The Influence of Asymmetric Hearing Loss on Peripheral and Central Auditory Processing Abilities in Patients With Vestibular Schwannoma.

OBJECTIVES: Asymmetric or unilateral hearing loss (AHL) may cause irreversible changes in the processing of acoustic signals in the auditory system. We aim to provide a comprehensive view of the auditory processing abilities for subjects with acquired AHL, and to examine the influence of AHL on speech perception under difficult conditions, and on auditory temporal and intensity processing. DESIGN: We examined peripheral and central auditory functions for 25 subjects with AHL resulting from vestibular schwannoma, and compared them to those from 24 normal-hearing controls that were matched with

Does posterior cruciate ligament sacrifice influence dynamic balance after total knee arthroplasty? Comparison of cruciate-retaining and cruciate-substituting designs in bilaterally operated patients.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate whether the posterior cruciate ligament sacrifice during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has any effect on postoperative standing balance or not. METHODS: The patients who underwent bilateral TKA with either CR or PS design were analyzed. 30 patients (10 PS, 20 CR) were included for the final analysis. TKA designs were compared in terms of Lysholm score, range of motion, and balance characteristics including somatosensorial, vestibular, and visual balance scales, adaptation, limits of stability, and weight-bearing/squat tests by computerized dynamic posturo

Bone conducted cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials: comparison of tone burst stimulus vs chirp stimulus.

PURPOSE: Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) is a test used to evaluate the function of otolith organs. In healthy individuals, air-conducted (AC) responses are obtained, whereas, in conductive hearing loss, the inability to transmit the signal well enough with AC stimuli has led to the need for bone-conducted (BC) stimuli. This study aimed to compare 500 Hz Chirp and Tone Burst stimuli in terms of latency and amplitude in BC cVEMP. METHODS: This prospective observational case control study included 35 healthy participants (70 ears) between the age of 20-50. Participants underwent VEM

On the differential diagnosis of Ménière's disease using low-frequency acoustic biasing of the 2f1-f2 DPOAE.

We have cyclically suppressed the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) with low-frequency tones (17-97 Hz) as a way of differentially diagnosing the endolymphatic hydrops assumed to be associated with Ménière's syndrome. Round-window electrocochleography (ECochG) was performed in subjects with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) on the day of DPOAE testing, and from which the amplitude of the summating potential (SP) was measured, to support the diagnosis of Ménière's syndrome based on symptoms. To summarize and compare the cyclic patterns of DPOAE modulation in these groups we

[Ocular tilt reaction in thalamic infarct].

Ocular tilt reaction (OTR) includes skew deviation, eye torsion and head tilt. It is usually accompanied by a tilt in the subjective visual vertical. OTR seems to reflect an otolithic dysfunction. This case report shows an OTR of central origin as a result of simultaneous paramedial thalamic and mesencephalon rostral infarcts.

Fluctuating Posterior Canal Function in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Depending on How and Where Otoconia Are Disposed.

OBJECTIVE: Though fluctuations in vestibular function represent a common finding in Menière's disease, we describe how benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) may result in fluctuations of vestibulo-ocular reflex for the involved canal depending on the disposition of otoliths. PATIENT: A 54-year-old woman suffering from refractory posterior canal (PC)-BPPV resulting in fluctuating PC function. INTERVENTIONS: Diagnostic evaluation and rehabilitative treatment for BPPV involving the affected PC. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Video-Frenzel and video-head impulse test (vHIT) findings before and af

Insights into Inner Ear Function and Disease Through Novel Visualization of the Ductus Reuniens, a Seminal Communication Between Hearing and Balance Mechanisms.

The sensory end-organs responsible for hearing and balance in the mammalian inner ear are connected via a small membranous duct known as the ductus reuniens (also known as the reuniting duct (DR)). The DR serves as a vital nexus linking the hearing and balance systems by providing the only endolymphatic connection between the cochlea and vestibular labyrinth. Recent studies have hypothesized new roles of the DR in inner ear function and disease, but a lack of knowledge regarding its 3D morphology and spatial configuration precludes testing of such hypotheses. We reconstructed the 3D morphology

Neutrophil-mediated immune response as a possible mechanism of acute unilateral vestibulopathy.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the underlying pathogenesis of acute unilateral vestibulopathy (AUV) using gene expression profiling combined with bioinformatics analysis. METHODS: Total RNA was extracted from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of ten AUV patients in the acute phase and from ten controls. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between these two groups were screened using microarray analysis with the cut-off criteria (|fold changes| > 1.5 and p-value < 0.05). Functional enrichment analysis of DEGs was performed using Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Ge

Hearing capacities and otolith size in two ophidiiform species (Ophidion rochei and Carapus acus).

Numerous studies have highlighted the diversity of fish inner ear morphology. However, the function of the shape, size and orientation of the different structures remains poorly understood. The saccule (otolithic endorgan) is considered to be the principal hearing organ in fishes and it has been hypothesized that sagitta (saccular otolith) shape and size affect hearing capacities: large sagittae are thought to increase sensitivity. The sagittae of many ophidiids and carapids occupy a large volume inside the neurocranium. Hence they are a good structure with which to test the size hypothesis. T

Sensory mismatch induces autonomic responses associated with hippocampal theta waves in rats.

Hippocampal (HIP) theta power increases during sensory mismatch, which has been suggested to induce motion sickness with autonomic abnormality (Zou et al., 2009 [29]). To investigate relationships between hippocampal theta rhythm and autonomic functions, theta waves in the HIP and electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded during sensory mismatch by backward translocation in awake rats. The rats were placed on a treadmill affixed to a motion stage that was translocated along a figure 8-shaped track. The rats were trained to run forward on the treadmill at the same speed as that of forward translo

Effects of drug countermeasures for space motion sickness on working memory in humans.

Space motion sickness (SMS) is a problem during the first 72 h of space flight and during transitions from different gravity environments. There currently are no effective drug countermeasures for SMS that also accommodate the retention of optimal cognitive function. This creates a dilemma for astronauts because cognitive skills are particularly important during gravity transitions (e.g., take-off and landing). To quantify the cognitive side effects of potential drug countermeasures, an automated delayed matching-to-sample (DMTS) procedure was used to assess visual working memory before and af
