A radioimmunoassay has been developed for detecting human schistosomiasis with a highly purified Schistosoma mansoni egg antigen labelled with iodine-125. The antigen, major serologic antigen 1 (M.S.A.1), has striking immunochemical and species specificity and appears to be the principal antigen responsible for the granulomatous response to S. mansoni eggs. This 125I-antigen was tested with 5 microliter of patient serum as a potential serodiagnostic test for schistosomiasis. 92 control sera from uninfected St. Vincentian patients were seronegative. In studies on 135 lightly infected St. Lucian

Tissue injury (chronic disease) associated with persistent LCM infection is apparently caused by the host immune response to the virus. Employing parabiosis or cell transfer from hyperimmune donors to isologous virus carriers, the tissue injury of chronic disease could be initiated and/or intensified. Furthermore, the transfer of anti-LCM antibody to SWR/J carrier mice results in acute necrotizing inflammatory lesions in regions of viral persistence, followed by chronic mononuclear infiltrates quite similar to those seen after the transfer of immune cells. The pathogenesis of the nonglomerular

The presence of antibodies to rubella, cytomegalovirus and Toxoplasma gondii was determined at birth and at 6 months of age in a group of 147 infants with cord serum IgM levels >/= 19.0 mg/dl and in 92 control infants. Maternal syphilis serology was determined in both groups as well. No significant differences in the prevalence or levels of antibodies to these pathogens were found between the two groups which might have led to the diagnosis of unsuspected intrauterine infection. Persistence of antibodies to 6 months of age was similar in the two groups, indicating that this is not a useful ind

In afoveate species such as mice, it is accepted that gaze is typically redirected by head movements with a saccade-and-fixate strategy, while the eyes primarily stabilize vision within a limited oculomotor range. This view suggests that the accompanying eye movements are primarily reflexive, driven by mechanisms like the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). However, emerging evidence challenges this assumption, suggesting that eye movements during active head motion may not be purely reflex-driven. Here, we directly test whether eye movements in mice are actively coordinated as part of voluntary ga

Recent studies suggest coccidioidomycosis can be found outside regions not considered to be endemic for Coccidioides species. We reviewed our experience with coccidioidomycosis at a large quaternary medical center in southeastern Michigan, an area not typically considered to be endemic for this infection. In the last decade, we cared for 18 patients with proven (11) or probable (7) coccidioidomycosis. All patients had a history of travel or prior residence in areas known to be endemic for Coccidioides species; for 16, the presumed source of exposure to Coccidioides was in southern Arizona. The

We recently described a protein O-glycosylation pathway conserved in all species of the Burkholderia genus that results in the synthesis and incorporation of a trisaccharide glycan to membrane-exported proteins. Here, we exploited this system to construct and evaluate a diagnostic tool for glanders. Burkholderia mallei, the causative agent of glanders, is a highly infectious and fatal zoonotic pathogen that infects horses, mules, donkeys, and occasionally humans. A highly sensitive and specific diagnostic tool is crucial for the control, elimination, and eradication of B. mallei infections. We

Burkholderia mallei is the causative agent of glanders which is a highly contagious and fatal disease of equines. Considering the nature and severity of the disease in equines, and potential of transmission to human beings, glanders is recognised as a 'notifiable' disease in many countries. An increasing number of glanders outbreaks throughout the Asian continents, including India, have been noticed recently. In view of the recent re-emergence of the disease, the present study was undertaken to estimate the prevalence of glanders among indigenous equines from different parts of India. Serum sa

BACKGROUND: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare inherited disease of the phagocyte NADPH oxidase system that causes defective production of toxic oxygen metabolites, impaired bacterial and fungal killing, and recurrent life-threatening infections, mostly by catalase-producing organisms. We report for the first time, to our knowledge, chronic infections with Actinomyces species in 10 patients with CGD. Actinomycosis is a chronic granulomatous condition that commonly manifests as cervicofacial, pulmonary, or abdominal disease, caused by slowly progressive infection with oral and gastro

Ketoconazole was given to 18 patients with coccidioidomycosis. Fourteen had received prior antifungal chemotherapy with amphotericin B, miconazole, or both. Ten patients had pulmonary disease, two had meningitis, and six had extrameningeal disseminated disease. The initial dose of ketoconazole was 200 mg per day; it was later increased to 400 mg per day for some patients. All strains of Coccididioides immitis tested were sensitive to ketoconazole. Approximately 2-4 hr after an oral dose of 200 mg of ketoconazole, levels of the drug in blood peaked at approximately 2 micrograms/ml. Higher conce
