A minimum 2-year follow-up retrospective review was undertaken to assess our experience with an anterior paramedian muscle-sparing approach to the lumbar spine for anterior spinal fusion (ASF). The records of 28 patients (November 1991 through January 1996) undergoing ASF via a left lower quadrant transverse skin incision (6-10 cm) with a paramedian anterior rectus fascial Z-plasty retroperitoneal approach were reviewed. Diagnosis, number, and level of lumbar interspaces fused, types of fusion, estimated blood loss, length of procedure, length of hospital stay, and complications were analyzed.

Data from 121 patient questionnaires suggest that treatment for nonseminomatous testicular cancer not only causes sterility but also disrupts marital and sexual happiness in 10 to 20 per cent of patients. Treatment included unilateral orchiectomy and retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy alone in 47 men; 30 had additional chemotherapy, 8 had additional radiotherapy, and 26 were treated with all three modalities. Between 1973 and 1981, seventy patients with a spinal cord injury secondary to a thoracolumbar fracture were treated by anterior spinal-canal decompression through a retroperitoneal approach. OBJECTIVES: We present the video of a laparoscopic correction of a left ureteropelvic junction obstruction in a patient who has already undergone previous surgical open pyeloplasty and subsequent acucise for failure of the first surgery. At 8 years after the second surgery, the patient showed a recurrence of the obstruction of the left ureteropelvic junction. It was decided to perform the retroperitoneal laparoscopic correction of the obstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: With the patient placed in a 90° flank position, 4 trocars are placed in the retroperitoneum space by the Hasson tecnique.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate clinical and radiographic results in the patients who underwent L5-S1 fixation using the technique of percutaneous lumbar interbody fusion (AxiaLIF).
MATERIAL: The study comprised 23 patients, 11 women and 12 men, who ranged from age of 21 to 63 years, with an average of 48.2 years. In all patients surgical posterior stabilisation involving the L5-S1 segment had previously been done. The initial indications for surgery were L5-S1 spondylolisthesis in 20 and L5-S1 spondylosis and stenosis in three patients.

PURPOSE: The histologic finding of teratoma occurs in approximately 40% of all postchemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissections (PC-RPLND). We evaluated patients at our institution undergoing initial PC-RPLND for teratoma to determine their clinical outcome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified 210 patients from 1989 to 2003 with nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT) who underwent initial PC-RPLND and were found to have only teratoma in the retroperitoneum. Clinical and pathologic information was obtained from our prospective surgical database, and clinical outcome was reported.

OBJECTIVE: 360 degrees in-situ fusion for high-grade spondylolisthesis showed satisfying clinical long-term results. Combining anterior with posterior surgery increases fusion rates. Anteriorly inserted transvertebral HMA screws could be an alternative to strut graft constructs or cages, avoiding donor site complications.
