Premature coronary heart disease and traditional risk factors-can we do better?

BACKGROUND: Traditional cardiovascular risk factors are strong predictors of an increased likelihood for premature CHD. Considering the bene … he patients,92 (73.6%) were male, 113 (90.4%) were married, 58 (46.4%) were smokers,19 (15.2%) were opium users, 97 (77.6%) had dyslipidemia, 44 (35.2%) had hypertension, and 33 (26.4%) had diabetes mellitus. In addition, family history was presented in 54 patients (43.2%). Among the study population, 120 patients (96%) had at least one of the tradition …

[Study on the mechanism of electroacupuncture of "Neiguan" (PC 6) in inhibiting ventricular arrhythmia induced by hypothalamic electrostimulation in the rabbit].

OBJECTIVE: To research whether opiate receptors in the hypothalamic arcuate nuclei (ARC) participate in the inhibitory effect of electroacup … ion of naloxone or normal saline in the ARC region (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Hypothalamic ARC and it's opium receptors participate in the inhibitory effect of EA on hypothalamic midline region electro-stimulation-induced HVE in the rabbit.

Association of Treatment With Medications for Opioid Use Disorder With Mortality After Hospitalization for Injection Drug Use-Associated Infective Endocarditis.

IMPORTANCE: Although hospitalizations for injection drug use-associated infective endocarditis (IDU-IE) have increased during the opioid crisis, utilization of and mortality associated with receipt of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) after discharge from the hospital among patients with IDU-IE are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the proportion of patients receiving MOUD after hospitalization for IDU-IE and the association of MOUD receipt with mortality. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study used a population registry with person-level medical claims, presc

A chart review comparing paregoric to methadone in the treatment of neonatal opioid withdrawal.

Neonatal opioid withdrawal often requires treatment but there have been few recent studies of current pharmacological interventions to guide treatment. This retrospective chart review provides an exploratory examination of newborns treated with either methadone or paregoric for opioid withdrawal and outlines dosage ranges and intervals, side effects, and clinical outcomes of the two regimens. The outcome variables examined were time to resolution of withdrawal symptoms, rate of decrease in symptom severity, and length of hospital stay. There were no observed differences in outcome variables be

Psychosocial antecedents of injection risk reduction: a multivariate analysis.

The AIDS risk reduction model (ARRM) predicts decreased occurrence of AIDS risk behavior through a three-stage process: (a) perceiving one's behavior as risky and recognizing one's skills to reduce the behavior, (b) forming an intention to change behavior, and (c) acting on that intention. We used the ARRM to test a stage-based longitudinal structural equation model of the impact of intention to reduce injection risk behavior on subsequent behavior change in a sample of 294 HIV-negative opiate-addicted individuals in treatment. Intended risk reduction and continuous participation in treatment

A chimeric study of the molecular basis of affinity and selectivity of the kappa and the delta opioid receptors. Potential role of extracellular domains.

Within the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors, a picture is emerging which contrasts the binding of small ligands and the binding of peptides to the seven-helix configuration of the proteins. Because of its unique richness in both peptide and non-peptide ligands, the opioid receptor family offers several advantages for achieving a better understanding of similarities and differences in ligand/receptor interactions across different classes of agonists and antagonists. Since multiple, naturally occurring, ligands interact with the multiple receptors with varying degrees of selectivity,

Residual curarization in the neonate after caesarean section.

The transplacental transfer and the neonatal effects of atracurium 0.3 mg.kg-1 (ED95) were compared with those of d-tubocurarine at the usual clinical dose of 0.3 mg.kg-1 (ED90) in 46 patients undergoing elective Caesarean section. The atracurium group (25 patients) was similar to the d-tubocurarine group (21 patients) as far as age, parity and time intervals between precurarization, induction, skin incision, muscle relaxant administration, hysterotomy and birth. The transplacental transfer of atracurium was lower than that of d-tubocurarine, with a feto-maternal ratio of 9 +/- 3% for atracuri

[The psychopathology of early and chronic psychotic symptoms in young drug-users].

Among the psychotic symptoms in juvenile drug-consumers one can find autonomous, i.e. drug-independent developments, whose connection with the drug-abuse is to be assessed in differing ways. A beginning psychosis can be modified in its actual symptoms by drug-consumption. On the other hand one must consider the manifestation of a latent psychosis or purely symptomatic psychosis, which, in its symptoms, can hardly be distinguished from schizophrenia. Finally drug-induced personality-changes can develop together with secondary psychotic symptoms. Psychotic symptoms are determined and influenced

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation after thoracotomy. Pain relief and peak expiratory flow rate--a trial of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

Forty patients scheduled to undergo thoracotomy were randomly allocated to receive either transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with intramuscular papaveretum (20 patients) or intramuscular papaveretum alone (20 patients) for postoperative pain relief. Total intramuscular analgesic requirements in the first 24 hours, time to satisfactory transfer to oral analgesia, antiemetic requirements and length of stay in hospital postoperatively were noted. Peak expiratory flow rate was compared pre- and postoperatively in the two groups. Use of nerve stimulation did not significantly alter the req

Neonatal abstinence syndrome: assessment and management.

A scoring system for the neonatal abstinence syndrome has been devised and implemented as both a clinical and investigative tool. The score monitors the passively addicted infant in a more comprehensive and objective fashion, and facilitates a more precise evaluation of the clinical status of the infant undergoing withdrawal. In addition, the scoring system has been applied in research designed to test the comparative usefulness of various pharmacologic agents currently recommended for the neonatal abstinence syndrome, and has been found useful in following the progression and diminution of wi
