[Prenatal and perinatal virus infections from gynecologic and obstetrical viewpoints].

Virus infections in pregnancy cause a varying risk of embryopathy or fetopathy according to the type of causative virus. The spectrum encompasses the high prenatal risk of rubella or cytomegaly and perinatally, also hepatitis B to the low or absent risk of mumps, measles, or hepatitis A. If all preventive and diagnostic measures are observed prenatal rubella infection can today be prevented. All women in the reproductive age group require testing of the rubella titre or rubella immunization. Cytomegaly in pregnancy can neither be diagnosed nor prevented. This is very unfortunate since the inci

[Varicella-zoster virus infections in the immunosuppressed child. Treatment with Acyclovir and controls].

Sixty minutes intravenous infusions of Acyclovir were given at 5 to 10 mg/kg 3 times daily for 6 to 11 days in 20 immunodeficient children with varicella (9 cases) and herpes zoster (11 cases) in a controlled open study. Twelve patients had a life-threatening illness. All patients who received therapy before the first 4 days had a more rapid cessation of new vesicles formation and more rapid scarring. Fourteen controlled children had accelerated clearance of viral antigens from vesicles. In 19 cases, virus was no longer isolated after the 3rd day. Eighteen patients recovered within 6 to 10 day

Computerized tomography in Reye's syndrome: evidence for pathological cerebral vasodilatation.

The authors present two children with Reye's syndrome who were studied with serial computerized tomographic (CT) scanning. Scans performed with contrast enhancement during the acute phase of this disease showed evidence of pathological cerebral vasodilatation. The possible mechanism for this vasodilatation and the increased intracranial pressure (ICP) seen in Reye's syndrome are discussed.

Childhood lymphatic leukemia: prenatal seasonality and possible association with congenital varicella.

A statistically significant seasonality by month of birth, which differed for children diagnosed as having acute lymphatic leukemia in the under 2, 2-3 and 4-9-year age groups, was observed in urban counties of upstate New York. This suggested that the mothers of patients diagnosed in these three age groups might have been exposed to leukemogenic factors during different trimesters, but with each trimester consisting of the same specific group of months. Since a similar birth-month seasonality was not observed in rural regions, it seemed likely that leukemogenic factors might operate with a gr

Representations of mpox in UK news media during the 2022 outbreak: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: The 2022 global mpox outbreak was the first to involve sustained community transmission outside endemic regions, disproportionat … cs, delivery of health promotion, and 'anchoring' mpox to other infectious diseases (e.g. COVID-19, chickenpox) to aid understanding. Articles described mpox's epidemiological origins in Africa, transmission routes, and epidemiological updates, often noting transmission during GBMSM events. Public health messaging focused on advice about transmission reducti …

Hepatitis B (82%), chickenpox (76%), and mumps-measles-rubella (72%) were the most frequently assessed vaccines. Adverse effects associated with CYC include cytopenia (86%), nausea (52%), liver toxicity (20%), hair loss (31%), hemorrhagic cystitis (37%), allergic reactions (16%) …

Explainable clinical diagnosis through unexploited yet optimized fine-tuned ConvNeXt Models for accurate monkeypox disease classification.

Deep learning (DL) has had an incredible influence on many different scientific areas over the past couple of decades. Particularly in the field of healthcare, DL strategies were able to outclass other existing methodologies in image processing. The rapid expansion of the monkeypox endemic to over 40 nations apart from Africa has prompted serious worries in the realm of public health. Given that monkeypox can have symptoms that are akin to both chickenpox and measles, early detection can be difficult. Fortunately, due to the developments in artificial intelligence approaches, it can be impleme…

This is evident for herpes … use life-threatening disease in immunocompromised patients. VZV is closely related to HSV-1, causes chickenpox during primary infection, and establishes life-long latency in ganglia, from where it can reactivate to cause herpes zoster (shingles). Unlike HSV-1, VZV only infects humans, and there are limited model systems; thus, little is known concerning how …

The use of gabapentin for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Varicella-zoster virus causes chickenpox and can reemerge later in life to cause herpes zoster or shingles. One of the most common and disabling complications of herpes zoster is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). OBJECTIVES: This article reviews the current primary literature about the efficacy and tolerability of gabapentin for the treatment of PHN. Gabapentin pharmacokinetics and drug interactions are also reviewed. METHODS: A literature search in the English language was conducted using OVID Web, which contained the following databases: MEDLINE (1966-present), EMBASE (1980-2002), …
