The impact of developmental dyslexia and dysgraphia on movement production during word writing.

This study investigated how deficits in orthographic processing affect movement production during word writing. Children with dyslexia and dysgraphia wrote words and pseudo-words on a digitizer. The words were orthographically regular and irregular of varying frequency. The group analysis revealed that writing irregular words and pseudo-words increased movement duration and dysfluency. This indicates that the spelling processes were active while the children were writing the words. The impact of these spelling processes was stronger for the children with dyslexia and dysgraphia. The analysis o…

Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Assessment for Dyslexia in Adolescents and Young Adults.

The same working memory and reading and writing achievement phenotypes (behavioral markers of genetic variants) validated in prior research with younger children and older adults in a multi-generational family genetics study of dyslexia were used to study 81 adolescent and young adults (ages 16 to 25) from that study. Dyslexia is impaired word reading and spelling skills below the population mean and ability to use oral language to express thinking. These working memory predictor measures were given and used to predict reading and writing achievement: Coding (storing and processing) heard and …

Was Cheselden's One-Century-Long Otological Writings Concordant With His Time?

William Cheselden's famous anatomical treatise spanned the entire 18th century period with its 15 editions. The aim of this study is to anal … resence of three muscles to the malleus. Key otologic advancements, not found in any of Cheselden's writings, were catherization of the Eustachian tube, presence of fluid in the inner ear, and the surgical opening of the mastoid. This study demonstrates that Cheselden, and his subsequent editors, were unaware of some important otologic developments that re …

Characteristics of cognitive deficits and writing skills of Polish adults with developmental dyslexia.

The present study was aimed at analysing cognitive deficits of dyslexic adults, and examining their written language skills in comparison with their peers. Our results confirm the presence of a certain profile of symptoms in adult dyslexics. We noticed deficits in: phonological (verbal) short-term memory, phonological awareness, rapid automatised naming (speed, self-corrections), visual perception and control, and visual-motor coordination. Moreover, the dyslexic participants, as compared with their nondyslexic peers, produced more word structure errors whilst writing an essay. However, there …

Lexical and buffer effects in reading and in writing Noun-Noun compound nouns.

Reading and writing Noun-Noun compound nouns was investigated in two Italian aphasic patients: one with phonological dyslexia and the other with phonological dysgraphia. The patients were required to read, write and repeat a list of Noun-Noun compounds and length-matched non-compound nouns. The dyslexic patient RF read compounds better than non-compounds, and his repetition was flawless for both categories. The dysgraphic patient DA wrote non-compounds better than compounds because of a deficit in keeping separate entries at the lemma level. Differential performance when processing compounds a…

Therapeutic writing as an intervention for symptoms of bulimia nervosa: effects and mechanism of change.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the effects on bulimic symptomatology of a writing task intended to reduce emotional avoidance. METHOD: Eighty individuals reporting symptoms of bulimia completed, by e-mail, a therapeutic or control writing task. Participants completed questionnaires on bulimic symptoms, mood, and potential moderating and mediating factors, and were followed up after 4 and 8 weeks. Writing content was explored using a word count package and qualitative framework analysis. RESULTS: Bulimic symptoms decreased in both groups, although in both groups the number of participants who…

The joke envelope: a neglected precursor of the psychic envelope concept in Freud's writing.

The concepts of the primeval skin ego, psychic envelope, and related pre-ego containing and wrapping functions elaborated respectively by Esther Bick, Didier Anzieu, and Francis Tustin occupy an important position in contemporary psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice. The psychic envelope begins as a virtual mental protostructure ("proto" because it is not yet based on fully symbolized representations) that holds the budding mind together pending further developments. With maturity, the enveloping functions adopt symbolized, metaphoric form (for example, the aesthetic use of cloth, the a

Source interpretation: teaching students with and without LD to read and write historically.

We review domain-specific teaching approaches for students with learning disabilities in social studies, then present De La Paz's 2005 historical reasoning strategy so that readers understand the rationale for and have information on each stage of instruction. Next, we highlight the role of self-regulation for the reasoning process. We then turn to describing the role of each teacher (Morales as the social studies educator and Winston as the special educator), first as they collaborate with De La Paz and each other, then as Morales works alone, 1 year later. Implications are given for changes

[Transient improvement of writing tremor by holding breath in volition: a case report].

We report a 76-year-old Japanese woman who had tremor of her hand during writing. Her past and family histories were unremarkable. On neurological examination, there was no abnormal finding except the writing tremor and the postural tremor of her lips and jaw. Surface EMG studies revealed that regular grouped discharges, at a frequency of about 5 Hz, appeared in the wrist flexor and extensor muscles soon after she start writing; these grouped discharges were inhibited while holding breath. Her postural tremor improved after consumption of a small amount of alcohol, suggesting that she had esse…

Effects of reading and writing on cerebral laterality in good readers and children with dyslexia.

The present study evaluated the idea that the hemisphere-specific cognitive demands of reading and writing may induce task-specific maladaptive patterns of language lateralization in children with dyslexia. Situation-specific lateralization was examined in a repeated measures design under three dichotic listening conditions: baseline, concurrent reading, and concurrent writing. Twelve males with phonological dyslexia, 8 to 12 years old, were compared to 12 age-matched and 12 younger reading-matched good readers. Lateralization patterns were examined for condition-specific relationships to pseu…

[Reading and writing deficit in cases of localized infarction of the left anterior thalamus].

We have observed two cases with marked reading and writing deficits, in which speech and oral comprehension were generally intact. Detailed symptomatological study was performed on these cases, and the lesions were examined organically (X-ray computed tomography [X-ray CT], magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] and functionally (positron emission tomography [PET]. In addition to the marked reading and writing deficits, mild naming and memory disorders were found. X-ray CT and MRI revealed that the lesions were limited to the regions fed by the polar and paramedian arteries in the left thalamus. In …

Drug effects in a novel biphasic writing syndrome induced by acetylcholine in mice.

The writing induced in mice by i.p. administration of 3 mg/kg acetylcholine chloride showed a biphasic response with time. The primary phase of 1-15 sec after acetylcholine appeared to be the result of nicotinic receptor stimulation. The secondary phase from 30 sec following acetylcholine was selectively suppressed by anti-inflammatory agents and by atropine, while centrally acting analgesicw, other strong central nervous system drugs and ganglion blockers suppressed both phases of writhing to an equal extent. The narcotic partial agonists significantly suppressed primary writhing more readily…

Left Write Hook: proof of concept for a survivor-designed, and peer-led programme incorporating expressive writing and boxing to support mental health in adult survivors of child sexual abuse.

Background: Existing approaches to supporting victim-survivors (herein referred to as 'survivors') of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are resource-intensive and traditionally led by mental health professionals. Left Write Hook (LWH) is a novel survivor-designed, peer-led programme for survivors of CSA. By combining trauma-related expressive writing and non-contact, trauma-informed boxing, the programme promotes self-empowerment and supports survivors to rewrite their stories and reclaim their bodies. Objective: This study sought to demonstrate proof of concept for LWH as an intervention to enhance…
