Survey of steroid usage patterns during and after low-risk penetrating keratoplasty.

PURPOSE: To evaluate corneal surgeons' corticosteroid use to prevent rejection of routine first-time penetrating keratoplasty (PKP). METHODS: Between March 2006 and June 2008, corneal surgeons taking an endothelial keratoplasty course at Price Vision Group, a tertiary referral center in Indianapolis, Indiana, were surveyed about steroid usage patterns. RESULTS: Of 271 attendees, 250 (92%) returned a survey. Regardless of lens status, 76% used intraoperative steroids. Dexamethasone was preferred by 72% of those who used injectable steroids. Everyone prescribed topical steroids, and 95% prescr

Fixation control and eye alignment in children treated for dense congenital or developmental cataracts.

BACKGROUND: Many children treated for cataracts develop strabismus and nystagmus; however, little is known about the critical period for adverse ocular motor outcomes with respect to age of onset and duration. METHODS: Children who had undergone extraction of dense cataracts by the age of 5 years were enrolled postoperatively. Ocular alignment was assessed regularly throughout follow-up. Fixation stability and associated ocular oscillations were determined from eye movement recordings at ≥5 years old. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate whether laterality (unilateral vs bila

Genetic mouse models of parkinsonism: strengths and limitations.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Patients with PD display a combination of motor symptoms including resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability that worsen over time. These motor symptoms are related to the progressive loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. PD patients also suffer from nonmotor symptoms that may precede the cardinal motor symptoms and that are likely related to pathology in other brain regions. Traditional toxin models of PD have focused on the nigrostriatal pathway and the loss of dopamine neur

Jagged 1 is necessary for normal mouse lens formation.

In mammals, two spatially and temporally distinct waves of fiber cell differentiation are crucial steps for normal lens development. In between these phases, an anterior growth zone forms in which progenitor cells migrate circumferentially, terminally exit the cell cycle and initiate differentiation at the lens equator. Much remains unknown about the molecular pathways orchestrating these processes. Previously, the Notch signal transduction pathway was shown to be critical for anterior lens progenitor cell growth and differentiation. However, the ligand or ligand(s) that direct these events ar
