Research Review: Developmental origins of depression - a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many observational studies have found a direct association between adverse in utero, perinatal and postnatal exposures and offspring's depression. These findings are consistent with the 'developmental origins of disease hypothesis'. But no review has comprehensively summarized the roles of these exposures. This review aims to systematically scrutinize the strength of associations between individual prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal exposures and subsequent depression in offspring. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize the literature from the EM

Fractionating the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test: Distinct roles of large-scale cortical networks in prodromal Alzheimer's disease.

Successful episodic memory calls upon a number of different cognitive processes that are supported by the coordination of several large-scale cortical networks. Previous work from our group has demonstrated dissociable anatomic substrates at different stages of memory in patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of the current study was to extend the understanding of brain-behavior associations underlying a commonly administered neuropsychological assessment of verbal episodic memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test; RAVLT) by determining the cortical network contributi

Fatigue: a common but poorly understood symptom in neurological and non-neurological diseases.

Fatigue is a severely disabling symptom that can substantially impair quality of life and employment prospects, and has serious socioeconomic consequences. Different individual and disease-related variables interact to generate this complex symptom, leading to clinical heterogeneity. We currently lack a common understanding and definition of fatigue and its origins, thereby impeding professional exchange among disciplines regarding diagnosis and underlying pathophysiology. To aid the development of a common language that encapsulates the heterogeneity of fatigue, we propose a taxonomy consisti

Deep learning-enabled discovery of antibiotics effective against Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a common Gram-negative pathogen with increasing resistance to all recommended antibiotics. There is a critical need to improve the efficiency of the antibiotic hit discovery process to replenish the drug development pipeline. Here, we show that deep learning models can augment high-throughput screens to identify readily available molecules with narrow-spectrum activity against difficult-to-treat strains of N. gonorrhoeae. We phenotypically tested 38,650 small molecules for N. gonorrhoeae growth inhibition to train a predictive graph neural network (GNN) model. We bench

From Narratives to Diagnosis: A Machine Learning Framework for Classifying Sleep Disorders in Aging Populations: The sleepCare Platform.

Background/Objectives: Sleep disorders are prevalent among aging populations and are often linked to cognitive decline, chronic conditions, and reduced quality of life. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as polysomnography, are resource-intensive and limited in accessibility. Meanwhile, individuals frequently describe their sleep experiences through unstructured narratives in clinical notes, online forums, and telehealth platforms. This study proposes a machine learning pipeline (sleepCare) that classifies sleep-related narratives into clinically meaningful categories, including stress-relat

Interdisciplinary Approach to Identify and Characterize COVID-19 Misinformation on Twitter: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Studying COVID-19 misinformation on Twitter presents methodological challenges. A computational approach can analyze large data sets, but it is limited when interpreting context. A qualitative approach allows for a deeper analysis of content, but it is labor-intensive and feasible only for smaller data sets. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify and characterize tweets containing COVID-19 misinformation. METHODS: Tweets geolocated to the Philippines (January 1 to March 21, 2020) containing the words coronavirus, covid, and ncov were mined using the GetOldTweets3 Python library. This pr

Next-generation multicenter studies: using artificial intelligence to automatically process unstructured health records of patients with lung cancer across multiple institutions.

BACKGROUND: Manual abstraction of real-world data (RWD) from unstructured health records (HRs) remains resource intensive, error prone, and highly variable across institutions. Large language models (LLMs) offer a scalable alternative, but their performance in multicenter oncology settings is not fully validated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a multicenter study within the French Large & Unified Cancer Cohort (LUCC) consortium to compare the accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI)-based data extraction against manual abstraction by clinical research professionals. A fine-tuned LLM was a…

Investigative models in erectile dysfunction: a state-of-the-art review of current animal models.

INTRODUCTION: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common male sexual disorder producing a significant negative impact on the physical and psychosocial health of men and their partners. The development of ED is frequently attributable to both psychogenic factors as well as physiological alterations in neural, vascular, hormonal, and endothelial function. While the complex nature of human sexual function cannot possibly be replicated fully, the use of animal models provides a valid alternative to the investigation and evaluation of sexual dysfunction. AIM: To review the existing English literature p

Clinical prediction rules for cognitive outcomes post-stroke: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of stroke are at a higher risk of cognitive syndromes, including dementia and delirium. Timely identification of those at-risk for cognitive syndromes could ensure better clinical management and implementation of risk reduction strategies. This study updates and appraises current evidence on prognostic accuracy of multicomponent risk models for post-stroke cognitive syndromes. METHODS: In this updated systematic review, we searched multidisciplinary electronic databases between November 2019 and October 2024 for relevant studies. An updated search was conducted on May 30

How Foundational Is the Retina Foundation Model? Estimating RETFound's Label Efficiency on Binary Classification of Normal versus Abnormal OCT Images.

OBJECTIVE: While the availability of public internet-scale datasets of images and language has catalyzed remarkable progress in machine learning, medical datasets are constrained by regulations protecting patient privacy and the time and cost required for curation and labeling. Self-supervised learning or pretraining has demonstrated great success in learning meaningful representations from large unlabeled datasets to enable efficient learning on downstream tasks. In ophthalmology, the RETFound model, a large vision transformer (ViT-L) model trained by masked autoencoding on 1.6 million color

Parsing-based approach for entity extraction from natural language software requirements.

Software requirements are written in natural language, so they are inherently ambiguous. This ambiguity results in the misinterpretation of the requirements and leads to an incorrect implementation of the system that does not meet the user's needs. So, it is important for all the stakeholders to comprehend the requirements. The requirement statements revolve around the requirement entities. Identifying requirement entities is essential to understand requirements, and they are used in identifying coreferent entities, creating glossaries, producing summaries of documents, feature extraction, req

Retrieval-grounded multilingual LLM assistance for island smallholder farmers.

BACKGROUND: Smallholder farmers on remote, depopulating islands have limited access to advisory services, and their locally specific agronomic knowledge, often expressed in regional dialect, is poorly represented in the corpora on which large language models are trained. A general-purpose chatbot therefore answers local questions fluently but unreliably. A conversational artificial intelligence assistant, Falco eleonorae, was developed for the farmers and cooperatives of Kythera and Antikythera, Greece. METHODS: The assistant is a thin Backend-for-Frontend proxy in front of a managed, geospat…
