Patterns and average volume of alcohol use among women of childbearing age.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal alcohol use is a leading preventable cause of neurobehavioral and developmental abnormalities in children. This study examines the patterns and average volume of alcohol use among U.S. women of childbearing age in order to identify subgroups of high-risk women for selective intervention. METHODS: A sample of 188,290 women aged 18-44 years participated in the Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention (CDC)'s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey during the period of 2001-2003. Reported alcohol use patterns and average volume were examined for pregnant

Long-term epigenetic changes in offspring mice exposed to alcohol during gestation and lactation.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol exposure impairs brain development and leads to a range of behavioural and cognitive dysfunctions, termed as foetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Although different mechanisms have been proposed to participate in foetal alcohol spectrum disorders, the molecular insights of such effects are still uncertain. Using a mouse model of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, we have previously shown that maternal binge-like alcohol drinking causes persistent effects on motor, cognitive and emotional-related behaviours associated with neuroimmune dysfunctions. AIMS: In this study, we soug

Couples living with and around alcohol abuse: A study of a farmworker community in the Cape Winelands, South Africa.

RATIONALE: Low-income Coloured Western Cape communities in South Africa display high rates of problematic drinking, especially binge-drinking over weekends. Alcohol abuse in these communities is linked to the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV), fetal alcohol syndrome and sexual violence against women. Few studies, however, have investigated the social contextual factors that perpetuate alcohol abuse in these communities. OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: Our study contributes to the need for social contextual knowledge need by providing an understanding of how committed couples, who lived and

A web-based intervention to reduce alcohol-exposed pregnancies in the community.

Despite warnings that drinking during pregnancy is unsafe, many women are still at risk for an alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP). This article describes the outcomes of a web-based, self-guided change intervention designed to lower the risk for AEPs in a community. A sample of 458 women, between the ages of 18 and 44 years and at risk for an AEP (i.e., any drinking in the past 30 days and not using reliable contraception), participated in the study. A total of 58% of the women enrolled in the self-guided change intervention were no longer at risk for an AEP at the 4-month follow-up. Sublevel ana

Effects of maternal alcohol consumption during breastfeeding on motor and cerebellar Purkinje cells behavior in mice.

Purkinje cells (PCs) are the sole output from the cerebellar cortex. Their electrophysiological behavior may serve as indicator of chronic ethanol effects on the cerebellum. Here, we studied the effects of ethanol consumption through breastfeeding on motor behavior, histology and PCs electrophysiology. Mice with different maternal drinking regimen (ethanol, E or sucrose, S) during prenatal (E/and S/) and postnatal period (/E and/S) were compared. Motor performance in the runway and rotarod tests was significantly worse in mice exposed to ethanol prenatally (E/E and E/S) than in mice exposed to

Pre-pregnancy drinking: how drink size affects risk assessment.

AIMS: We considered the role of drink size in determining average daily consumption among groups at risk for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. DESIGN: In-person hour-long interviews gathered cross-sectional retrospective data about drinking before an index pregnancy. SETTING: Subjects were recruited at public clinics in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. To reach those not necessarily seeking prenatal care, community outreach in the same urban areas was undertaken. PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred and twenty-one pregnant women were interviewed: 102 Native Americans, 185 African Americans, and 34

Has awareness of the alcohol warning label reached its upper limit?

Has awareness of the alcoholic beverage warning label reached its maximum? This study tracks changes in the level of awareness among a sample of 7334 inner-city African-American gravidas seeking prenatal care between May 1989 and June 1993. Previously, we found that a significant increase in awareness of the warning label occurred in March 1990. In the current analysis over a 50-month period, the level of awareness continued to increase through December 1992 and then leveled off, suggesting a negatively accelerated growth function. The logistic function fitted to the awareness curve predicts t

Endothelial NMDA Receptor Involvement in Retinal Neurovascular Damage Following Prenatal Alcohol Exposure in a Mouse Model.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) induces neurodevelopmental damage leading to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) by altering both brain and ocular development. Recent data showed that PAE impairs brain cortical and retinal vasculature leading to defective positioning of interneurons. In the retina, PAE disturbs vascular development and the association of calretinin neurons with vessels. The NMDA receptor (NMDAR) is a major target of alcohol in the brain, and both ligand binding to NMDARs and the expression of NMDAR subunits are altered in FASD. Given that NMDAR is also expressed in endothe…

The effects of moderate prenatal alcohol exposure on performance in object and spatial discrimination tasks by adult male rats.

Exposure to alcohol during pregnancy produces Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which in its most severe form is characterized by physical dysmorphology and neurobehavioral alterations. Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (mPAE) is known to produce deficits in discrimination of spatial locations in adulthood. However, the impact of mPAE on higher-order sensory representations, such as discrimination of perceptually similar stimuli, is currently unknown. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that mPAE would disrupt performance on hippocampal-sensitive tasks that require discrimination b…

Prenatal alcohol exposure prevalence as measured by direct ethanol metabolites in meconium in a Native American tribe of the southwest.

BACKGROUND: Although fetal alcohol spectrum disorders represent a significant public health problem, Native Americans are underrepresented in population and targeted screening programs. Prior reports suggest that Native American tribal communities may have a higher prevalence of alcohol use during pregnancy; however, systematic examination using ethanol biomarkers is lacking. METHODS: This study utilized data collected through the Navajo Birth Cohort Study (NBCS)-a birth cohort study of a Southwestern tribal community. Prevalence of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) was assessed by a battery of…

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Leads to Enhanced Serine 9 Phosphorylation of Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3β (GSK-3β) in the Hippocampal Dentate Gyrus of Adult Mouse.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to evaluate the expression and serine 9 phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK-3β) within the adult hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) in a preclinical mouse model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. GSK-3β is a multifunctional kinase that modulates many hippocampal processes affected by gestational alcohol, including synaptic plasticity and adult neurogenesis. GSK-3β is a constitutively active kinase that is negatively regulated by phosphorylation at the serine 9 residue. METHODS: We utilized a well-characterized limited access "drinking-in-the-d…

Hazardous alcohol users during pregnancy: psychiatric health and personality traits.

BACKGROUND: We examined alcohol use disorders, psychiatric symptoms and personality traits in women reporting alcohol use during pregnancy. METHODS: In a pilot cohort (n=139), subjects were screened for alcohol use disorders, and assessed for psychopathology, personality traits, and alcohol use during the first trimester. Those reporting consumption exceeding a conservative threshold for harmful use were offered a diagnostic psychiatric interview. The main findings of the pilot study were replicated using a large sample of women in the third trimester (n=715), who were screened for alcohol us

Evaluating the role of strengths and protective factors for youth with FASD and criminal legal system involvement: a scoping review.

Youth with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) are overrepresented in the criminal legal system (CLS). There is greater recognition among scholars, policymakers, and professionals of the importance of strengths-based approaches for this population. The current scoping review (preregistered on the Center for Open Science; DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/6WAZE) aimed to determine what strengths and protective factors have been investigated for youth with FASD in the CLS, and how these have been identified, defined, and measured. Results identified an emerging body of literature of 16 peer reviewed artic

Investigation of the Dynamic Gait Index in children: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: We investigated the feasibility and construct validity of the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) in children and explored interrater and test-retest reliability. METHODS: DGI performance of 10 children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), aged 8 to 15 years, was compared with that of 10 age- and sex-matched children with typical development (TD). Interrater reliability was evaluated for 16 children (10 TD, 6 FASD); 11 children returned for a retest (5 TD, 6 FASD). RESULTS: The DGI is simple for raters to learn and easy to administer in children. A Mann-Whitney U test identified a sign
