Comparison in Joint-Position Sense and Muscle Coactivation Between Anterior Cruciate Ligament-Deficient and Healthy Individuals.

CONTEXT: Tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) may disrupt the ability to recognize the knee position in space during limb-repositioning tasks, which is referred to as joint-position sense (JPS). Impairments in JPS have been shown to be lower during active than passive repositioning tasks, thus suggesting that coactivation patterns of the muscles surrounding the knee might compensate for the disrupted JPS and ensure accurate limb repositioning in ACL-deficient individuals. OBJECTIVE: To investigate muscle coactivation patterns during JPS repositioning tasks in ACL-deficient and heal

How does brain activation differ in children with unilateral cerebral palsy compared to typically developing children, during active and passive movements, and tactile stimulation? An fMRI study.

The aim of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was to investigate brain activation associated with active and passive movements, and tactile stimulation in 17 children with right-sided unilateral cerebral palsy (CP), compared to 19 typically developing children (TD). The active movements consisted of repetitive opening and closing of the hand. For passive movements, an MRI-compatible robot moved the finger up and down. Tactile stimulation was provided by manually stroking the dorsal surface of the hand with a sponge cotton cloth. In both groups, contralateral primary sensori

Is balance normal in migraineurs without history of vertigo?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate by static posturography the occurrence of balance disorder in migraineurs without a history of vertigo during the interictal period. BACKGROUND: The link between migraine and balance disorders has long been known but postural balance in migraineurs without manifest vestibulopathy has been rarely studied. METHODS: We studied 25 migraineurs and age- and gender-matched controls. With static posturography we measured: (1) postural sway with eyes open or closed on a platform or on foam with 4 different head positions; (2) limits of stability as patients change their cent

Reverse engineering the lordosis behavior circuit.

Reverse engineering takes the facts we know about a device or a process and reasons backwards to infer the principles underlying the structure-function relations. The goal of this review is to apply this approach to a well-studied hormone-controlled behavior, namely the reproductive stance of female rodents, lordosis. We first provide a brief overview on the considerable amount of progress in the analysis of female reproductive behavior. Then, we propose an analysis of the mechanisms of this behavior from a reverse-engineering perspective with the goal of generating novel hypotheses about the

Influence of vibration to the neck, trunk and lower extremity muscles on equilibrium in normal subjects and patients with unilateral labyrinthine dysfunction.

To investigate the role of proprioceptors of different skeletal muscles in postural control, in normal subjects and patients with unilateral labyrinthine dysfunction (ULD), the effect of vibration on these muscles was studied by postulography. The subjects comprised 59 normal subjects and 12 patients with ULD due to resection of acoustic tumours. Sagittal body sway was observed during vibration to the triceps surae, tibialis anterior and upper dorsal neck muscles. No significant change in sway was observed in the frontal plane in normal subjects. Significant differences between normal subjects

The visual vertigo syndrome.

Neuro-otological and posturography findings in 15 patients with visually induced vertiginous symptoms (visual vertigo, VV) are reported. Most patients were considered to have peripheral vestibular disorders but one had cerebellar degeneration and another a brainstem stroke. Five patients showed abnormally large body sway induced by full-field visual motion stimulation; including the 2 patients with CNS disease. Four of these 5 patients had additional strabismic symptoms (diplopia, squint surgery and ocular muscle weakness). VV may occur if patients with balance disorders show high visual field

Dual-point sensory anchoring: emergent attentional coherence through embodied coupling.

Attentional instability is a persistent cognitive challenge in adult life, yet most existing interventions work through top-down regulatory pathways that require sustained effort, specialized instruction, or clinical access. This paper introduces Dual-Point Sensory Anchoring (DPSA), a sensorimotor paradigm proposing a different route: attentional stability engineered from the bottom up, through the continuous confirmation of low-level tactile-proprioceptive predictions instead of through metacognitive monitoring. The paradigm is organized around four interacting constraints: simultaneous bilat

Characterizing complex upper limb movements with and without visual feedback in typically developing children.

The development of upper limb movements has been primarily described through reaching movements, which may not have the complex motor planning and execution demands of many daily tasks. In this study, we introduced a complex task in which individuals had to navigate their hand from a start target through two openings in a simple maze to reach an end target. In half the trials, participants received visual feedback of their hand position, and in half of the trials, they did not. A total of 31 participants aged 8-17 yr completed the study. We found that with visual feedback, reaction time, numbe

A systematic investigation reveals dissociable effects of ageing on implicit and explicit components of sensorimotor learning.

Deterioration in motor control is a hallmark of ageing, significantly contributing to a decline in quality of life. More controversial is the question of whether and how ageing impacts sensorimotor learning. We hypothesized that the inconsistent picture observed in current literature can be attributed to at least two factors. First, ageing studies tend to be underpowered. Second, the learning assays used in these experiments tend to reflect, to varying degrees, the operation of multiple learning processes, making it difficult to make inferences across studies. Here we took a two-pronged approa

Structured Multi-Modal Rehabilitation Program for FHL Tendinitis and Os Trigonum Excision: A Case Report.

Flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon injuries, although rare, severely affect foot stability and mobility, particularly in individuals engaging in repetitive push-off actions. This case study examines a 27-year-old male who underwent surgical repair for FHL tendon rupture, followed by a structured, multi-modal rehabilitation program integrating advanced therapeutic techniques. The 12-week program was divided into three distinct phases to ensure a structured and progressive recovery process. The Early Phase (Weeks 1-4) focused on pain and edema control through interventions such as massage, elec

Assessment of dynamic stability and identification of key tasks, inertial sensors, and parameters in patients with bilateral and unilateral vestibulopathy: investigation in a semi-standardized environment.

Monitoring the functional status of patients with bilateral vestibulopathy (BV) or unilateral vestibulopathy (UV) in an ecological environment remains a challenge, as current tests are performed in specialized laboratories and do not reflect patients’ limitations and symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the overall movement patterns of patients using inertial measurement units (IMU) in a semi-standardized environment that replicated daily life situations. Nineteen BV patients, 20 UV patients, and 20 healthy subjects were recruited to perform 15 daily-living tasks. The intensity, smoothness,

Anatomy changes, signalling pathways, and clinical treatment after ankle sprain.

AIMS: Ankle sprain (AS), a prevalent sports injury, often progresses to chronic ankle instability (CAI) and post-traumatic arthritis if inadequately treated. Despite known clinical manifestations, the molecular mechanisms driving poor rehabilitation outcomes remain unclear. This review aims to explore the pathological changes in anatomical structure and signalling pathways in AS, as well as the therapeutic strategies associated with these mechanisms. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in four databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and OVID MEDICINE, covering the peri

fMRI reveals brainstem and cortical networks contribute to the instruction-dependent modulation of stretch-evoked motor responses.

Reliable noninvasive measurement of human brainstem activity during motor control remains challenging due to small anatomical structures and physiological noise, yet it is essential for understanding descending contributions to rapid feedback control. We used brainstem-optimized whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether task-dependent modulation of stretch-evoked motor responses in humans is associated with changes in activation within reticulospinal regions of the human brainstem. A behavioral validation experiment (N = 10), in which participants were instruc

Visual motion does not bias gravity-referenced vestibular coding in the primate cerebellar nodulus and uvula.

Visual motion is known to influence perceptions of tilt, verticality, and translation, suggesting that optic flow is combined with vestibular cues to estimate orientation relative to gravity. The cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula (NU) are a prime candidate to perform this computation because this region uniquely receives convergent semicircular canal, otolith, and proprioceptive inputs, and in non-primate species full-field visual motion robustly modulates NU activity. Here, we tested whether visual roll motion, known to bias perceived orientation relative to gravity, alters the internal gr
