Return to play after all-inside meniscal repair in competitive football players: a minimum 5-year follow-up.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report the mid-to-long-term return to sports after all-inside meniscal repair in competitive football players. METHODS: All football players undergoing all-inside meniscal repair with a minimum Tegner activity score of 9 and minimum follow-up of 5 years were eligible for inclusion. Patients were excluded if: (a) they had ipsilateral or contralateral: meniscectomy, posterior cruciate ligament tear, multi-ligament knee injuries, osteotomies, or meniscal transplant (b) they had meniscal tears in the anterior horn, and (c) they had bucket-handle tears. Athletic participation after acute ischemic childhood stroke: a survey of pediatric stroke experts.

Minimal evidence exists about the risk of recurrent childhood acute ischemic stroke in patients subjected to a subsequent head or neck injury. Recurrent or multiple dissections have been demonstrated in select cases. Minor head trauma has also been associated with acute ischemic stroke. The objective of this study was to survey pediatric stroke experts about participation of patients following acute ischemic stroke in high impact, medium impact, and low impact exercise. International Pediatric Stroke Study members were surveyed about athletic participation after stroke. Participants were asked

[Ectotoxin-forming pyogenic Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as a cause of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in man].

Basing considerations on an extremely carefully examined case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), an analysis of this phenomenon is presented from the clinical and forensic points of view. TSS is often associated with the term "tampon disease" but in the meantime it has turned out that it may also arise as a non-menstrual disorder, caused by local infections, for example after surgical interventions. The inevitable symptoms include: fever, exanthema, desquamation on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet as well as hypotension. The clinical symptoms would initially suggest a septic process, h

Arthroscopy in acute injuries of anterior cruciate-deficient knees: fresh and old intraarticular lesions.

Sixty-four patients out of a much larger population who presented within 2 weeks of an acute injury to the knee were found at arthroscopy to have either a chronic tear or chronic incompetent anterior cruciate ligament (group I, 32 patients) or to have an acutely torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) (group II, 32 patients). Arthroscopy of both groups allowed the author to compare and contrast the lesions found in each group. Chondromalacia of the femorotibial joint is significantly more frequent in chronic ACL-deficient knees (p less than 0.05), and there is a tendency to degenerative meniscus

The effects of caudal mobilisation with movement (MWM) and caudal self-mobilisation with movement (SMWM) in relation to restricted internal rotation in the hip: A randomised control pilot study.

BACKGROUND: A loss of internal rotation (IR) of the hip is associated with hip pathology. Improving IR may improve hip range of motion (ROM) or prevent hip pathology. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the immediate effects of caudal mobilisation with movement (MWM) and caudal self-mobilisation with movement (SMWM) on young healthy male subjects with reduced IR of the hip. DESIGN: A randomised controlled trial was performed. Twenty-Two subjects were randomised into a MWM group (n = 6), SMWM group (n = 8) or a control group (n = 8). Congenital vertebral duplication: a predisposing risk factor for dissection.

Spontaneous cervical-artery dissection (CAD) is a major cause of cerebral ischaemia in young adults. While their pathophysiology remains still poorly understood, CAD is considered today as a multifactorial disease determined by general and local predisposing factors; these predisposing factors being predominantly constitutional abnormalities of the arterial wall. Here, we report an MRI-confirmed dissection of a duplicated vertebral artery, in a patient with attacks of vertigo due to cerebellar infarction following a minor neck trauma. Knowing that another case of vertebrobasilar CAD on a dupli

Assessment of hospital disaster preparedness for the 2010 FIFA World Cup using an internet-based, long-distance tabletop drill.

INTRODUCTION: The State University of New York at Downstate (SUNY) conducted a web-based long-distance tabletop drill (LDTT) designed to identify vulnerabilities in safety, security, communications, supplies, incident management, and surge capacity for a number of hospitals preceding the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The tabletop drill simulated a stampede and crush-type disaster at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa in anticipation of 2010 FIFA World Cup. The LDTT, entitled "Western Cape-Abilities", was conducted between May and September 2009, and encompassed nine hospitals in the Wes

Multisport vs. Single-Sport Training and Motor Coordination in Children: A Quasi-Experimental Pre-Post Comparison.

Background: This study aimed to compare changes in motor coordination associated with two different motor practice models-multisport and single-sport soccer training-in children, without implying causal effects of one training context over the other. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-post study (T0-T1) was conducted over 10 weeks in non-randomized, pre-existing groups. A total of 143 children (mean age: 6.21 ± 0.55 years; 107 males) were allocated to a Multisport Group (MG; n = 79) and a Single-sport Group (SG; n = 64).
