Behavior in CHARGE syndrome: introduction to the special topic.

Challenging behavior in children with CHARGE syndrome has been increasingly a concern of parents, educators, and health professionals. This article introduces the special topic in the American Journal of Medical Genetics on behavior in individuals with CHARGE syndrome. It provides background on CHARGE syndrome, diagnostic criteria, and the relationship of sensory and other physical deficits with both development and behavior. Four themes related to our developing understanding of behavior in CHARGE are described: children with CHARGE have behaviors different from those seen in other syndromes

Correlates of disruptive behaviors in nursing homes. A reanalysis.

This study reexamines factors associated with the occurrence of disruptive behaviors using a representative sample of nursing home residents in Rhode Island in 1984-1985. Four indicators of disruptive behaviors are examined using multivariate methods: evidence of any disruptive behaviors, abusive behavior, wandering, and noisiness. Results are compared with the 1989 study by Jackson et al., which was based on the same data. Findings indicate that the likelihood of exhibiting disruptive behaviors in nursing homes increases with the severity of cognitive impairment, ADL dysfunction, and incontin

Human behavioral pharmacology of stimulant drugs: An update and narrative review.

Stimulant use disorders present an enduring public health concern. Chronic stimulant use is associated with a range of health problems, with notable increases in stimulant overdose that disproportionately affect marginalized populations. With these persistent problems, it is important to understand the behavioral and pharmacological factors that contribute to stimulant use in humans. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an update and narrative review on recent human laboratory research that has evaluated the behavioral pharmacology of stimulant drugs. We focus on two prototypic stimulants

Six-year outcome for children with ODD or CD treated with the coping power program.

Children with severe aggressive behavioral problems are one of the groups most frequently referred to mental health clinics, and they engage in behaviors that put them at risk for substance use problems and a host of other negative outcomes. The present study aimed to assess the long-term outcome (six-year follow up) of the Coping Power Program delivered in a mental health hospital for children with behavioral disorders. We recruited one hundred and twenty children (mean age = 9.9, SD = 0.85), twenty-three patients were lost during the follow-ups. The sample of the current study included sixty

Expressing negative emotions to children: Mothers' aversion sensitivity and children's adjustment.

Research is unclear about when expressing negative emotions to children performs valuable socialization and regulatory functions and when, instead, it undermines children's adjustment. In this study, we isolated 1 kind of negative expression to test the aversion sensitivity hypothesis: that rapid increases in mothers' negativity as a function of increases in the aversiveness of children's behavior are uniquely problematic for children. During multiple assessments of a divorcing sample over 2 years (N = 284), 12-min interactions between mothers and their 4- to 11-year-old children were recorded

Beyond phonological processing deficits in adult dyslexics: atypical FMRI activation patterns for spatial problem solving.

It is unclear the extent to which neurodevelopmental differences observed in reading disabled individuals are limited to traditional language processing areas. Some have suggested atypical processing of complex spatial problems in these individuals. Hitherto, research on this question has been limited to behavioral studies, yielding mixed results. Absence of related imaging studies is in stark contrast to the plethora examining functional neurology for verbal tasks. This study uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine how adult dyslexics perform when analyzing complex spatia

Adolescents and sexually transmitted diseases.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a serious health problem for adolescents, occurring in an estimated one-quarter of sexually active teen-agers. Many of the health problems--including STDs--result from specific risk-taking behaviors. Determinants of STD risks among adolescents include behavioral, psychological, social, biological, institutional factors. Education is an important component in STD control in adolescents. The goal of education is to increase adolescent self-efficiency in practicing STD prevention and risk-reduction. A comprehensive approach including quality, theory-based

A Longitudinal Empirical Investigation of the Pathways Model of Problem Gambling.

The pathways model of problem gambling suggests the existence of three developmental pathways to problem gambling, each differentiated by a set of predisposing biopsychosocial characteristics: behaviorally conditioned (BC), emotionally vulnerable (EV), and biologically vulnerable (BV) gamblers. This study examined the empirical validity of the Pathways Model among adolescents followed up to early adulthood. A prospective-longitudinal design was used, thus overcoming limitations of past studies that used concurrent or retrospective designs. Two samples were used: (1) a population sample of Fren

Which family factors predict children's externalizing behaviors following discharge from psychiatric inpatient treatment?

OBJECTIVE: Parents' behavior management practices, parental stress, and family environment are highly pertinent to children's conduct problems. Preadolescents' psychiatric hospitalization usually arises because of severe conduct problems, so the relationships of family-related variables to postdischarge functioning warrant investigation. This study examined postdischarge clinical course and select family factors to model outcomes via a) predictors measured at admission, b) predictors measured concurrently with outcome, and c) changes in predictor values from admission through follow-up. METHO

A Nationally-Representative Epidemiological and Risk Factor Assessment of Child Mental Health in Vietnam.

As part of the global mental health movement's focus on identifying and reducing international disparities, this study conducted the first nationally representative child mental health epidemiological survey in Vietnam. We assessed as risk/protective factors several family social structure characteristics (e.g., presence of grandparents, number of siblings in the home) of particular relevance to non-Western countries. Epidemiological data using the Child Behavior Checklist and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire were collected at 60 sites in 10 of Vietnam's 63 provinces selected to pr

The high-risk infant environment. Part 2. The role of caregiving and the social environment.

Neonatal intensive care units are essential for the successful care of very immature and sick infants. The technology of NICUs has contributed significantly to the reduction of neonatal mortality and improvement of neonatal outcome. While the outcome for high-risk neonates has vastly improved over the past three decades, a number of infants sustain injuries and complications that result in long-term disabilities. It is now clear that some of the long-term problems of high-risk infants are a result of the environment and care practices and are not attributable to the original disease or conditi

The phenomenology and clinical correlates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in youth with autism spectrum disorders.

This study investigated the phenomenology and clinical correlates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in youth with ASD (N = 102; range 7-16 years). The presence of suicidal thoughts and behavior was assessed through the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule-Child and Parent Versions. Children and parents completed measures of anxiety severity, functional impairment, and behavioral and emotional problems. Approximately 11 % of youth displayed suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Children with autism were more likely to have suicidal thoughts and behaviors whereas children with Asperger's disorder we

Optimizing Loop Diuretic Treatment for Mortality Reduction in Patients With Acute Dyspnea Using a Practical Offline Reinforcement Learning Pipeline for Health Care: Retrospective Single-Center Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Offline reinforcement learning (RL) has been increasingly applied to clinical decision-making problems. However, due to the lack of a standardized pipeline, prior work often relied on strategies that may lead to overfitted policies and inaccurate evaluations. OBJECTIVE: In this work, we present a practical pipeline-Pipeline for Learning Robust Policies in Reinforcement Learning (PROP-RL)-designed to improve robustness and minimize disruption to clinical workflow. We demonstrate its efficacy in the context of learning treatment policies for administering loop diuretics in hospitali

Train-Track-Bridge Dynamic Interaction on a Bowstring-Arch Railway Bridge: Advanced Modeling and Experimental Validation.

This article describes the validation of a 3D dynamic interaction model of the train-track-bridge system on a bowstring-arch railway bridge based on experimental tests. The train, track, and bridge subsystems were modeled on the basis of large-scale and highly complex finite elements models previously calibrated on the basis of experimental modal parameters. The train-bridge dynamic interaction problem, in the vertical direction, was efficiently solved using a dedicated computational application (TBI software). This software resorts to an uncoupled methodology that considers the two subsystems

[Different explanatory models for addictive behavior in Turkish and German youths in Germany: significance for prevention and treatment].

Due to cultural and social barriers, immigrants seldom frequent centers for information, counseling, and treatment of addictive disorders. We examine cultural differences in the explanatory models of addictive behavior among Turkish and German youths in Germany with statistical devices that map the concepts associated with problems of addiction. Relevant differences were found between the disorder concepts of Turkish and German youth. German but not Turkish youths classified eating disorders among severe addictive disorders and associated them with embarrassment and shame. Concerning substance

A family study of unsocialized aggressive boys.

The psychiatric histories of relatives of 17 boys admitted to an inpatient unit with "unsocialized aggressive" behavior and of 19 boys admitted with other problems were investigated by means of structured interviews. The interviews were rated blind and diagnoses made on the respondents and relatives described in the family histories using research criteria. Fathers and combined parents of the probands qualified for the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder more often than the fathers and combined parents of control boys. Uncles of probands and combined uncles and aunts more often had a

Childhood sleep behaviors and polycystic ovary syndrome risk in adolescence: the Raine study cohort longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but no prospective studies have explored whether childhood-adolescence sleep disturbances are associated with later PCOS risk. Understanding behavioral markers may support early identification and intervention. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether poor sleep behaviors from childhood to adolescence are prospectively associated with a diagnosis of PCOS at age 14 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sleep behavior data (Child Behavior Checklist) from a longitudinal study of 226 female participants of the Raine Study coh

An Empirical Investigation of the Three-Pathway Model and its Contribution to the Gambling Disorder Psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Blaszczynski and Nower (2002) proposed a theoretical model that leads to problem gambling via three pathways: (1) operant conditioning; (2) emotional vulnerability; and (3) impulsivity and psychopathy. In the current investigation, we explored the relationship between these three putative causative dimensions and clinical core features of Gambling Disorder (GD): gambling craving, gambling-related cognitive distortions, gambling (wagering) behavior, and gambling severity. RESULTS: Data on 343 people with disordered gambling were analyzed. Measures representing the three pathways we
