The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is important for processing different types of information, including sensory inputs. In the present study on anaesthetised rats, we recorded in vivo sensory responses of the ACC to peripheral electrical shocks. Peripheral electrical stimulation at high intensities sufficient to activate nociceptive sensory fibres elicited EPSPs within the ACC. Digit amputation caused long-lasting potentiation of ACC responses to peripheral electrical stimulation. Evoked field EPSPs remained enhanced for at least 120 min after the amputation. Because electrical shocks were d

BACKGROUND: Posterior cerebral arteries (PCAs) supply the ventrolateral thalamic sensory nuclei and white matter sensory tracts to the somatosensory parietal cortex. Patients with PCA territory strokes often have visual, memory, cognitive, and sensory signs. Clinicoanatomic correlation of visual, cognitive, and memory functions are well defined but, to our knowledge, no systematic study has analyzed the anatomy of sensory abnormalities.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency and anatomic correlation of sensory symptoms and signs in patients with PCA territory infarction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Si

This study frames anomalous functional brain organization in schizophrenia (SCZ) within an evolutionary model of brain development, the dual trends theory (DTT). The DTT argues that neural architecture develops along 2 separate pathways: the dorsal archicortical trend and the ventral paleocortical trend. The DTT dovetails with visual system organization, which is also composed of 2 independent pathways: a dorsal stream dedicated to visuomotor action and a ventral stream dedicated to perceptual processing. The present study examined the integrity of these pathways using a size-contrast visual i

Neonatal hypoxic ischemia (HI) occurs owing to reduced cerebral oxygen levels and perfusion during the perinatal period. Brain injury after … mistry (n = 6 per group) revealed increased fractional anisotropy and myelin density in the primary somatosensory cortex of the trained-HI group. We further evaluated the effect of myelination promotion on rotarod performance by administering clemastine, a myelination-promoting drug, via daily intraperitoneal injections. Clemastine did not enhance motor improvement in …

BACKGROUND: This study aims to identify how the large-scale brain dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) differs between mood states in bipolar disorder (BD). The authors analyzed dFC in subjects with BD in depressed and euthymic states using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) data, and compared these states to healthy controls (HCs).
METHOD: 20 subjects with BD in a depressive episode, 23 euthymic BD subjects, and 31 matched HCs underwent rsfMRI scans. Using an existing parcellation of the whole brain, we measured dFC between brain regions and identified the differen

Cortical interneurons expressing vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) are sparsely distributed throughout the neocortex, constituting only 0.5% of its neuronal population. The co-expression of VIP and ChAT suggests that these VIP/ChAT interneurons (VChIs) can release both γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and acetylcholine (ACh). In vitro physiological studies quantified the response properties and local connectivity patterns of the VChIs; however, the function of VChIs has not been explored in vivo. To study the role of VChIs in cortical network dynamics and t

Phantom limb pain is a restricting condition for a substantial number of amputees with quite different characteristics of pain. Here, we report on a forearm amputee with constant phantom pain in the hand, in whom we could regularly elicit the rare phenomenon of referred cramping phantom pain by touching the face. To clarify the underlying mechanisms, we followed the cramp during the course of an axillary blockade of the brachial plexus. During the blockade, both phantom pain and the referred cramp were abolished, while a referred sensation of "being touched at the phantom" persisted. Furthermo

OBJECTIVE: Previous electrophysiological and psychophysical tests have suggested that somatosensory integration is abnormal in dystonia. Here, we hypothesised that this abnormality could relate to a more general deficit in pre-attentive error/deviant detection in patients with dystonia. We therefore tested patients with dystonia and healthy subjects using a mismatch negativity paradigm (MMN), where evoked potentials generated in response to a standard repeated stimulus are subtracted from the responses to a rare "odd ball" stimulus.
METHODS: We assessed MMN for somatosensory and auditory stim

The core feature of separation anxiety is excessive distress when faced with actual or perceived separation from people to whom the individual has a strong emotional attachment. So far little is known about the neurobiological underpinnings of separation anxiety. Therefore, we investigated functional (amygdala responsiveness and functional connectivity during threat-related emotion processing) and structural (grey matter volume) imaging markers associated with separation anxiety as measured with the Relationship Scale Questionnaire in a large sample of healthy adults from the Münster Neuroimag

OBJECTIVE: To use a combination of magnetic resonance diffusion-tensor imaging (MR-DTI) and MR imaging of voxel-based morphometry (MR-VBM) in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) to determine microstructural and volume changes in the central neuronal networks involved in the sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational characteristics of pain, anxiety, memory, and regulation of the stress response.
METHODS: Thirty female patients with FMS and 30 healthy female control subjects were studied. Predefined areas of the brain were measured for volume of gray matter by MR-VBM and for diffu

The suppressive effect of the halogenated inhalation anesthesia on cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (cSSEPs) has been well documented. Less studied and appreciated is the effect of nitrous oxide often with a narcotic as an alternative to a potent agent for spinal cord monitoring. This study sought to define more clearly the influence of nitrous oxide on cSSEPs elicited to posterior tibial nerve stimulation. A secondary purpose was to demonstrate the advantage of a total intravenous propofol anesthesia in facilitating uncompromised large-amplitude cSSEPs. Fifty adult patients undergoing

Somatosensory cortical evoked potentials (SCEPs) monitoring in neuromuscular scoliosis surgery was evaluated in a large consecutive series of spinal reconstructions to define its role in the detection and prevention of spinal cord injury; 141 procedures in 101 patients were evaluated. In 28% a reliable tracing could not be obtained. Two postoperative neurologic deficits were missed by SCEP monitoring. Diagnosis (Duchenne muscular dystrophy and polio) was the only significant factor found to correlate with a reliable tracing. The use of sublaminar wires was associated with a higher rate of chan

A 55-year-old man with a 4 1/2-year history of paroxysmal bouts of involuntary large-amplitude flexion jerks of the trunk and a 1-year history of persistent rhythmic small-amplitude movements of the anterior abdominal wall is described. Clinical and electrophysiological evidence suggested that the paroxysmal myoclonus arose in propriospinal systems intrinsic to the spinal cord.

Short-latency somatosensory (SSEPs), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and event-related potentials (ERPs) were studied in 7 patients with Binswanger's encephalopathy, 12 patients with Alzheimer's disease and 17 normal subjects. Patients with Binswanger's encephalopathy showed significantly prolonged central conduction time (CCT) and P300 latency, and prolonged tendency of I-V IPL compared to those of normal subjects. In particular, CCT showed significant prolongation compared to that of patients with Alzheimer's disease. In patients with Alzheimer's disease, I-V IPL and P300 latenc

In awake mobile rabbits, with electrodes implanted in the medial lemniscus, midbrain tegmental reticular nucleus, and pyramidal tract, combined stimulation of two brain of two brain structures resulted in elaboration of conditional connections in sensorimotor cortex neuronal populations. The main criterion of the conditioning was the appearance of changes in the neuronal activity on omission of the second stimulus. These changes represented a complex of electrical events, some of which were similar to and others different from the evoked responses to the second stimulus. Application of atropin

This report presented to the Société de Neurochirurgie de Langue Française is based on 34 years of unique practice in neurosurgical management of pain; during that long period the author and his associates have collected an unusually large experience in almost every field of neurosurgical management of pain; they have improved or fully devised several new techniques which allow them to ground an appreciation of the procedures still worthy to be used in various pain syndromes. The first part of the report deals with "Cybernetics of pain". This rather long chapter is based both on classical data

A central goal in translational stroke research is to identify neurophysiological biomarkers that index injury severity and provide information about subsequent functional outcome. Cortical slow oscillations (SOs; 0.1-1.0 Hz) are suppressed after ischemic stroke and recover over the following days to weeks. Whether SO recovery actually tracks behavioral recovery, and whether pre-stroke network organization relates to outcome, has not been tested within individual animals. Using longitudinal wide-field calcium imaging in Thy1-GCaMP6f mice (n = 25), we tracked ipsilateral and contralateral SO po

Basal forebrain cholinergic (BFC) deficits induced by amyloid beta (Aβ) are a well-established feature of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and are … 42. The Aβ1–42 did not reduce the density of acetylcholine esterase-positive BFC projections in the somatosensory cortex of aged mice, as had been observed in young mice. Together, these findings suggest that selective activators of non-classical intracellular estrogen signaling when administered to older adults have the potential to reduce Aβ1–42-induced cholinergic …
