Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament is linked to heterotopic ossification of the ankle/foot tendons.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic osteogenesis has been speculated to be involved in the pathogenesis of ossification of the posterior longitudinal lig … graphs. Achilles and plantar tendon ossification were classified as grades 0-4, and the presence of osteophytes at five sites in the foot/ankle joint was assessed by radiography. Factors associated with the presence and severity of each ossification were evaluated by multivariable logistic regression and linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence o …

Imaging characteristics of hip joint microinstability: a case-control study of hip arthroscopy patients.

OBJECTIVES: Hip microinstability is a clinical entity increasingly recognized and treated but challenging to diagnose with a lack of objecti … n MR (OR 2.45 and 0.93, respectively) and the absence of positive ischial spine sign and absence of osteophytes on radiographs (OR 0.47 and 0.28, respectively). Increased acetabular anteversion and absence of cam lesions were more likely in the microinstability group (p = 0.02 and 0.04, respectively), but not independent predictors. Labral tears, chondral lo …

Bow hunter's syndrome due to an anomalous right vertebral artery origin and contralateral absence: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Bow Hunter's syndrome (BHS), also known as rotational vertebral artery occlusion (RVAO), is a rare condition characterized by dynamic vertebrobasilar insufficiency due to position-dependent occlusion of the vertebral artery (VA). In the existing literature, most cases of BHS are attributed to osteophytic compression originating from the occipital condyle or within the transverse foramen, often accompanied by anatomical abnormalities of the VA. However, cases presenting solely with VA anomalies in the absence of any cervical vertebral structural abnormality are rare. This case repor

Pentraxin 3 deficiency ameliorates the severity of osteoarthritis and alleviates inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is one of the most common degenerative joint disorders, characterized by articular cartilage breakdown, synovitis, osteophytes generation and subchondral bone sclerosis. Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is a long pentraxin protein, secreted by immune cells, and PTX3 is identified to play a critical role in inflammation and macrophage polarization. However, the underlying mechanism of PTX3 in osteoarthritis under the circumstance of Ptx3-knockout (KO) mice model is still unknown. METHODS: Murine destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) OA model was created in Ptx3-knockout (KO…

Osteoarthritis of the knee - biochemical aspect of applied therapies: a review.

The most prevalent form of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, which is characterized by a degeneration of articular cartilage resulting in the development of osteophytes, or bone spurs. Main goals of OA treatment are to reduce pain, slow the disease progression, and improve joint function and the quality of life. The purpose of this study was to verify all the therapies recommended by the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) from the biochemical point of view. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) inhibit the synthesi…

Cross-sectional and longitudinal assessment of subchondral cysts in temporomandibular joints: Clinical and MRI study with a mean follow-up of 66 months.

PURPOSE: This observational study aimed to elucidate the pathophysiology of subchondral cysts (SC) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and examine the results of conservative therapy administered to patients with SCs in the TMJ. METHODS: The study included 41 patients with SCs, extracted from 684 consecutive patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The anatomical features of SCs and positional abnormalities of the articular disc were initially evaluated using MRI. A second MRI examination was performed for 28/41 patients at 40-107 months (mean, 66 months) after the first MRI.

A Novel Anterior Cervical X-Shape-Corpectomy and Fusion for Cervical Spinal Stenosis at C4-C6 Level: A Technical Note.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) is employed in patients with localized cervical spinal stenosis (CSS). However, there are some disadvantages such as subsidence of the titanium mesh cage, slow fusion rates, breakage of the plate and screws, and donor-site complications. For patients with small posterior osteophytes, ossified or hypertrophy of the posterior longitudinal ligaments or ligamentum flavum, the range of decompression from the classic anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) cannot meet the clinical requirements. However, employing ACCF is controversial.…

Concomitant injury of the annular ligament in fractures of the coronoid process and the supinator crest.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the coronoid process or the supinator crest, as well as arthroscopic resection of osteophytes around the coronoid process, can endanger the attachment of the annular ligament (AL) to the proximal ulna. The purpose of this study was to investigate the corresponding insertional areas of the AL within this context. METHODS: In 30 embalmed human cadaveric elbow specimens, the insertional area of the AL at the anterior and posterior margin of the sigmoid notch was characterized. The distances and relations of the AL insertion anteriorly to the coronoid surface, the coronoi…

RESULTS: The CT scans of 244 SCJs (53%) in 137 patients (59%) showed at least 1 sign of osteoarthritis. No patients younger than 35 years had any features of osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation and synovial hyperplasia, which usually aff … tive bone changes was found in 90% of the subjects, the most prevalent being flattening (78.7%) and osteophytes (39.3%). The association test suggested a greater tendency to develop degenerative changes in asymptomatic individuals (p = 0.01). Posterior atlantoaxial 'facetal' instability associated with cervical spondylotic disease.

AIM: The association of single or multiple level cervical spondylotic disease with atlantoaxial instability is assessed. The implications of identifying and treating atlantoaxial instability in such an association are highlighted. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analysis is based on an experience with 11 patients treated during the period June 2013-June 2014. All patients had single or multilevel cervical spondylotic disease. The spinal canal compromise and evidence of cord compression was evident on imaging in the cervical subaxial spine and was related to disc bulges and osteophytic bars. There

Black joint and synovia: Histopathological evaluation of degenerative joint disease due to Ochronosis.

INTRODUCTION: Ochronotic arthropathy is a rapidly progressive and disabling arthropathy predominantly encountered after the fifth decade of life, caused by homogentisate1,2 dioxygenase enzyme deficiency. As it is rare disease, the literature on histological findings is fragmented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively re-evaluated histopathological findings in resection and/or curettage materials (5 hip joint, 4 knee joint, one hip joint synovium, one intervertebral disk and one paravertebral disk tissue) of seven ochronosis cases diagnosed between 1995 and 2013 in a single center.
