Closing the Gaps: An Integrative Review of Yoga's Benefits for Lymphedema in Breast Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Dissection of the axillary lymph nodes during surgery for breast cancer with lymph node involvement is burdened by a complication: lymphedema. Approximately half of women undergoing axillary dissection suffer from it, with a notable impact in terms of perceived discomfort, presented quality of life, and alteration of body image. There is also no shortage of problems in the patient's social and professional life. METHODS: The present review aims to select Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) present in the literature regarding the effects of yoga as an alternative therapy in patient

Preliminary effects of a yoga intervention for lung cancer dyads: benefits for care partners.

PURPOSE: Lung cancer is a disease with high mortality and morbidity, impacting both the patient and their closest contact, referred to in this paper as their care partner. There is limited evidence on how to support mental health and quality of life (QOL) for patient-care partner dyads during cancer treatment. This pilot study examines yoga as an intervention to improve well-being for the dyad. METHODS: A single-group, 12-week pilot trial of yoga for patients and their care partners recruited from two hospitals during cancer treatment (N = 23 patient-partner dyads or 46 individuals). Most car

Dyadic Yoga for Head and Neck Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemoradiation and their Family Caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Concurrent chemoradiation to treat head and neck cancer (HNC) may result in debilitating toxicities. Targeted exercise such as yoga therapy may buffer against treatment-related sequelae; thus, this pilot RCT examined the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a yoga intervention. Because family caregivers report low caregiving efficacy and elevated levels of distress, we included them in this trial as active study participants. METHODS: HNC patients and their caregivers were randomized to a 15-session dyadic yoga program or a waitlist control (WLC) group. Prior to randomization,

Integrative Yoga and Ayurvedic Approach to Oligoasthenozoospermia: A Holistic Case Study on Fertility Enhancement.

Infertility is the failure to conceive after one or more years of regular, unprotected life for a fertile female. Around 45% of males are responsible for infertility worldwide. Research shows that nearly 50% of infertility in India is related to male reproductive factors or diseases. The male-carrying pathology in semen production includes low sperm count, volume, motility, abnormal forms, and sperm functional tests. This case presents a 31-year-old male with complaints of wanting issues after a complete year of regular, unprotected intercourse. He had undergone all the routine diagnostic inve

Yoga: A Natural Solution to Decrease Disease Burden in Children of MTHFR Deficient Parents.

INTRODUCTION: MTHFR being a key regulatory enzyme of 1-carbon metabolism pathway serves critical function of generation of SAM, replenishment of glutathione and nucleotide synthesis and finally methylation of the bio molecules. MTHFR gene mutation is a rare au-tosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism and presents with severe hyperhomocysteinemia. MTHFR polymorphisms on the other hand are commonly encountered of which two 677 C>T and 1298 A>C have been most widely studied and reported to increase the vulnerability to neural tube defects, congenital heart disease, various neuropsychiatric di

The Acute Impact of Hatha Yoga on Craving Among Smokers Attempting to Reduce or Quit.

INTRODUCTION: Despite negative effects of smoking, smokers have difficulty quitting, suggesting a need for additional strategies to help them quit. A single-session hatha yoga intervention acutely reduced craving among nicotine-deprived smokers not attempting to reduce or quit, yet it is unknown if it reduces craving among those attempting to change their smoking. Thus, this study tested the efficacy of a single-session hatha yoga intervention for acutely reducing craving among smokers attempting to reduce or quit smoking. METHODS: Data presented are part of a larger dissertation project. Par

Yoga for symptom management in oncology: A review of the evidence base and future directions for research.

Because yoga is increasingly recognized as a complementary approach to cancer symptom management, patients/survivors and providers need to understand its potential benefits and limitations both during and after treatment. The authors reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of yoga conducted at these points in the cancer continuum (N = 29; n = 13 during treatment, n = 12 post-treatment, and n = 4 with mixed samples). Findings both during and after treatment demonstrated the efficacy of yoga to improve overall quality of life (QOL), with improvement in subdomains of QOL varying across studi

Kundalini Yoga for Generalized Anxiety Disorder: An Exploration of Treatment Efficacy and Possible Mechanisms.

The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of Kundalini Yoga in reducing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) compared to a common treatment-as-usual condition using cognitive techniques. A secondary objective was to explore potential treatment mechanisms. Females aged 24 to 75 years with GAD ( n = 49) received either an 8-week Kundalini Yoga intervention ( n = 34) or an 8-week treatment-as-usual condition ( n = 15). The yoga condition resulted in lower levels of anxiety relative to the treatment-as-usual condition. Furthermore, changes in somatic symptoms mediated treatment o
