Tibialis Posterior Tendon Dislocation: A Review and Suggested Classification.

Tibialis posterior tendon dislocation is a rarely described entity that is easily missed, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. A review of the English published data on the topic showed inconsistency in the reporting of injuries and surgical management techniques, leading us to describe a novel classification system to guide treatment and future reporting. We also describe a case of tibialis posterior tendon dislocation in a professional volleyball player and our surgical technique for correction, including retromalleolar groove deepening.

An Ultrasound Classification of Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL) Injury.

BACKGROUND: To develop a classification of ATFL injury based on the ultrasonography. METHODS: The ultrasound images of 560 cases that had chronic ankle instability were studied from May 2012 to May 2015. All the patients accepted ultrasonography to type the ATFL injury. RESULTS: The ATFL injuries could be divided into six subtypes based on ultrasound imaging: I: Intact ligament; II: Injury at the fibular side; III:Injury at the talar side; IV: Tear at the midsubstance; V:Ligament absorbed; VI:Combined injury. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound could be used to evaluate and type the injury of ATFL. This…

New classification of spinal lipomas based on embryonic stage.

OBJECTIVE Spinal lipomas are generally thought to occur as a result of failed primary neurulation. However, some clinical features cannot be explained by this theory. The authors propose a novel classification of spinal lipomas based on embryonic changes seen during primary and secondary neurulation. METHODS A total of 677 patients with occult spinal dysraphism underwent 699 surgeries between August 2002 and May 2015 at the National Center for Child Health and Development and Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Medical Center. This group of patients had 378 spinal lipomas, including 119 conus spinal…

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita: classification, diagnosis, perioperative care, and anesthesia.

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a rare disorder characterized by non-progressive, multiple contractures. In addition to affected extremities, patients may also present microstomia, decreased temporomandibular joint mobility. Although the etiology of AMC is unclear, any factor that decreases fetal movement is responsible for AMC. Thus, accurate diagnosis and classification are crucial to the appropriate treatment of AMC. The development of ultrasound technology has enabled prenatal diagnosis. Very early treatment is favorable, and multidisciplinary treatment is necessary to improve …

Segregation of Patients for Intrapartum Monitoring, using Robson's Classification.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring labour by intermittent or continuous foetal heart rate monitoring has been discussed widely in literature. Robson's classification has categorized pregnant women in ten groups. The study proposes to examine in which patients one must recommend continuous or intermittent foetal heart rate monitoring. AIM: To study the effect of Continuous Electronic Foetal Monitoring (CEFM) on the overall rate of operative deliveries as well as the rate using Robson's classification and the neonatal outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After Institutional Review Board approval, low risk pa…

SpineNet: Automated classification and evidence visualization in spinal MRIs.

The objective of this work is to automatically produce radiological gradings of spinal lumbar MRIs and also localize the predicted pathologies. We show that this can be achieved via a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) framework that takes intervertebral disc volumes as inputs and is trained only on disc-specific class labels. Our contributions are: (i) a CNN architecture that predicts multiple gradings at once, and we propose variants of the architecture including using 3D convolutions; (ii) showing that this architecture can be trained using a multi-task loss function without requiring segme

Automated Classification of Benign and Malignant Proliferative Breast Lesions.

Misclassification of breast lesions can result in either cancer progression or unnecessary chemotherapy. Automated classification tools are seen as promising second opinion providers in reducing such errors. We have developed predictive algorithms that automate the categorization of breast lesions as either benign usual ductal hyperplasia (UDH) or malignant ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). From diagnosed breast biopsy images from two hospitals, we obtained 392 biomarkers using Dong et al.'s (2014) computational tools for nuclei identification and feature extraction. We implemented six machine …

Genetic Landscape and Classification of Peripheral T Cell Lymphomas.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Peripheral T cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are markedly heterogeneous at the clinical, pathological, and molecular levels. This review will discuss genetic findings in PTCL with special emphasis on how they impact lymphoma classification. RECENT FINDINGS: Sequencing studies have identified recurrent genetic alterations in nearly every PTCL subtype. In anaplastic large cell lymphoma, these studies have revealed novel chromosomal rearrangements and mutations that have prognostic significance and may suggest new therapeutic approaches. Angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma has been foun…

Novel Evidence-Based Classification of Cavernous Venous Occlusive Disease.

PURPOSE: The primary aim of our study was to determine whether an evidence-based rationale could categorize cavernous venous occlusive disea … surgical intervention using resistive index values. Our data further suggest that an evidence-based classification of cavernous venous occlusive disease by color Doppler ultrasound is possible and can triage patients to penile prosthetic placement.

Classification chaos in coeliac disease: Does it really matter?

The spectrum of mucosal pathology in coeliac disease (CD), initially defined by Marsh in 1992 has been subjected to several modifications in the following years by Oberhuber, then by Corazza and Villanaci, and finally by Ensari. The present study, aimed to end the ongoing confusion regarding the classification of mucosal pathology in CD by applying all the classifications proposed so far on a large series of cases. A total of 270 duodenal biopsies taken from the distal duodenum of patients with a diagnosis of CD were included in the study. All biopsies were classified according to Marsh, Oberh…

Classification of dependence-related skin lesions: a new proposal.

A new theoretical framework on the development of pressure ulcers and other dependence-related lesions requires continued in-depth analysis of their conceptual bases. This study reports the historical background, definitions, and production mechanisms of these lesions, describing the differential pathognomonic features of pressure and/or shear ulcers, moisture-associated skin damage, and lesions from rubbing or friction. It also discusses the combined/multifactorial lesions that can be found in the clinical setting. Finally, it presents the new classification of these lesions proposed by the S…

[Eosinophilic pneumonia, how to differentiate: classification and diagnostic approach].

Eosinophilic pneumonia is characterized by pulmonary eosinophilia associated with and/or alveolar eosinophilia. Furthermore, blood eosinophilia may be absent particularly in patients who have benefited beforehand of corticosteroids. The most common causes are parasites and drugs. According to the classification, we distinguish idiopathic pneumonia with eosinophils, those related to vasculitis and those of known etiology. Extrapulmonary involvement is frequently found in the subgroup of vasculitis. It is important to diagnose and start treatment quickly to reduce the risk of complications. The …

Focal cortical dysplasia: Molecular disturbances and clinicopathological classification (Review).

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is one of the most important causes of drug-resistant epilepsy in paediatric patients, particularly in those below the age of 3. Even though over 40 years have passed since the first description of the entity by Taylor, the exact mechanisms causing these cortical abnormalities remain unelucidated. In this review, we summarise the current knowledge on clinical and histopathological aspects, taking into account the new classification system proposed by the International League Against Epilepsy. We focus on the clinicopathological associations and differences in pos…

[Distal radius fractures: Which classification is the right one?].

None of the classification systems for distal radius fractures is ideal. However a validated system to analyze these fractures is available that is based on the "metaphysis, epiphysis, ulna" (MEU) classification and the "patient, accident, fracture" (PAF) system. It makes it possible to understand the injury and select the best treatment.

[Patient-Accident-Fracture (PAF) classification of distal radius fractures].

Despite the huge amount of literature devoted to acute distal radius fractures, there is currently no consensus as to treatment recommendations. There is no universally accepted anatomical classification other than the three main categories of the AO classification. The authors believe that the only way to improve this field is to stratify the patients according to their general health and functional needs. They propose a new classification system that they have used since 2009 and demonstrate its therapeutic, epidemiological and teaching values.
