We describe an unusual case of pulmonary nocardiosis co-existing with Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome in a patient with autoimmune hemolytic anemia who was being treated with corticosteroids. This case highlights the importance of being aware of the possibility that infections can co-exist in immunosuppressed patients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of co-infection with Nocardia asteroides and S. stercoralis.

Genetic transformation is a potential tool for analyzing gene function and thereby identifying new drug and vaccine targets in parasitic nematodes, which adversely affect more than one billion people. We have previously developed a robust system for transgenesis in Strongyloides spp. using gonadal microinjection for gene transfer. In this system, transgenes are expressed in promoter-regulated fashion in the F1 but are silenced in subsequent generations, presumably because of their location in repetitive episomal arrays. To counteract this silencing, we explored transposon-mediated chromosomal

Infections and malignancies are common causes of pleural effusion. Among infectious causes, hyperinfection syndrome of Strongyloides stercoralis may occur in immunosuppressive patient. A 62-year-old man, known case of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) was presented with recurrent NHL stage IV and had undergone salvage chemotherapy. Patient subsequently developed pneumonia with bilateral pleural effusion and ascites. We reported rhabditiform larvae of S. stercoralis in pleural fluid of both lungs without infiltration by lymphoma cells. Stool for microscopic examination also revealed rhabditiform larva

Strongyloides stercoralis chronic infections are usually asymptomatic and underestimated. We used direct fresh stool examination, Ritchie's method, and agar plate culture for diagnosis in patients with eosinophilia and previous residence in endemic areas. The frequency of strongyloidosis detected among these patients was high: 21 of 42 were positive. Among them, 10 were positive only by agar plate culture. After ivermectin treatment, patients resulted negative for parasitological tests and reduced their eosinophil counts. Half of the submitted patients that were followed 4-12 months after trea

One hundred and fifty-three British soldiers and 86 Royal Air Force (RAF) personnel were deployed on a hostage rescue operation in Sierra Leone. For 3 days they were exposed to various infection risks and 6 weeks later some of the soldiers presented with gastrointestinal complaints. Both groups were screened with structured questionnaires, blood investigations and (where indicated) faecal microscopy and charcoal culture for helminths. Definite and probable cases of helminth infection were treated with albendazole and all soldiers were screened again after 3 months. Among the soldiers investiga

We consider the impact of test properties on the required sample size for the Bayesian design problem for comparing two proportions with error-prone data. Specifically, we examine four cases: a single diagnostic test and two independent diagnostic tests, both when the test properties are identical across populations and when they differ. Interval-based and moment-based sample-size determination criteria are contrasted using Monte Carlo simulation methods. We consider an application in which Strongyloides infections are compared in two populations.

Subjects in an disease-endemic area in Orissa, India concomitantly infected with filariasis and intestinal helminths had significantly lower intensity of filarial infection in comparison with those who were infected only with filariasis. Administration of albendazole resulted in a significant decrease in the prevalence of filarial antigenemia in subjects concomitantly infected with intestinal helminths, but produced little change in this infection measure in subjects infected only with Wuchereria bancrofti. These results indicate that intestinal helminths could play a role in the anti-filarial

A study was conducted to assess the breed resistance against nematode infections in Santa Ines, Ile de France and Suffolk male lambs over a 9-month period in São Paulo state, Brazil. Lambs were born during the winter (year 2000) and were weaned at 2 months of age. The animals were then housed and treated with anthelmintics to eliminate natural infections by gastrointestinal nematodes. In late October 2000, lambs were placed in a paddock, where they stayed until August of the following year. Fecal and blood samples were taken from each animal every 2 weeks. On the same day, a pasture sample was

A full length cDNA encoding an IgG immunoreactive antigen of Strongyloides stercoralis is described. A clone containing 1,328 bp insert was selected following screening of S. stercoralis cDNA library with an IgG fraction obtained from a pool of 78 S. stercoralis positive human sera samples. The nucleotide sequence of the 1,328 bp insert was found to be 70.5% A/T, reflecting a characteristic A/T codon bias of S. stercoralis. The nucleotide sequence of this insert identified a cDNA coding for a zinc finger protein. The conceptually translated amino acid sequence of the open reading frame for the

In Strongyloides ratti-infected rats, 2 peaks of egg excretion were observed; a large one with maximum egg production on days 7-8 of infection and a small more inconspicuous one around day 25. The second peak, which had been ignored in most studies, was produced by adults in the caecum and the colon. The adults were larger in length and had more embryonated eggs in the uterus compared with adults in the small intestine at day 25 post-infection. It is suggested that parasitic adults once expelled from the small intestine resettle and recover in the large intestine. Filter paper faecal culture c

Host-adapted, transformed, Strongyloides stercoralis third-stage larvae (L3+) were previously found to be antigenically different from free-living, infective, third-stage larvae (L3). These antigenic differences were reproduced by transformation of free-living larvae in tissue culture medium at 37 C over 24 hr. Transformed L3 of both derivations were given as challenge infections in diffusion chambers to naive mice and mice immunized with S. stercoralis L3. Within 12 hr, the challenge infections were killed regardless of whether the L3+ were generated in vitro or in vivo. Eosinophils, previous

It has been postulated that infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis is associated with asthma. We conducted a case-control study to determine whether the presence of parasites is associated with asthma. We undertook a retrospective analysis of 15,856 stool specimens received by our Parasitology Laboratory from January 1989 to December 1992. The diagnosis of asthma was secured by a chart review or a review of the computer diagnosis coding system. An association between asthma and Strongyloides was tested by calculating an odds ratio, as well as a Fisher's Exact Test to estimate the strength

The possible importance of mucosal mast cells in the expulsive mechanisms of mice against Strongyloides venezuelensis was examined. After a primary infection by subcutaneous inoculation with various doses into C57BL/6 mice, about 50% of the initial dose of infective larvae (L3) became adult worms and, regardless of the dose of infection, they were completely expelled by Day 12 with similar kinetics. Intestinal mastocytosis at the time of expulsion was comparable among groups given different doses of infection. A kinetic study after infection with 2000 L3 in C57BL/6 mice revealed that mastocyto

A repetitive administration of recombinant interleukin-3 (rIL-3), which can induce the expulsion of Strongyloides ratti in athymic nude mice, did not affect the expulsion of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. Nude mice infected with N. brasiliensis were injected i.p. with a total of 6.8 x 10(5) U rIL-3 or medium twice a day from Day 5 to Day 11 post-infection. The kinetics of expulsion estimated by egg excretion in faeces up to Day 20 post-infection and adult worm burden on Day 21 was not affected by the IL-3 administration. A similar administration with a higher dose (total 10.6 x 10(5) U) of rIL-

The results of quantitative stool examinations from a large number of rural Papua New Guineans permitted the establishment of age-prevalence and age-intensity profiles and frequency distributions of both Strongyloides cf. fuelleborni and hookworm. Strongyloides exhibited a unique age-prevalence profile which originated at about 40% in the youngest age group, rose to a maximum in those 4-5 years old, and then declined. The intensity of infection reached its peak in 12 month olds before declining. The frequency distribution of Strongyloides egg counts was markedly over-dispersed: k values were b

Evidence for the presence of 11 intestinal parasites in pre-school children from 4 rural villages in Ghana was obtained from an examination of stool samples. Striking differences were detected between the prevalence of some of the 6 common infections in the 4 villages. The prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides varied from about 76% in one village (Oshiyie, coastal savanna) to apparently 0% in another (Akuma, forest zone). No differences in prevalence for any infection were observed to be sex dependent. Investigation of the relationship between age of the children and prevalence showed that the de

Alveolar macrophages (AM) can be stimulated in vitro with material such as lipopolysaccharide, and this activation releases cytokines, collectively called interleukin-1, that can stimulate local cells such as fibroblasts, systemic cells such as lymphocytes, and/or distant parenchymal cells such as hepatocytes. During murine infection with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, AM are activated as the parasite larvae migrate through the lung. We examined AM for unstimulated release of lymphocyte-activating factor (LAF) and hepatocyte-stimulating factor (HSF) as evidence of in vivo activatio

Six hundred and forty-six patients with an eosinophilic pleocytosis were studied in Thailand over a 3-year period ending in March 1968. It was possible to segregate the cases into two clinical entities, which were termed typical eosinophilic meningitis and eosinophilic myeloencephalitis respectively. The clinical and laboratory finding of 484 cases of typical eosinophilic meningitis are reported here. The latter entity was generally benign and self-limited with a case mortality ratio of less than 0.5%. Acute severe headache was the most significant symptom. Fever was uncommon and abnormal neur
