high cultural and linguistic diversity, and multiple co-endemic infections. The state comprises 62 municipalities and roughly 4.3 million inhabitants, with approximately half of its inhabitants residing in Manaus, the capital, where specialized human immunodeficiency virus (HIV ) services have historically been concentrated. However, the HIV/ acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic has shown sustained interiorization beyond the capital and a high AIDS mortali

Cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole alter gut bacterial diversity in Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Across agricultural systems, crop production relies heavily on insect-mediated pollination. Both honey bees and bumble bees contribute substantially to crop productivity, with honey bee colonies providing large foraging workforces. On the other hand, bumble bees' specialized pollination behaviors offset the limitations of honey bees, making them especially well-suited for greenhouse production. However, pesticides may pose significant risks to bumble bee health. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to examine the effects of treatment with cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole on the gut
