Maternal fetal programming of birthweight among Australian Aboriginal infants: a population-based data linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Low birthweight, which is common among Australian Aboriginal infants, has been found to persist across generations because of sh … s associated with a mean decrease of 0·39 (95% CI -0·45 to -0·34) in offspring birthweight Z score, drug misuse with a decrease of 0·31 (-0·43 to -0·20), and diabetes with an increase of 0·58 (0·39 to 0·77). INTERPRETATION: We found little support for maternal fetal programming causing low offspring birthweight. The similar maternal and paternal influence on …

Psychological therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder and comorbid substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health disorder that may develop after exposure to traumatic events. Substance use disorder (SUD) is a behavioural disorder in which the use of one or more substances is associated with heightened levels of distress, clinically significant impairment of functioning, or both. PTSD and SUD frequently occur together. The comorbidity is widely recognised as being difficult to treat and is associated with poorer treatment completion and poorer outcomes than for either condition alone. Several psychological therapies have bee

Comparison of YouthCHAT, an Electronic Composite Psychosocial Screener, With a Clinician Interview Assessment for Young People: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial problems such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse are common and burdensome in young people. In New Zealand, screening for such problems is undertaken routinely only with year 9 students in low-decile schools and opportunistically in pediatric settings using a nonvalidated and time-consuming clinician-administered Home, Education, Eating, Activities, Drugs and Alcohol, Sexuality, Suicide and Depression, Safety (HEEADSSS) interview. The Youth version, Case-finding and Help Assessment Tool (YouthCHAT) is a relatively new, locally developed, electronic tablet-base

Organophosphates and their impact on the global environment.

Serious intoxications and incidences due to misuse of organophosphorus insecticides (OP) have been reported for over three decades. In this meeting I am talking about the following three topics. (1) Epidemiological studies on the use of OP in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. The National Research Institute of Police Science (NRIPS) in Japan has published the annual report of the epidemiological studies on the criminal and suicide events. The numbers of the incidence of pesticides are approximately 22%-30% of the total incidences, during 1991 and 1996. The incidence of pesticides has been gradually

Risk of homelessness after prison release and recidivism in Denmark: a nationwide, register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Transitional periods between and across services have been linked to homelessness. We aimed to investigate the association of previous history of homelessness and psychiatric disorders with risk of homelessness after release from prison. Additionally, we examined the association between homelessness after release and risk of recidivism. METHODS: We did a nationwide, register-based cohort study of people aged 15 years or older who were released from prison for the first time in Denmark between Jan 1, 2001, and Dec 31, 2021. We obtained data using the Danish Civil Registration Syste

Buprenorphine use and disparities in access among emergency department patients with opioid use disorder: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine, a partial mu-opioid agonist and kappa-opioid antagonist, is an approved treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Studies demonstrate that buprenorphine decreases cravings for other opioids, effectively ameliorates withdrawal symptoms, and decreases opioid overdose and mortality. However, buprenorphine remains under-utilized. Despite its low potential for misuse, research has reported wide use of non-prescribed buprenorphine, seemingly for its effectiveness in treating withdrawal and helping to maintain sobriety. We designed our study to describe patient experiences w

Associations Between General and Specific Psychopathology Factors and 10-Year Clinically Relevant Outcomes in Adult Swedish Twins and Siblings.

IMPORTANCE: General and specific factors of psychopathology are associated with future adverse outcomes, indicating that they might be useful for identifying individuals at greatest risk. However, it remains unknown if these associations are attributable to confounders that may influence both the psychopathology factors and later outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To analyze associations between psychopathology factors and clinically relevant outcomes within family pairs, adjusting for unmeasured confounds by applying co-twin control and sibling comparison designs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This

[Which psychiatric comorbidities in cannabis dependence during adolescence? Comparison of outpatients and controls].

BACKGROUND: The use of illicit substances, in particular cannabis, among French adolescents and young adults has become an important public health concern. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in pathological substance use is nowadays critical. Psychiatric comorbidities have been previously reported in adult substance abusers but are less documented in adolescents, especially regarding cannabis dependence. OBJECTIVES: We investigated mental health problems in adolescents and young adults, seeking treatment for their problematic cannabis use, comparatively to healthy controls, tak

Scheduled versus as-needed postpartum analgesia and oxycodone utilization.

BACKGROUND: An optimal approach for providing sufficient postpartum analgesia while minimizing the risk of opioid misuse or diversion has yet to be elucidated. Moreover, there is scant literature on the efficacy of around-the-clock (ATC) scheduled dosing of opioid analgesia compared to pro re nata (PRN; as-needed) dosing for postpartum pain management. Here we evaluate a quality improvement intervention that aimed to proactively provide pain relief with a multimodal analgesic regimen that includes oxycodone at scheduled time intervals. This new protocol stands in stark contrast to many contemp

[Determination of 38 antibiotic residues in honey by magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry].

Accurate antibiotic residue detection in honey is crucial for food safety and veterinary drug regulation in apiculture. Honey is a particularly challenging matrix. The high sugar content, strong viscosity, and pronounced matrix effects of the sample make it difficult to extract and detect target analytes effectively. Moreover, multiple antibiotics are used in beekeeping, while existing residue standards often provide incomplete coverage. These limitations highlight the urgent need for a robust and environmentally friendly multi-residue analytical method. In this study, a green and sensitive me

Integration, effectiveness and costs of different models of primary health care provision for people who are homeless: an evaluation study.

BACKGROUND: There is a high prevalence of health problems among single people who are homeless. Specialist primary health care services for this population have been developed in several locations across England; however, there have been very few evaluations of these services. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the work of different models of primary health care provision in England to determine their effectiveness in engaging people who are homeless in health care and in providing continuity of care for long-term conditions. It concerned single people (not families or couples with dependent ch

Multidrug resistance, biofilm formation, and virulence genes of Escherichia coli from backyard poultry farms.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Backyard chicken flocks have traditionally been regarded as an essential food source in developed countries; however, they may act as reservoirs and spread various zoonotic bacterial pathogens. This study was designed to investigate the prevalence, phenotypic resistance, biofilm formation (BF), and pathotypes of Escherichia coli isolates from backyard poultry farms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cloacal swabs (n=150) and internal organs (n=150) were collected from 30 backyard chicken flocks; 20 of them were experiencing systemic infection, and the other ten were apparently health

Erythrodermic Presentation of Atopic Dermatitis in a Patient with Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency Caused by Oral Glucocorticosteroid Abuse.

Dear Editor, A 41-year-old man presented to the Department of Dermatology for the first time due to an exacerbation of atopic dermatitis (AD) in the form of erythroderma. The patient had a history of atopic diseases, with being AD active from infancy. On clinical examination, generalized erythematous skin lesions causing acute pruritus and accompanied by severe skin exfoliation and dryness were present. On closer examination, the patient had a collection of signs and symptoms characterizing Cushing syndrome that included a round and full face (''moon face''), supraclavicular fat pads, and prox

Study on the prescribing patterns of antipsychotic medication in a rural England Community Mental Health Team.

INTRODUCTION: Providing comprehensive services for about 400 patients in the South Herefordshire area, the community mental health team manages cases of varying severity and complexity, ranging from Schizophrenia, to neuroses and disorders of adult personality. Antipsychotic medication remains a mainstay of treatment and management for patients under the team case load; hence a need exists for a detailed look into the prescription patterns of such medications. AIM: The aim of this study was to look into the prescribing patterns of antipsychotics for a sample of 50 patients in the South Herefo

Risk factors for preterm birth among gravid individuals receiving buprenorphine for opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) has dramatically increased over the last few decades, with 11.5 million American misusing opioids in 2016. Untreated OUD in pregnancy is associated with unique adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes including insufficient prenatal care, preterm birth (PTB), fetal growth restriction, fetal demise, and placental abruption . The mainstay treatment for OUD management in pregnancy is medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) including methadone or buprenorphine. The association of PTB and opioid use in pregnancy has been described for over 50 years, and effor

Types and aspects of support that young carers need and value, and barriers and enablers to access: the REBIAS-YC qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Many children and young people in England provide support to family members who are disabled, have mental or physical ill health, or misuse drugs or alcohol. Providing care can negatively impact children and young people's education, employment, health and social participation, with associated costs. Support is needed to prevent and reduce these negative impacts. The study sought to provide new knowledge and address prior research gaps regarding how best to support young carers from their perspective and that of the people they care for. OBJECTIVES: To address the following questi

Emerging and re-emerging Infectious diseases: a global health threat.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic can truly be described as an infectious disease that has recently emerged and judging from its rapid global spread, it leaves no doubt that it is one of the greatest health threats mankind has to contend with. This pandemic has alerted and stimulated the international scientific community to seriously reflect oa other recent episodes of emerging and re-emerging infections. The examples that have recently been observed and addressed include new emerging infectious diseases, unusual manifestations of previously known diseases and unusual eruption of known diseases in unusua
