Palliative care in the intensive care unit: fundamental aspects, ethical frameworks, and challenges in the Brazilian context.

Significant medical advancements over the last century have reduced in-hospital mortality but raised concerns about prolonged hospitalizations and aggressive treatments potentially compromising the quality of life of critically ill patients. In Brazil, healthcare professionals often encounter ethical dilemmas and hesitancy when navigating orthothanasia and life-sustaining treatment decisions. This review examines the fundamental aspects of palliative care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), addressing the research question: What are the fundamental aspects of palliative care in the ICU? The stud

Curriculum innovation in psychopharmacology for psychiatric nurse practitioner fellows: A case study.

The Annie Goodrich Post-Graduate Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) Fellowship, established in 2017, supports advanced practice nurses transitioning into independent psychiatric roles by emphasizing excellence in care and education. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP-BC) often enter practice with limited experience managing complex psychopharmacologic regimens, creating a critical gap in competency. To address this need, we developed a specialized psychopharmacology curriculum designed to strengthen foundational knowledge and promote confident, evidence-informed clinical dec

"Hold the retractor, that's it?" - A retrospective longitudinal evaluation-study of the surgical and the elective tertial in the practical year.

INTRODUCTION: In the context of the shortage of physicians, the practical year is an important component in the acquisition of future medical talent. Previous studies suggest that PJ students rate several satisfaction parameters significantly lower in the surgical term than in other terms. Poor perceptions of surgical topics may lead to a health care problem. The aim of the current study was to analyse in detail the specific comparison between compulsory surgical and other elective surgical terms. METHODS: 7762 anonymous online PJ evaluations at the Medical Faculty of Münster from 2007-2020 (

Developing a collaborative network for cystic fibrosis in Africa: A call to action.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that remains underrecognized across Africa, where limited diagnostic capacity, low awareness, and competing health priorities contribute to delayed or missed diagnoses [1-4]. Although increasing data suggests CF is more prevalent than previously believed in Africa, survival remains poor [1]. These challenges do not only affect people with CF (pwCF) in Africa but also have implications for global understanding of the disease, particularly among populations historically excluded from CF research and treatment advances. OBJECTIVE: This commu

Early experiences of the End of Life Choice Act 2019 amongst assisted dying practitioners in Aotearoa New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: The global trend of legalising assisted dying (AD) has reshaped end-of-life care practices, and Aotearoa New Zealand's adoption of the End of Life Choice Act (the Act) in 2019 represents a significant shift. Limited empirical research on AD in New Zealand after the enactment of the Act underscores the need for investigation. Conducting research in the early stages of AD implementation is crucial to building a strong knowledge base and laying the foundation for future research. This would ensure equitable and suitable service provision for the service users. AIM: This research capt
