Research review: Constraining heterogeneity: the social brain and its development in autism spectrum disorder.

The expression of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is highly heterogeneous, owing to the complex interactions between genes, the brain, and behavior throughout development. Here we present a model of ASD that implicates an early and initial failure to develop the specialized functions of one or more of the set of neuroanatomical structures involved in social information processing (i.e., the 'social brain'). From this early and primary disruption, abnormal brain development is canalized because the individual with an ASD must develop in a highly social world without the specialized neural system

Investigating face-property specific processing in the right OFA.

Within the neural face-processing network, the right occipital face area (rOFA) plays a prominent role, and it has been suggested that it receives both feed-forward and re-entrant feedback from other face sensitive areas. Its functional role is less well understood and whether the rOFA is involved in the initial analysis of a face stimulus or in the detailed integration of different face properties remains an open question. The present study investigated the functional role of the rOFA with regard to different face properties (identity, expression, and gaze) using transcranial magnetic stimula

Theory of mind and verbal working memory deficits in parents of autistic children.

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential values of executive function and social cognition deficits as endophenotypes of autism. While theory of mind (ToM) is generally accepted as a unitary concept, some have suggested that ToM may be separated into two components (mental state reasoning and decoding). In this study, both aspects of ToM and verbal working memory abilities were investigated with relatively demanding tasks. The authors used a neurocognitive battery to compare the executive function and social cognition skills of 76 parents of autistic probands with 41 parent

Visual-spatial disembedding in Parkinson's disease.

Visual-spatial disembedding requires a person to visually scan the stimulus and allocate spatial selective attention to the locations of relevant stimuli. Parkinson's disease (PD) is often associated with visual-spatial deficits, but the influence of PD on disembedding is not entirely known. The goal of this study is to learn whether participants with PD have defective visuospatial disembedding and whether this defect responds to dopaminergic treatment. We also wanted to examine the relationship of disembedding with other cognitive processes and the different parkinsonian clinical symptoms. Pa

Recognition and reading aloud of kana and kanji word: an fMRI study.

It has been proposed that different brain regions are recruited for processing two Japanese writing systems, namely, kanji (morphograms) and kana (syllabograms). However, this difference may depend upon what type of word was used and also on what type of task was performed. Using fMRI, we investigated brain activation for processing kanji and kana words with similar high familiarity in two tasks: word recognition and reading aloud. During both tasks, words and non-words were presented side by side, and the subjects were required to press a button corresponding to the real word in the word reco

Acute neuropsychological effects of MDMA and ethanol (co-)administration in healthy volunteers.

RATIONALE: In Western societies, a considerable percentage of young people expose themselves to 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or "ecstasy"). Commonly, ecstasy is used in combination with other substances, in particular alcohol (ethanol). MDMA induces both arousing as well as hallucinogenic effects, whereas ethanol is a general central nervous system depressant. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to assess the acute effects of single and co-administration of MDMA and ethanol on executive, memory, psychomotor, visuomotor, visuospatial and attention function, as well as on subj

Histone deacetylase inhibitors improve learning consolidation in young and in KA-induced-neurodegeneration and SAMP-8-mutant mice.

Histone deacetylases (HDAC) are enzymes that maintain chromatin in a condensate state, related with absence of transcription. We have studied the role of HDAC on learning and memory processes. Both eyeblink classical conditioning (EBCC) and object recognition memory (ORM) induced an increase in histone H3 acetylation (Ac-H3). Systemic treatment with HDAC inhibitors improved cognitive processes in EBCC and in ORM tests. Immunohistochemistry and gene expression analyses indicated that administration of HDAC inhibitors decreased the stimulation threshold for Ac-H3, and gene expression to reach th

The mental representation of ordered sequences in visual neglect.

Recently, left spatial neglect phenomena have been reported for the mental representation of numbers, i.e. the mental number line (Zorzi et al., 2002; Vuilleumier et al., 2004). The present study aimed at replicating the findings of Zorzi et al. (2002) in a number bisection task with small numbers and at extending the investigation to larger numbers up to 100, letters in the alphabet, days of the week and months of the year. Five patients with left spatial neglect and 20 healthy control subjects performed four mental bisection tasks (numbers, letters, days, and months tasks) where participants

A longitudinal assessment of executive function skills and their association with math performance.

The present study was designed to examine both concurrent and predictive associations between scores on a measure of executive function (EF) skills, the Contingency Naming Test (CNT), during the early school-age years. A secondary aim of the study was to examine the association between EF skills and mathematics performance. We administered tests of mathematics ability, and the CNT, to 178 children at ages 6 to 7, 8 to 9, and 10 to 11 years. From the CNT we obtained measures of response fluency/efficiency, working memory, and inhibition. The results demonstrate main effects of age on all CNT me

Converging evidence for triple word form theory in children with dyslexia.

This article has 3 parts. The 1st part provides an overview of the family genetics, brain imaging, and treatment research in the University of Washington Multidisciplinary Learning Disabilities Center (UWLDC) over the past decade that points to a probable genetic basis for the unusual difficulty that individuals with dyslexia encounter in learning to read and spell. Phenotyping studies have found evidence that phonological, orthographic, and morphological word forms and their parts may contribute uniquely to this difficulty. At the same time, reviews of treatment studies in the UWLDC (which fo

Amygdala dysfunction in men with the fragile X premutation.

Premutation alleles (55-200 CGG repeats) of the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene are associated with autism spectrum disorder in childhood, premature ovarian failure, and the neurodegenerative disorder, fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). FXTAS, and perhaps the other clinical presentations among carriers, are thought to be due to toxic gain-of-function of elevated levels of the expanded-repeat FMR1 mRNA. Previous structural MRI studies have implicated the amygdala as a potential site of dysfunction underlying social deficits and/or risk for FXTAS. As a preliminary in

Differential contributions of hippocampus, amygdala and perirhinal cortex to recognition of novel objects, contextual stimuli and stimulus relationships.

This study examined contributions of the hippocampus, amygdala and perirhinal cortex to memory. Rats performed a cover task, and changes to stimulus identity or relationships were used to test incidental memory. Rats with hippocampal damage showed deficient responses to relationship changes, but demonstrated knowledge of the position and identity of the target object. They over-focused on the most predictive stimuli, and failed to acquire associations including surrounding cues. Rats with amygdala damage responded to changes involving distal stimuli, and showed deficient responses to novel obj

Error-correction problems in autism: evidence for a monitoring impairment?

With a task involving the launching of missiles at targets, Malenka et al. (1982) and C. Frith and Done (1989) showed that schizophrenic patients with delusions of alien control and auditory hallucinations were likely to leave erroneous responses uncorrected whose outcomes were not visible until the missile hit or failed to hit the target, while being able to correct visible errors adequately. This is consistent with an impairment in the central monitoring of action. Using a similar task, we found that children with autism were more likely than controls to fail to correct both kinds of error.

Functional anatomy and differential time courses of neural processing for explicit, inferred, and illusory contours. An event-related fMRI study.

The perception of shape does not necessarily require viewing an explicit outline figure. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging we examined the time courses of neural activations provoked by shapes defined by (1) lines, (2) illusory contour inducers, and (3) reversed inducers. SPM99 was used to analyze the common and differential neural responses associated with the stimuli and their temporal derivatives. Illusory figures versus reversed inducers activated extrastriate cortex. Reversed inducers versus illusory figures activated the right parietal cortex. For both illusory an

Visual analytics of surveillance data on foodborne vibriosis, United States, 1973-2010.

Foodborne illnesses caused by microbial and chemical contaminants in food are a substantial health burden worldwide. In 2007, human vibriosis (non-cholera Vibrio infections) became a notifiable disease in the United States. In addition, Vibrio species are among the 31 major known pathogens transmitted through food in the United States. Diverse surveillance systems for foodborne pathogens also track outbreaks, illnesses, hospitalization and deaths due to non-cholera vibrios. Considering the recognition of vibriosis as a notifiable disease in the United States and the availability of diverse sur

Human-like Dexterous Grasping Through Reinforcement Learning and Multimodal Perception.

Dexterous robotic grasping with multifingered hands remains a critical challenge in non-visual environments, where diverse object geometries and material properties demand adaptive force modulation and tactile-aware manipulation. To address this, we propose the Reinforcement Learning-Based Multimodal Perception (RLMP) framework, which integrates human-like grasping intuition through operator-worn gloves with tactile-guided reinforcement learning. The framework's key innovation lies in its Tactile-Driven DCNN architecture-a lightweight convolutional network achieving 98.5% object recognition ac

Abstract Property-selective Clusters Link Continuous Property Representations to Discrete Category-selective Regions in Human Higher Visual Cortex.

Object representations in the human higher visual cortex (HVC) support complex recognition behaviors early in development, yet the principles linking continuous dimensional representations and discrete category-selective areas in the HVC remain incompletely understood. Here, we propose a "property-cluster-category" organization that bridges object conceptual dimensions and discrete category areas in the HVC. Using a large-scale naturalistic stimulus data set and voxel-wise encoding methods, we analyzed the encoding patterns of a low-dimensional abstract property space and identified distinct b

Recommendations on Screening for Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine Retinopathy (2016 Revision).

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommendations on screening for chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy are revised in light of new information about the prevalence of toxicity, risk factors, fundus distribution, and effectiveness of screening tools. PATTERN OF RETINOPATHY: Although the locus of toxic damage is parafoveal in many eyes, Asian patients often show an extramacular pattern of damage. DOSE: We recommend a maximum daily HCQ use of ≤5.0 mg/kg real weight, which correlates better with risk than ideal weight. There are no similar demographic data fo

The neural correlates of social attention: automatic orienting to social and nonsocial cues.

Previous evidence suggests that directional social cues (e.g., eye gaze) cause automatic shifts in attention toward gaze direction. It has been proposed that automatic attentional orienting driven by social cues (social orienting) involves a different neural network from automatic orienting driven by nonsocial cues. However, previous neuroimaging studies on social orienting have only compared gaze cues to symbolic cues, which typically engage top-down mechanisms. Therefore, we directly compared the neural activity involved in social orienting to that involved in purely automatic nonsocial orie

Cortisol-induced enhancement of emotional face processing in social phobia depends on symptom severity and motivational context.

We investigated the effects of cortisol administration on approach and avoidance tendencies in 20 patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were measured during a reaction time task, in which patients evaluated the emotional expression of photographs of happy and angry faces by making an approaching (flexion) or avoiding (extension) arm movement. Patients showed significant avoidance tendencies for angry but not for happy faces, both in the placebo and cortisol condition. Moreover, ERP analyses showed a significant interaction of condition by severity o
