PURPOSE: The presence or absence of the spontaneous retinal venous pulse is an important clinical sign, especially when one is evaluating a patient who may have increased intracranial pressure. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a large group of healthy patients, correlating optic disc characteristics, choroidal pulse, and brachial pulse pressure with the presence and intensity of the spontaneous retinal venous pulse.
METHODS: Ninety-seven patients were studied correlating these parameters with their fundus photographs. Ocular pneumotonometry as a measure of the choroidal pulse and the

Microsurgical occlusion of two vortex veins was carried out on seventeen eyes of 16 patients affected with senile pigment epithelial detachment. Ten eyes had avascular pigment epithelium detachment and 7 eyes had pigment epithelium detachment associated with choroidal new vessels. Regression or stabilisation of the fundus lesions occurred in one of the eyes affected with vascular pigment epithelium detachment. On the other hand 3 months postoperatively, the pigment epithelium detachment had flattened with significant improvement of the visual acuity, in 4 of the 10 eyes affected with avascular

BACKGROUND: Uveitis consists of a spectrum of inflammatory disorders characterized by ocular inflammation. The underlying pathophysiology co … ment of NIU. In addition, the levels of IL-6 are elevated in other ocular vascular diseases such as retinal vein occlusion and diabetic macular edema. The roles of IL-6 inhibition may be broadened in the future to include the management of retinal vascular diseases and non-uveitic macular edema.

OBJECTIVE: Anti-VEGF therapies have transformed the management of neovascular age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion. This class-wide pharmacovigilance study evaluated the disproportionality of reported ocular adverse events (AEs) among anti-VEGF agents using postmarketing data.
DESIGN: A population-based, observational pharmacovigilance study.
PARTICIPANTS: Reports from the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database (January 2004-September 2024) for individuals treated with anti-VEG…

PURPOSE: To characterize retinal functional consequences of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in a rat model of experimental glaucoma.
METHODS: Unilateral elevation of IOP was produced by hypertonic saline injection into an episcleral vein in 20 adult male Brown-Norway rats. IOP was measured in both eyes of awake animals four to five times per week. After 5 weeks, animals were dark adapted overnight (>12 hours) and full-field electroretinograms (ERGs) were obtained simultaneously from both eyes. Scotopic ERG stimuli were brief white flashes (-6.64-2.72 log cd-s/m(2)). Photopic responses wer

Rationale: Neovascular ocular diseases (NODs) represent the leading cause of visual impairment globally. Despite significant advances in anti-angiogenic therapies targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), persistent challenges remain prevalent. As a proof-of-concept study, we herein demonstrate the effectiveness of targeted degradation of VEGF with bispecific aptamer-based lysosome-targeting chimeras (referred to as VED-LYTACs). Methods: VED-LYTACs were constructed with three distinct modules: a mannose-6-phosphate receptor (M6PR)-binding motif containing an M6PR aptamer, a VEGF-bin

PURPOSE: To identify any temporal trends in the diagnosis of plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) by experts.
DESIGN: Reliability analysis.
METHODS: ROP experts were recruited in 2007 and 2016 to classify 34 wide-field fundus images of ROP as plus, pre-plus, or normal, coded as "3," "2," and "1," respectively, in the database. The main outcome was the average calculated score for each image in each cohort. Secondary outcomes included correlation on the relative ordering of the images in 2016 vs 2007, interexpert agreement, and intraexpert agreement.
RESULTS: The average score fo

UNLABELLED: Sickle cell Retinopathy is increasingly being recognised as a cause of significant ocular morbidity and blindness in Africa south of the Sahara. This study looked for retinopathy in a cohort of 90 Nigerians with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
METHOD: The cohort consisted of black Nigerians from the Hausa-Fulani, Ibo and Yoruba, as well as other minority ethnic groups resident in the Federal Capital Territory aged between 5-36 yr. 88 patients were SS and only 2 SC.
RESULTS: SCD related posterior lesions were seen in 22 patients (24%). Of these, 19 cases (21%) had Non Proliferative Sic

PURPOSE: To study possible causes of the gradual venous occlusion that precedes the formation of venous loops and reduplications in diabetic retinopathy using histopathological techniques.
METHODS: Casts of the retinal vascular system from six eyes of five diabetic patients were used to identify venous loops and reduplications. Subsequently the lesions were studied by immunohistochemistry using antibodies against cellular and non-cellular components previously shown to be disturbed in the diabetic retina.
RESULTS: In all eyes the venous abnormalities identified on the casts were accompanied

This is a review of neovascularization of the iris and the neovascular glaucoma that often follows. With the aging of our population, this has become a more frequent cause of blindness and enucleation of eyes. Iris neovascularization is never primary, but is always secondary to other ocular disorders. The pathology is described based on the study of 110 globes. Diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment are discussed.

Several longer-acting interventions for nAMD, diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein occlusion, uveitis and glaucoma have either been developed or are in late-phase development, some of which employ novel mechanisms of actions, and all of which of promise longer (≥3 month) treatment intervals. INTRODUCTION: Budd-Chiari syndrome is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by venous drainage obstruction of the liver and is extremely rare. The clinical manifestations are usually ascites, varicose veins and in severe cases - hepatic insufficiency. Behcet's disease is a chronic, idiopathic, inflammatory disease that manifests as obstructive vasculitis and affects a variety of organ systems. Ocular involvement occurs in approximately 70% of the patients, and is a major clinical criterion in the diagnosis. Rarely, Behcet's disease can be a cause of Budd-Chiari syndrome. In these ca

PURPOSE: To report a case of polycythemia vera (PV) with subretinal fluid accumulation after the administration of prostaglandin I2 (PGI2) analogue.
OBSERVATIONS: A 57-year-old woman diagnosed as having PV was referred to our department for the evaluation of severe metamorphopsia in the left eye, which gradually progressed after the initiation of oral administration of PGI2 mimetics. At the first visit, the patient's best-corrected visual acuities (BCVAs) were 20/20 OD and 20/30 OS. Fundus examination and optical coherence tomography revealed the presence of subretinal fluid (SRF) in the left

INTRODUCTION: The dexamethasone (DEX) implant is an FDA approved treatment for diabetic macular edema, non-infectious posterior uveitis, and macular edema secondary to branch or central retinal vein occlusions. We describe a case of anterior chamber (AC) migration of a DEX implant in a patient with a history of congenital glaucoma and perform a review of the literature on this particular complication, summarizing the common risk factors, subsequent complications, and management options.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 46-year-old female with a history of congenital glaucoma, status post cataract extracti…
