Non-communicable diseases, infection and survival in a retrospective cohort of Indigenous and non-Indigenous adults in central Australia.

Among Indigenous patients, diabetes increased the odds of current Staphylococcus aureus BSI (OR=1.6, 95% CI 1.0 to 2.5) and prior skin infections (adjusted OR=2.1, 95% CI 1.4 to 3.3). Standard treatment of strongyloidiasis is ivermectin, however, mortality owing to transient bacteremia in the setting of hyperinfection syndrome is high. Therefore, bacteremia prophylaxis with gram negative rod coverage should be considered before antiparasitic agent initiation.

The prevalence of human T-cell leukemia virus type I infection in patients with hematologic and nonhematologic diseases in an adult T-cell leukemia-endemic area of Japan.

Strongyloides stercoralis infection alters liver enzyme levels in alcoholic patients.

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloides stercoralis infection can develop into a severe and lifethreatening condition in high-risk groups, such as alcoholics. However, few studies assess the effect of these comorbidities on patients’ health. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hematological, biochemical and hepatic biomarkers and the production of total immunoglobulin E in alcoholic patients infected with S. stercoralis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a case-control study involving 240 alcoholic patients, 60 infected and 180 non-infected with S. stercoralis. Evaluation of blood biomarkers was performed using automa

Prevalence of Blastocystis hominis, Cryptosporidium, and Strongyloidesstercoralis among patients with colorectal carcinoma in Egypt.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death, with strong environmental associations and genetic risk factors. Although some microorganisms have been linked to carcinogenesis in CRC, the prevalence of parasites and their potential role in carcinogenesis remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and association of the parasites Blastocystis, Cryptosporidium, and Strongyloides in CRC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted, including 120 participants, divided into 60 patients with CRC and 60 healthy controls. Patient

A Gata3 enhancer necessary for ILC2 development and function.

The type 2 helper effector program is driven by the master transcription factor GATA3 and can be expressed by subsets of both innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and adaptive CD4+ T helper (Th) cells. While ILC2s and Th2 cells acquire their type 2 differentiation program under very different contexts, the distinct regulatory mechanisms governing this common program are only partially understood. Here we show that the differentiation of ILC2s, and their concomitant high level of GATA3 expression, are controlled by a Gata3 enhancer, Gata3 +674/762, that plays only a minimal role in Th2 cell differentia

Strongyloides stercoralis Coinfection Is Associated With Greater Disease Severity, Higher Bacterial Burden, and Elevated Plasma Matrix Metalloproteinases in Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Helminths and tuberculosis (TB) largely overlap at the population level. Whether helminth infections influence disease severity and bacterial burdens in TB is not well understood. METHODS: This study was conducted to examine the disease severity in a cohort of pulmonary TB (PTB) individuals with (Ss+) or without (Ss-) seropositivity for Strongyloides stercoralis infection. RESULTS: Ss+ was associated with increased risk of cavitation (odds ratio [OR], 4.54; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.33-9.04; P < .0001) and bilateral lung involvement (OR, 5.97; 95% CI, 3.03-12.09; P < .0001)

A Case of Rheumatoid Arthritis with Strongyloides stercoralis Hyperinfection.

The patient was a 83-year- old male who worked as a farmer. He had complaints of weight loss, abdominal pain and joint pains for almost 5 months. Twenty days ago, the patient was checked at another hospital for complaints of occasional coughing and bloody sputum. He was treated with a diagnosis of pneumonia. His respiratory complaints were reduced, but there was no relief of his ongoing abdominal pain. Gastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy were performed to examine for possible etiologies of continuous abdominal pain. Biopsies were taken from duodenal bulbus and second duodenal segment. Intense e

Epidemiology and risk factors of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in Papua, Indonesia: a molecular diagnostic study.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasitic worm that is of considerable clinical relevance. Indeed, it may persist asymptomatically for many years, but can lead to potentially fatal dissemination when the host's immune status is impaired. As commonly employed stool microscopy techniques (e.g. Kato-Katz thick smear) fail to detect S. stercoralis, the epidemiology is poorly understood. In 2013, we conducted a cross-sectional household survey in the district of Mimika in Papua, Indonesia. A total of 331 individuals, aged 1 month to 44 years, had a single stool sample subjected to real-time polymera

Evaluation of Two DNA Extraction Methods for Detection of Strongyloides stercoralis Infection.

Strongyloides stercoralis is present worldwide, but its prevalence is still uncertain, mainly due to the lack of sensitivity of diagnostic methods. Molecular techniques are under development, but a standardized protocol is still unavailable. We compared the sensitivity of real-time PCR, using two extraction protocols, with that of the Baermann technique. Samples were collected in the framework of the baseline screening of a randomized clinical trial evaluating moxidectin against S. stercoralis in Lao People's Democratic Republic. Two stool samples from each participant were processed by the Ba

Acute infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis increases intestine production IL-10, reduces Th1/Th2/Th17 induction in colon and attenuates Dextran Sulfate Sodium-induced colitis in BALB/c mice.

Helminth infection can reduce the severity of inflammatory bowel disease. However, the modulatory mechanisms elicited by helminth infection are not yet fully understood and vary depending on the experimental model. Herein we evaluated the effect of acute infection of BALB/c mice with Strongyloides venezuelensis on the clinical course of ulcerative colitis induced by Dextran Sulfate Sodium (DSS) treatment of these animals. For the experiments, S. venezuelensis-infected BALB/c mice were treated orally with 4% DSS solution for seven days. As controls, we used untreated S. venezuelensis infected,

Parasitological and transcriptomic comparison of Strongyloides ratti infections in natural and in suboptimal permissive hosts.

The nematode genus Strongyloides consists of fairly species-specific small intestinal parasites of various vertebrates, among them the human pathogen S. stercoralis. Between the parthenogenetic parasitic generations these worms can also form single facultative sexual free-living generations. In addition to their primary hosts, several species can also live more or less well in other permissive hosts, which are sometimes not very closely related with the normal host. For example, S. stercoralis can also infect dogs and non-human primates. Here we compare the infection and reproductive success o
