Long-Term Prognostic Value of Coronary Atherosclerotic Plaque Characteristics Assessed by Computerized Tomographic Angiography.

We aimed to present the long-term prognostic role of coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) in a cohort of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and noncritical stenosis. A total of 1138 patients who underwent coronary CTA for suspected CAD were included in the study. For the categorization of the coronary atherosclerotic plaque (CAP), the coronary system was divided into 16 segments. For each segment, CAPs were categorized as calcified, noncalcified, and mixed. All-cause and cardiovascular (CV) mortality data were collected for prognostic evaluation. Coronary CTA analyses showed

Coronary artery calcification scoring system based on the coronary artery calcium data and reporting system (CAC-DRS) predicts major adverse cardiovascular events or all-cause death in patients with potentially curable lung cancer without a history of cardiovascular disease.

The coronary artery calcium data and reporting system (CAC-DRS) is a novel reporting system based on CAC severity. Lung cancer patients have a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), for which CAC severity may provide additional prognostic information. Using non-gated, non-contrast computed tomography (CT), we evaluated the CAC-DRS for predicting CVD and all-cause death in patients with potentially curable resected lung cancer. We retrospectively studied 309 consecutive patients without a history of CVD (mean age 67.4 ± 8.2 years, 61% male) who underwent curative surgery for non-small-cell

Biologics May Prevent Cardiovascular Events in Rheumatoid Arthritis by Inhibiting Coronary Plaque Formation and Stabilizing High-Risk Lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) decrease cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and whether biologic DMARDs might have a beneficial effect on coronary plaque formation or progression. METHODS: In this single-center observational cohort study, 150 patients underwent computed tomographic angiography for evaluation of coronary atherosclerosis (total, noncalcified, mixed/calcified, and low-attenuation plaque); 101 had repeat assessments within a mean ± SD of 6.9 ± 0.3 years to evaluate plaque progression. All CVD event

Impact of diabetes on coronary artery plaque volume by coronary CT angiography and subsequent adverse cardiac events.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the impact of diabetes on coronary artery total plaque volume (TPV) and adverse events in long-term follow-up. METHODS: One-hundred-and-eight diabetic patients were matched to 324 non-diabetic patients, with respect to age, sex, body-mass index, hypertension, smoking habits, LDL and HDL cholesterol, family history for CAD as well as aspirin and statin medication. In all patients, TPV was quantified from coronary CT angiographies (CTA) using dedicated software. All-cause mortality, acute coronary syndrome and late revascularisation (>90 days) served as combined endpo

Coronary CT angiography features of ruptured and high-risk atherosclerotic plaques: Correlation with intra-vascular ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Features of ruptured and high-risk plaque have been described on coronary computed tomography angiography (coronary CTA), but not systematically assessed against intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). We examined the ability of coronary CTA to identify IVUS defined ruptured plaque and Virtual Histology Intravascular Ultrasound (VH-IVUS) defined thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA). METHODS: Sixty-three patients (32 with acute coronary syndrome and 31 with stable angina) underwent coronary CTA, IVUS and VH-IVUS. Plaque rupture on CTA was defined as intra-plaque contrast and its frequency compar

Incidence and Factors Associated With the Occurrence of Pulmonary Vein Narrowing After Cryoballoon Ablation.

BACKGROUND: In contrast with traditional radiofrequency ablation, little is known about the influence of cryoballoon ablation on the morphology of pulmonary veins (PVs). We evaluated the influence of cryoballoon ablation on the PV dimension (PVD) and investigated the factors associated with a reduction of the PVD. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventy-four patients who underwent cryoballoon ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation were included in the present study. All subjects underwent contrast-enhanced computed tomography both before and at 3 months after the procedure. The PVD (cross-sectional

Coronary Artery Calcium Distribution Is an Independent Predictor of Incident Major Coronary Heart Disease Events: Results From the Framingham Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: The presence and extent of coronary artery calcium (CAC) are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events. We determined whether information on the distribution of CAC and coronary dominance as detected by cardiac computed tomography were incremental to traditional Agatston score (AS) in predicting incident major coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS AND RESULTS: We assessed total AS and the presence of CAC per coronary artery, per segment, and coronary dominance by computed tomography in participants from the offspring and third-generation cohorts of the Framingham He

Prognostic performance of coronary computed tomography angiography in asymptomatic individuals as compared to symptomatic patients with an appropriate indication.

INTRODUCTION: Current Appropriatene Usa Criteria exclude coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) in asymptomatic individuals. We compared the prognostic value of coronary CTA in asymptomatic individuals to symptomatic patients with "definitely appropriate" indications for coronary CTA. METHODS: Consecutive patients without previously known CAD referred for a CTA exam were divided into 2 groups. One group consisted ofasymptomatic individuals, the other of symptomatic patients with a "definitely appropriate" indication for coronary CT (unable to exercise and/or with an uninterpretable el

Anomalous origin of the coronary artery arising from the opposite sinus: prevalence and outcomes in patients undergoing coronary CTA.

AIMS: The impact of coronary computed tomographic angiography (CTA) on management of anomalous origin of the coronary artery arising from the opposite sinus (ACAOS) remains uncertain. We examined the prevalence, anatomical characterization, and outcomes of ACAOS patients undergoing CTA. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among 5991 patients referred for CTA at two tertiary hospitals between January 2004 and June 2014, we identified 103 patients (1.7% prevalence) with 110 ACAOS vessels. Mean age was 52 years (range 5-83, 63% male), with 55% previously known ACAOS and 45% discovered on CTA. ACAOS subtypes in

Prevalence and severity of arterial calcifications in pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) compared to hospital controls. Novel insights into the vascular phenotype of PXE.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a monogenetic disorder with progressive calcifications of the skin, the Bruch's membrane in the eyes and the arterial wall. Vascular disease is considered to be very prevalent, but the whole-body distribution of arterial calcifications in PXE is unknown. We aimed to systematically investigate arterial calcifications in PXE. METHODS: We included 104 PXE patients from the Dutch PXE cohort and 93 hospital controls. All subjects underwent full-body low-dose CT scans without contrast. To investigate the prevalence and severity of arterial calc

Assessment of differences in mechanical properties and thickness of temporal and occipital bones and correlation with age in Japanese forensic samples.

The mechanical properties and thickness of adult temporal and occipital bones were examined in modern Japanese forensic samples. Cranial bones were obtained from 293 Japanese corpses (179 men and 114 women). During autopsy, left temporal (LT), right temporal (RT), and occipital (O) bone samples were extracted from each skull. Sample thickness (ST) was measured using multidetector computed tomographic imaging. The fracture load (FL) of each sample was measured by a bending test, in which the flexural strength (FS) was calculated. The FL and ST values for O were significantly greater compared wi

Differences in airway lumen area between supine and upright computed tomography in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: No clinical studies to date have compared the inspiratory and expiratory airway lumen area between supine and standing positions. Thus, the aims of this study were twofold: (1) to compare inspiratory and expiratory airway lumen area (IAA and EAA, respectively) on computed tomography (CT) among supine and standing positions; and (2) to investigate if IAA and EAA are associated with lung function abnormality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: Forty-eight patients with COPD underwent both low-dose conventional (supine position) and upright CT (sta

Airway wall thickness and airflow limitations in asthma assessed in quantitative computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a frequent chronic disease of the airways. In spite of the fact that symptoms of asthma are well known, the pathogenesis has not yet been fully understood. Quantitative computed tomography (qCT) of the lung allows for the measurment of a set of parameters. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of quantitative computed tomography in the assessment of airway wall thickness in asthma. METHODS: The prospective study was performed on a group of 83 patients with well-defined, long-term asthma between 2016 and 2018. The control group was composed of 30 healthy vo

Cardiac computed tomography improves the identification of cardiomechanical complications among patients with suspected left ventricular assist device malfunction.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are increasingly used for durable mechanical circulatory support in advanced heart failure. While LVAD therapy provides substantial improvement in mortality and quality of life, long-term therapy confers increased risk for device complications. We evaluated if cardiac computed tomography (CCT) improves the detection of cardiomechanical complications among patients with LVAD and suspected device malfunction. METHODS: In this study, we compared the diagnostic performance of CCT and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) for the identification of

Association of Obesity with Quantitative Chest CT Measured Airway Wall Thickness in WTC Workers with Lower Airway Disease.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that wall area percent (WAP), a quantitative CT (QCT) indicator of airway wall thickness and, presumably, inflammation, is associated with adverse longitudinal expiratory flow trajectories in WTC workers, but that obesity and weight gain also seemed to be independently predictive of the latter. Previous studies have reported no association between WAP and obesity, so we investigated that association in nonsmoking WTC-exposed individuals and healthy unexposed controls. METHODS: We assessed WAP using the Chest Imaging Platform QCT system in a segmental bronchu

Aberrant Internal Carotid Artery in the Tympanic Cavity.

OBJECTIVES: Presence of aberrant internal carotid artery (ICA) in the tympanic cavity is a very rare case and therefore the diagnosis is a challenge. Here, the authors aimed to address the importance of the diagnosis since the intervention to the middle ear and implants is increasing in number and this condition may lead to life-threatening bleeding. METHODS: Between 2012 and 2016, among the patients referred to the authors' Radiology Department from the Department of Otolaringology for the evaluation of the temporal region for various indications, the authors reported this anomaly in 6 patie
