Traumatic brain injury (TBI) frequently results in cardiac dysfunction and impacts the quality of survivors' life. It has been reported that carbon monoxide-releasing molecule-3 (CORM-3) administration immediately after hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HSR) ameliorated the HSR‑induced cardiac dysfunctions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the application of CORM-3 on TBI exerted therapeutic effects against TBI-induced cardiac dysfunctions. Rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 12) including Sham, TBI, TBI/CORM-3 and TBI/inactive CORM-3 (iCORM-3) groups. TBI was

INTRODUCTION: The 2016 National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine report included a proposal to establish a National Trauma Research Action Plan. In response, the Department of Defense funded the Coalition for National Trauma Research to generate a comprehensive research agenda spanning the continuum of trauma and burn care from prehospital care to rehabilitation as part of an overall strategy to achieve zero preventable deaths and disability after injury. The Postadmission Critical Care Research panel was 1 of 11 panels constituted to develop this research agenda.

INTRODUCTION: Damage control strategies in resuscitation and (fracture) surgery have become standard of care in the treatment of severely injured patients. It is suggested that damage control improves survival and decreases the incidence of organ failure. However, these strategies can possibly increase the risk of complications such as infections. Indication for damage control procedures is guided by physiological parameters, type of injury, and the surgeon's experience. We analyzed outcomes of severely injured patients who underwent emergency surgery.
METHODS: Severely injured patients, admi

BACKGROUND: Trauma is one of the common reasons for emergency department (ED) presentations. Specifically, severe-trauma patients often present with mortal complications, including traumatic shock or respiratory or multiorgan failure/dysfunction, and these situations cause high-mortality risk. Scoring systems in the triage of trauma patients can help determine the injury's severity and the patient's prognosis.
AIM: In this study, we aimed to compare Early-Warning Score (EWS), Revised Trauma Score (RTS), and CRAMS to predict the severity and prognosis of damage among high-energy-trauma patient

BACKGROUND: Bite wounds are one of the most common traumatic injuries in dogs and depending on their severity, location, etc., urgent care including antibiotic therapy may be necessary. Serious complications can result from these injuries, such as multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), as well as a generalized reduction in cerebral perfusion, e.g. during cardiac arrest, shock, or severe hypotension that may cause global brain ischemia (GBI).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old spayed female Maltese dog was presented with generalized seizures, ataxia, and obtunded mentation. The dog was injur

Throughout the world, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the major causes of disability, which can include deficits in motor function and memory, as well as acquired epilepsy. Although some studies have shown the beneficial effects of physical exercise after TBI, the prophylactic effects are poorly understood. In the current study, we demonstrated that TBI induced by fluid percussion injury (FPI) in adult male Wistar rats caused early motor impairment (24 h), learning deficit (15 days), spontaneous epileptiform events (SEE), and hilar cell loss in the hippocampus (35 days) after TBI. The h

OBJECTIVE: The beneficial effect of hypertonic saline solutions in the emergency treatment of shock and traumatic brain injury is well described. The present study determines effects of a single bolus of hypertonic saline on long-term survival, neurologic function, and neuronal survival 10 days after global cerebral ischemia. In addition, we evaluated the therapeutic window for hypertonic saline treatment (early vs. delayed application).
DESIGN: Laboratory experiment.
SETTING: University laboratory.
SUBJECTS: Male Wistar rats weighing 240-330 g.

IMPORTANCE: The initial treatment by emergency medical services (EMS) significantly affects the outcomes for severely injured patients. Effective control of hemorrhage, proper administration of blood products, and adherence to traumatic brain injury guidelines can reduce morbidity and mortality after trauma. Additionally, the experience of prehospital clinicians in high-acuity nontrauma conditions is associated with improved outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of annual trauma patient volume and outcomes at the individual EMS clinician level.

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVNFH), also known as osteonecrosis of the femoral head, is a progressive musculoskeletal disorder caused by compromised blood supply to the femoral head, causing osteocyte death, structural collapse, pain, and functional disability. Despite advances in diagnostic imaging and treatment modalities, optimal management remains challenging because of multifactorial etiology and variable clinical presentation of the disease. To systematically evaluate the etiopathogenesis, evidence-based management strategies, and functional outcomes associated with AVNFH. A

INTRODUCTION: Progression of hemorrhagic injury (PHI) in children with traumatic brain injury portends poor outcomes. The association between thromboelastography (TEG), functional coagulation assays, and PHI is not well characterized in children.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of children presenting with PHI at a pediatric level I academic trauma center from 2015 to 2020. Inclusion criteria were as follows: age less than 18 years, intracranial hemorrhage on admission head computed tomography scan, and admission rapid TEG assay and conventional coagulation tests. BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage remains a leading cause of death among trauma patients. Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta has grown in popularity as an efficient, less invasive alternative to managing patients with noncompressible hemorrhage. The aim of this study to investigate the clinical outcomes of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta use in adult civilian trauma patients with and without concomitant traumatic brain injury.
METHODS: This a secondary analysis of the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program database from the years

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, many oral historians throughout the nation began to consider the role their methodology could serve in documenting the storm and its aftermath. Interviewing so soon after such a traumatic event creates new considerations for oral history as an approach to recording experience. The problems and possibilities of oral history as such a moment initiated a vibrant discussion on H-Oralhist and at professional meetings in the fall of 2005. This article reflects on many of the topics raised in that dialogue, including issues of historical

BACKGROUND: The aims of this prospective observational study were to describe early hemodynamic patterns of blunt and penetrating truncal injury and to evaluate outcomes prediction using noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring with a mathematical model tested against actual in-hospital outcomes. The hypothesis was that traumatic shock is a circulatory disorder that can be monitored by noninvasive hemodynamic parameters that reflect cardiac, pulmonary, and tissue perfusion functions.
STUDY DESIGN: The cardiac index (CI), heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse oximetry (SapO(2)), trans

Since 1950, 300 patients sustaining pancreatic injuries have been managed. Three-fourths of the injuries were due to penetrating trauma with a 20% mortality and one-fourth due to blunt trauma resulting in an 18% mortality. The pancreatic injury was responsible for death in only 3% of patients. Early onset of shock resulted in 38% mortality whereas only 4% of normotensive patients died. No patient died of an isolated pancreatic injury. Sepsis was the second most common cause of death following hemorrhage. Preoperative serum amylase was elevated more frequently following blunt trauma than penetr

The symptoms of the tourniquet syndrome (hypotonia, tachycardia, postischemic edema, hypercaliemia, metabolic acidosis, myoglobinuria, renal insufficiency) could be observed after embolectomy of saddle embolism in 37 patients. 19 patients died postoperatively; heart insufficiency was demonstrated by autopsy in 14 patients. The pathophysiology of heart failure in tourniquet syndrome was studied in dog experiments after unilateral and bilateral hind limb ischemia. The development of shock turned out to be more severe after bilateral ischemia--comparable to saddle embolism--than after unilateral

OBJECTIVE: Increasing evidence has shown the involvement of the innate immune system and inflammatory response in osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis; however, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are recognized risk factors for development of post-traumatic OA. We investigated (1) whether inflammatory mediators involved in OA pathogenesis are also present at significant concentrations in the knee joint sometime after ACL complete tear and may be considered as prognostic biomarkers of progression to secondary OA; and (2) whether quantification in serum may surrogate synovial fluid (SF) measurem
