Classification of gastric emptying and orocaecal transit through artificial neural networks.

Classical quantification of gastric emptying (GE) and orocaecal transit (OCT) based on half-life time T$ _{50} $, mean gastric emptying time (MGET), orocaecal transit time (OCTT) or mean caecum arrival time (MCAT) can lead to misconceptions when analyzing irregularly or noisy data. We show that this is the case for gastrointestinal transit of control and of diabetic rats. Addressing this limitation, we present an artificial neural network (ANN) as an alternative tool capable of discriminating between control and diabetic rats through GE and OCT analysis. Our data were obtained via biological e

Grading hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in neonatal EEG with convolutional neural networks and quadratic time-frequency distributions.

Objective. To develop an automated system to classify the severity of hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy injury (HIE) in neonates from the background electroencephalogram (EEG).Approach. By combining a quadratic time-frequency distribution (TFD) with a convolutional neural network, we develop a system that classifies 4 EEG grades of HIE. The network learns directly from the two-dimensional TFD through 3 independent layers with convolution in the time, frequency, and time-frequency directions. Computationally efficient algorithms make it feasible to transform each 5 min epoch to the time-frequency

Deep convolutional neural network and emotional learning based breast cancer detection using digital mammography.

Breast cancer is one of the deadly diseases among women. However, the chances of death are highly reduced if it gets diagnosed and treated at its early stage. Mammography is one of the reliable methods used by the radiologist to detect breast cancer at its initial stage. Therefore, an automatic and secure breast cancer detection system that accurately detects abnormalities not only increases the radiologist's diagnostic confidence but also provides more objective evidence. In this work, an automatic Diverse Features based Breast Cancer Detection (DFeBCD) system is proposed to classify a mammog

Automatic Breast Tumor Diagnosis in MRI Based on a Hybrid CNN and Feature-Based Method Using Improved Deer Hunting Optimization Algorithm.

Breast cancer is an unusual mass of the breast texture. It begins with an abnormal change in cell structure. This disease may increase uncontrollably and affects neighboring textures. Early diagnosis of this cancer (abnormal cell changes) can help definitively treat it. Also, prevention of this cancer can help to decrease the high cost of medical caring for breast cancer patients. In recent years, the computer-aided technique is an important active field for automatic cancer detection. In this study, an automatic breast tumor diagnosis system is introduced. An improved Deer Hunting Optimizatio

A Novel Hybrid Approach Based on Deep CNN Features to Detect Knee Osteoarthritis.

In the recent era, various diseases have severely affected the lifestyle of individuals, especially adults. Among these, bone diseases, including Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA), have a great impact on quality of life. KOA is a knee joint problem mainly produced due to decreased Articular Cartilage between femur and tibia bones, producing severe joint pain, effusion, joint movement constraints and gait anomalies. To address these issues, this study presents a novel KOA detection at early stages using deep learning-based feature extraction and classification. Firstly, the input X-ray images are prepr

Auxiliary Diagnostic Method for Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome Based on One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network.

Early accurate diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is important to prevent the further development of the disease. However, traditional diagnostic methods for PFPS mostly rely on the subjective experience of doctors and subjective feelings of the patient, which do not have an accurate-unified standard, and the clinical accuracy is not high. With the development of artificial intelligence technology, artificial neural networks are increasingly applied in medical treatment to assist doctors in diagnosis, but selecting a suitable neural network model must be considered. In this paper

Neural network analysis of nocturnal SpO2 signal enables easy screening of sleep apnea in patients with acute cerebrovascular disease.

Current diagnostics of sleep apnea relies on the time-consuming manual analysis of complex sleep registrations, which is impractical for routine screening in hospitalized patients with a high probability for sleep apnea, e.g. those experiencing acute stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIA). To overcome this shortcoming, we aimed to develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) capable of estimating the severity of sleep apnea in acute stroke and TIA patients based solely on the nocturnal oxygen saturation (SpO2) signal. The CNN was trained with SpO2 signals derived from 1379 home sleep apnea

Classification of digital pathological images of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma subtypes based on the fusion of transfer learning and principal component analysis.

PURPOSE: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a serious malignant disease. Delayed diagnosis will cause anemia, increased intracranial pressure, organ failure, and even lead to death. The current main trend in this area is to use deep learning (DL) for disease diagnosis. Extracting classification information from the digital pathology images by DL may realize the automated qualitative and quantitative analysis of NHL. Previously, DL has been used to classify NHL digital pathology images with some success. However, shortcomings still exist in the data preprocessing methods and feature extraction. Th

Estimation of pharmacokinetic parameters from DCE-MRI by extracting long and short time-dependent features using an LSTM network.

PURPOSE: T1 -weighted dynamic contrast-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) is typically quantified by least squares (LS) fitting to a pharmacokinetic (PK) model to yield parameters of microvasculature and perfusion in normal and disease tissues. Such fitting is both time-consuming as well as subject to inaccuracy and instability in parameter estimates. Here, we propose a novel neural network approach to estimate the PK parameters by extracting long and short time-dependent features in DCE-MRI. METHODS: A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, widely used for processing sequence data

Predicting the Feasibility of Copper(I)-Catalyzed Alkyne-Azide Cycloaddition Reactions Using a Recurrent Neural Network with a Self-Attention Mechanism.

The copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction, a major click chemistry reaction, is widely employed in drug discovery and chemical biology. However, the success rate of the CuAAC reaction is not satisfactory as expected, and in order to improve its performance, we developed a recurrent neural network (RNN) model to predict its feasibility. First, we designed and synthesized a structurally diverse library of 700 compounds with the CuAAC reaction to obtain experimental data. Then, using reaction SMILES as input, we generated a bidirectional long-short-term memory with a sel

A recognition method for extreme bradycardia by arterial blood pressure signal modeling with curve fitting.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of arterial blood pressure (ABP) signal for the detection of the subjects with life-threatening extreme bradycardia (EBr). APPROACH: The steps of the proposed method include ABP signal preprocessing, ABP wave segmentation, model parameter estimation, and EBr subject detection. First, the noise, interference and abnormal segments are eliminated in the pre-processing. Then, the ABP signal is segmented into a series of ABP waves by cardiac cycles. The pulse decomposition analysis (PDA) approach is presented to quantitively describe

Deep Convolutional Neural Network and Reverse Biorthogonal Wavelet Scalograms for Automatic Identification of High Frequency Micro-Scale Spike Transients in the Post-Hypoxic-Ischemic EEG.

Diagnosis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is currently limited and prognostic biological markers are required for early identification of at risk infants at birth. Using pre-clinical data from our fetal sheep models, we have shown that micro-scale EEG patterns, such as high-frequency spikes and sharp waves, evolve superimposed on a significantly suppressed background during the early hours of recovery (0-6 h), after an HI insult. In particular, we have demonstrated that the number of micro-scale gamma spike transients peaks within the first 2-2.5 hours of the insult and automatically

Detecting vulnerable plaque with vulnerability index based on convolutional neural networks.

Plaque rupture and subsequent thrombosis are major processes of acute cardiovascular events. The Vulnerability Index is a very important indicator of whether a plaque is ruptured, and these easily ruptured or fragile plaques can be detected early. The higher the general vulnerability index, the higher the instability of the plaque. Therefore, determining a clear vulnerability index classification point can effectively reduce unnecessary interventional therapy. However, the current critical value of the vulnerability index has not been well defined. In this study, we proposed a neural network-b

Low-light image enhancement of high-speed endoscopic videos using a convolutional neural network.

Laryngeal endoscopy is one of the primary diagnostic tools for laryngeal disorders. The main techniques are videostroboscopy and lately high-speed video endoscopy. Unfortunately, due to the restricting anatomy of the larynx and technical limitations of the recording equipment, many videos suffer from insufficient illumination, which complicates clinical examination and analysis. This work presents an approach to enhance low-light images from high-speed video endoscopy using a convolutional neural network. We introduce a new technique to generate realistically darkened training samples using Pe

Single spectral imagery and faster R-CNN to identify hazardous and noxious substances spills.

The automatic identification (location, segmentation, and classification) by UAV- based optical imaging of spills of transparent floating Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) benefits the on-site response to spill incidents, but it is also challenging. With a focus on the on-site optical imaging of HNS, this study explores the potential of single spectral imaging for HNS identification using the Faster R-CNN architecture. Images at 365 nm (narrow UV band), blue channel images (visible broadband of ∼400-600 nm), and RGB images of typical HNS (benzene, xylene, and palm oil) in different scenar

All-metal oxide synaptic transistor with modulatable plasticity.

The artificial neural system has attracted tremendous attention in the field of artificial intelligence due to operate mode of parallel computation which is superior to traditional Von Neumann computers in processing complex sensory data and real-time situations with extremely low power dissipation. Remarkable progress has been made in the hardware-based electric-double-layer synaptic transistors as its modulation by ion movement is similar to biological synapse for the past few years. Unfortunately, long-term potentiation (LTP) timescale is still a big challenge in hardware-based electric-dou
