Health related quality of life in a nationally representative sample of haematological patients.

OBJECTIVES: Knowledge of health related quality of life of haematological patients is limited. This study aimed at investigating the prevalence and predictors of symptoms and problems in a representative sample of haematological patients in Denmark. METHODS: A random sample of patients with leukaemia, multiple myeloma and advanced lymphoma (n = 732) received the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality-of-life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30). Mean scores were calculated. In addition, scores were dichotomised using two thresholds: patients reporting at least 'a little'

Using a digital patient powered research network to identify outcomes of importance to patients with multiple myeloma.

BACKGROUND: Social media platforms give patients a voice by allowing them to discuss their health and connect with others. These unfiltered and genuine reports offer direct access to what matters most to patients. Exploring the patient-reported outcomes discussed in these platforms reveal clinical insights and behavioral patterns of the real-world patient journey. This research study reviewed health-related quality of life (HRQoL) concepts reported by patients with multiple myeloma (MM). METHODS: Data were obtained using the Belong.life patient-powered research network (PPRN) using social med

Education, Employment, and Financial Outcomes in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors-A Systematic Review.

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer face unique challenges. We aimed to describe (i) education, employment, and financial outcomes and (ii) determinants for adverse outcomes in AYA cancer survivors. We performed a systematic literature search. We included original research articles on AYA (15-39 years of age) cancer survivors (≥2 years after diagnosis) and our outcomes of interest. We narratively synthesized the results of the included articles. We included 35 articles (24 quantitative and 11 qualitative studies). Patients in education had to interrupt their education during cancer

Burning Issues/Hot Topics: The Charcot Foot.

Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy remains one of the most serious complications of diabetic neuropathy, with the potential for rapid progression to deformity, ulceration and limb-threatening outcomes. The earliest signs and symptoms are often subtle and easily missed, yet early recognition provides a narrow window of opportunity to prevent irreversible structural change. Contemporary diagnostic pathways are underpinned by close clinical observation and correlation of bedside findings with detailed imaging analysis, enabling earlier identification of active disease before collapse occurs. Fertility management and outcomes after CAR T-cell therapy: an international survey from the Cellular Therapy and Immunobiology working party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: CAR T-cell therapy has become a highly effective treatment for hematological malignancies, and emerging evidence indicates promising benefits for non-oncohematological conditions. As its clinical use broadens, understanding long-term outcomes and late complications is crucial. One critical yet understudied area is fertility, for which current evidence remains limited and no formal guidelines provide direction for patients undergoing CAR T-cell therapy. METHODS: To address this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional survey on behalf of the Cellular Therapy and Immunobiology Working Pa

Impact of Real-World Outpatient Cancer Rehabilitation Services on Health-Related Quality of Life of Cancer Survivors across 12 Diagnosis Types in the United States.

Compared to adults without cancer, cancer survivors report poorer health-related quality of life (HRQOL), which is associated with negative treatment outcomes and increased healthcare use. Cancer-specialized physical and occupational therapy (PT/OT) could optimize HRQOL; however, the impact among survivors with non-breast malignancies is unknown. This retrospective (2020-2022), observational, study of medical record data of 12 cancer types, examined pre/post-HRQOL among cancer survivors who completed PT/OT. PROMIS® HRQOL measures: Global Health (physical [GPH] and mental [GMH]), Physical Funct

Ferroptosis, lipid metabolism, and genetic regulation in postoperative rehabilitation of elderly hip fractures: from molecular mechanisms to clinical translation.

BACKGROUND: Elderly hip fracture represents a major global public health challenge, with postoperative rehabilitation involving complex molecular mechanisms and metabolic networks. Beyond osteoporotic fractures, pathological hip fractures caused by tumor bone metastasis constitute a non-negligible proportion in elderly patients, with molecular pathological mechanisms significantly different from osteoporotic fractures. Recent research has confirmed that ferroptosis (iron-dependent regulated cell death) and lipid metabolism dysregulation are key links in fracture healing and functional recovery

Clinical and Therapeutic Implications of Male Obesity.

The prevalence of obesity, a disorder linked to numerous comorbidities and metabolic complications, has recently increased dramatically worldwide and is highly prevalent in men, even at a young age. Compared to female patients, men with obesity more frequently have delayed diagnosis, higher severity of obesity, increased mortality rate, and only a minority of obese male patients are successfully treated, including with bariatric surgery. The aim of this review was to present the current state of knowledge about the clinical and therapeutic implications of obesity diagnosed in males.

Pathophysiology and treatment of osteoporosis: challenges for clinical practice in older people.

Osteoporosis, a common chronic metabolic bone disease is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. As the prevalence of osteoporosis increases with age, a paralleled elevation in the rate of incident fragility fractures will be observed. This narrative review explores the origins of bone and considers physiological mechanisms involved in bone homeostasis relevant to management and treatment. Secondary causes of osteoporosis, as well as osteosarcopenia are discussed followed by an overview of the commonly used pharmacological treatments for osteoporosis in older people.

Nutritional approaches in combating therapeutic resistance and enhancing treatment efficacy in cancer: the impact of ketogenic diets.

Cancer remains a major global health challenge, with therapeutic resistance significantly limiting treatment success. Traditional approaches, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, often encounter barriers such as metastasis and adverse effects on healthy tissues. The Warburg effect, which describes cancer cells’ reliance on glucose fermentation despite oxygen availability, has prompted investigations into alternative metabolic interventions. The ketogenic diet (KD), characterized by high fat intake and low carbohydrate intake, induces a metabolic shift that may selectively disadva

Design and Rationale of Prolonged Nightly Fasting for Multiple Myeloma Prevention (PROFAST): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an established, modifiable risk factor of multiple myeloma (MM); yet, no lifestyle interventions are routinely recommended for patients with overweight or obesity with MM precursor conditions. Prolonged nightly fasting is a simple, practical dietary regimen supported by research, suggesting that the synchronization of feeding-fasting timing with sleep-wake cycles favorably affects metabolic pathways implicated in MM. We describe the design and rationale of a randomized controlled pilot trial evaluating the efficacy of a regular, prolonged nighttime fasting schedule among
