Can Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis be Associated with Visual Impairment?

OBJECTIVE: It is believed that postural balance problems may contribute to the development of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Vision provides proprioceptive input by supplying information about body positions. Considering the fundamental role of vision in postural control, this study aims to investigate the relationship between AIS and the volume of the eye-moving muscles and the visual field. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included a total of 47 female individuals, with 24 having AIS and 23 being healthy participants. Magnetic resonance imaging was used

Long-term static stretching can decrease muscle stiffness: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Stretch training increases the range of motion of a joint. However, to date, the mechanisms behind such a stretching effect are not well understood. An earlier meta-analysis on several studies reported no changes in the passive properties of a muscle (i.e., muscle stiffness) following long-term stretch training with various types of stretching (static, dynamic, and proprioceptive neuromuscular stretching). However, in recent years, an increasing number of papers have reported the effects of long-term static stretching on muscle stiffness. The purpose of the present study was to examine the lon

The Effectiveness of Physical Therapy Intervention in a Seven-Year-Old Child With Congenital Talipes Equinovarus: A Case Report.

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), a prevalent congenital anomaly, is characterized by the backward bending of the hindfoot, the inward turning of the midfoot, and the turning or tilting of the front foot. The likelihood of experiencing clubfoot is higher in males and among firstborn offspring. Both genetic and environmental elements are recognized as factors that play a role in the occurrence of this developmental irregularity. It is diagnosed clinically because the abnormality has been visible since childhood, where one or both feet point downward and inward. If the deformity is not addr

Limb-specific thalamocortical tracts are impaired differently in hemiplegic and diplegic subtypes of cerebral palsy.

Thalamocortical pathways are considered crucial in the sensorimotor functioning of children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, previous research has been limited by non-specific tractography seeding and the lack of comparison between different CP subtypes. We compared limb-specific thalamocortical tracts between children with hemiplegic (HP, N = 15) or diplegic (DP, N = 10) CP and typically developed peers (N = 19). The cortical seed-points for the upper and lower extremities were selected (i) manually based on anatomical landmarks or (ii) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) act

Association of Cervical Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP) and Postural Instability in Patients with Parkinson's Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability is a common problem in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The appropriate cooperation of vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive signals along with apt anticipatory and adaptive postural responses is essential for postural stability. Abnormalities in this sensorimotor admixture lead to postural instability in PD. The function of vestibular otolith function and its central connections in postural instability of PD is still obscure. Cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) can be used to assess the function of the saccular part of otolith and its

Cutaneous information processing differs with load type during isometric finger abduction.

During submaximal isometric contraction, there are two different load types: maintenance of a constant limb angle while supporting an inertial load (position task) and maintenance of a constant force by pushing against a rigid restraint (force task). Previous studies demonstrated that performing the position task requires more proprioceptive information. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there would be a difference in cutaneous information processing between the position and force tasks by assessing the gating effect, which is reduction of amplitude of somatosensory evoked p

Successful Treatment of Ureteral Obstructive Lithiasis by Ureterotomy in a Domestic Hen.

A 2-year-old domestic hen was presented for a 15-day history of intermittent left leg lameness. The owners also observed a decrease in egg quality during that period. Physical examination of the bird revealed a generalized weakness with a flattened pale comb. Neurological evaluation of the left leg found a proprioceptive deficit with no loss of pain sensitivity. Whole body radiographic images showed a marked reduction of abdominal detail, a large amount of "grit" (mineral opacity) in the ventriculus, intestinal dilation, and a metallic foreign body (nail) in the digestive tract. Abnormal resul

Cerebral meningioma associated with extensive calvarium osteolysis and presumed intratumoral carcinoma metastasis in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat presented with a 3-month history of weight loss, dysorexia and lethargy. Neurological examination revealed decreased mentation, absent menace response bilaterally and proprioceptive deficits affecting all four limbs; these findings were consistent with a forebrain disorder. Brain CT revealed an extensive asymmetric permeative osteolysis destroying two-thirds of the circumference of the calvarium and involving the right frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital bones, as well as the left parietal bone. This extensive bone lysis wa

A gait-based paradigm to investigate central body representation in cervical dystonia patients.

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) is a common adult-onset idiopathic form of dystonia characterized by an abnormal head posture caused by an excessive activity of the neck muscles. The position of the head is important to direct viewpoint in the rounding environment, and the body orientation, during gait, must be coherent with the subjective straight ahead (SSA). An alteration of the SSA, as in the case of CD patients, could affect gait when visual input is not available. The aim of this study was to probe the behavior of patients with CD during blindfolded walking, investigating the ability

Dataset with Tactile and Kinesthetic Information from a Human Forearm and Its Application to Deep Learning.

There are physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI) applications where the robot has to grab the human body, such as rescue or assistive robotics. Being able to precisely estimate the grasping location when grabbing a human limb is crucial to perform a safe manipulation of the human. Computer vision methods provide pre-grasp information with strong constraints imposed by the field environments. Force-based compliant control, after grasping, limits the amount of applied strength. On the other hand, valuable tactile and proprioceptive information can be obtained from the pHRI gripper, which can be

Bálint syndrome.

This chapter starts by reviewing the various interpretations of Bálint syndrome over time. We then develop a novel integrative view in which we propose that the various symptoms, historically reported and labeled by various authors, result from a core mislocalization deficit. This idea is in accordance with our previous proposal that the core deficit of Bálint syndrome is attentional (Pisella et al., 2009, 2013, 2017) since covert attention improves spatial resolution in visual periphery (Yeshurun and Carrasco, 1998); a deficit of covert attention would thus increase spatial uncertainty and th

Connecting brain and body: Transdiagnostic relevance of connective tissue variants to neuropsychiatric symptom expression.

The mind is embodied; thoughts and feelings interact with states of physiological arousal and physical integrity of the body. In this context, there is mounting evidence for an association between psychiatric presentations and the expression variant connective tissue, commonly recognised as joint hypermobility. Joint hypermobility is common, frequently under-recognised, significantly impacts quality of life, and can exist in isolation or as the hallmark of hypermobility spectrum disorders (encompassing joint hypermobility syndrome and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome). In this narrative revi

Presumptive fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy in a pot-bellied pig.

A 10-year-old spayed female golden retriever was referred with clinical signs of spinal cord disease. The dog had a 2-month history of progressive ambulatory tetraparesis, ataxia, and proprioceptive deficits that were confirmed on clinical examination. Magnetic resonance images revealed a compressive intradural-extramedullary mass at C4 to C5. A cervical hemilaminectomy with marginal excision was completed. Initial histopathological assessment suggested metastatic carcinoma, but further immunohistochemical analysis and lack of a primary tumor on CT imaging led to a revised diagnosis of a grade

Guillain-Barré syndrome as only manifestation of COVID-19 infection.

Post-infectious/immune mediated effects of COVID-19 infection include descriptions of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in patients usually with respiratory failure and after 1-2 weeks from the onset of viral illness. Asymptomatic cases for COVID-19 infection were rarely described. Herein, we studied a 62-year-old patient with progressive weakness of lower extremities, rapidly evolving to a severe, flaccid tetraplegia and dysphagia. Neurological symptoms weren't preceded by fever or pulmonary symptoms. Because of laboratory test abnormalities (thrombocytopenia, lymphocytopenia, high inflammation i

Enhancing functional abilities and cognitive integration of the lower limb prosthesis.

Lower limb amputation (LLA) destroys the sensory communication between the brain and the external world during standing and walking. Current prostheses do not restore sensory feedback to amputees, who, relying on very limited haptic information from the stump-socket interaction, are forced to deal with serious issues: the risk of falls, decreased mobility, prosthesis being perceived as an external object (low embodiment), and increased cognitive burden. Poor mobility is one of the causes of eventual device abandonment. Restoring sensory feedback from the missing leg of above-knee (transfemoral

Dental occlusion and body balance: A question of environmental constraints?

BACKGROUND: In the past few years, growing interest was given to the relationship between the dental occlusion and the body balance. While most research focused on this relationship at static conditions, it is evident that the contribution of the sensory information for balance control is different depending on the environmental constraints. RESEARCH QUESTION: The aim of the present paper was to elucidate whether the stomatognathic system (SS) contributes differently on body balance regulation according to the presence of external disturbances. METHODS: Literature regarding the different sou
