Control networks and hemispheric asymmetries in parietal cortex during attentional orienting in different spatial reference frames.

Neuropsychological research has consistently demonstrated that spatial attention can be anchored in one of several coordinate systems, including those defined with respect to an observer (viewer-centered), to the gravitational vector (environment-centered), or to individual objects (object-centered). In the present study, we used hemodynamic correlates of brain function to investigate the neural systems that mediate attentional control in two competing reference frames. Healthy volunteers were cued to locations defined in either viewer-centered or object-centered space to discriminate the shap

Infrared Photography: A Novel Diagnostic Approach for Ocular Surface Abnormalities Due to Vitamin A Deficiency.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains a significant cause of preventable blindness worldwide, with ocular surface changes representing early manifestations that require prompt recognition and treatment. Conventional examination methods are capable of detecting advanced changes; however, subtle conjunctival abnormalities may be overlooked, potentially delaying the administration of appropriate interventions. We herein present the case of a 5-year-old Japanese boy with severe VAD due to selective eating patterns. This case demonstrates the utility of infrared photography as a novel diagnostic appro

Understanding Cardiology Practitioners' Interpretations of Electrocardiograms: An Eye-Tracking Study.

BACKGROUND: Visual expertise refers to advanced visual skills demonstrated when performing domain-specific visual tasks. Prior research has emphasized the fact that medical experts rely on such perceptual pattern-recognition skills when interpreting medical images, particularly in the field of electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation. Analyzing and modeling cardiology practitioners' visual behavior across different levels of expertise in the health care sector is crucial. Namely, understanding such acquirable visual skills may help train less experienced clinicians to interpret ECGs accurately.

Relationship between resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging and memory function in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECT: To study memory impairment mechanisms of the medial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) by analyzing the functional connectivity (FC) through resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). METHODS: Rs-fMRI data were acquired from 13 patients with left MTLE and 11 patients with right MTLE. Another 13 healthy volunteers were selected as controls. The altered FC pattern between the unilateral hippocampus and other regions of the brain in MTLE patients was compared to that of the normal control group. Then the correlation between the strength of FC and the clinical memory scale

Lung sounds classification using convolutional neural networks.

Lung sounds convey relevant information related to pulmonary disorders, and to evaluate patients with pulmonary conditions, the physician or the doctor uses the traditional auscultation technique. However, this technique suffers from limitations. For example, if the physician is not well trained, this may lead to a wrong diagnosis. Moreover, lung sounds are non-stationary, complicating the tasks of analysis, recognition, and distinction. This is why developing automatic recognition systems can help to deal with these limitations. In this paper, we compare three machine learning approaches for

Clarifying homologies in the mammalian cerebral cortex: the case of the third visual area (V3).

1. Experiments in mammalian models are the main source of information on the neural architecture underlying human visual perception, establishing scientific boundaries for the interpretation of experiments using non-invasive techniques in humans and for the realistic modelling of visual processes. Thus, it is important to define the homology between visual areas in different species. 2. To date, relatively few visual areas can be defined with certainty across mammalian Orders. Here, we review the evidence pointing to the fact that the third visual area (V3; or area 19) is a crucial node of a s

The Predictive Value of Amplitude-Integrated Electroencephalography in Preterm Infants for IQ and Other Neuropsychological Outcomes at Early School Age.

BACKGROUND: Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) is used increasingly in neonatal intensive care and seems helpful in predicting outcomes at the age of 2 years. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether early aEEG patterns in preterm infants are equally useful in predicting outcomes at early school age. METHODS: We recorded aEEG in 41 preterms (gestational age 26.0-32.9 weeks) at a median postnatal age of 9.7 h (IQR 7.0-25.3) and in 43 preterms on median day 8 (IQR 7-9). We assessed aEEG by pattern recognition and calculated the means of the aEEG amplitude centiles. At a median of 7.39

Epidural venous stasis in spinal stenosis. CT appearance.

Computed tomography permits reliable demonstration of the spinal canal and its contents. Measurements of the sagittal diameter of the bony canal do not take into consideration size, shape and state of intraspinal soft tissue structures, i.e. the thecal sac and its own contents, epidural fat and blood circulation pattern. Three particularly illustrative cases were selected in which obvious epidural venous engorgement was visualized in association with spinal stenosis. The authors think that epidural venous stasis occurring in segmental spinal stenosis is a CT sign of clinically significant narr

Basic Ventilator Graphics in the NICU: A Practical Overview.

Mechanical ventilation remains a cornerstone of neonatal intensive care, particularly for premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome. While blood gas analysis and radiographs provide clinical information, ventilator pulmonary graphics offer continuous, noninvasive insights into respiratory mechanics. Modern ventilators generate real-time data that help clinicians assess lung compliance, airway resistance, and patient-ventilator synchrony. Pressure-volume and flow-volume loops provide visual cues for detecting changes in compliance, air leaks, secretions, overdistension, air trapping,

GlyConnect: Glycoproteomics Goes Visual, Interactive, and Analytical.

Knowledge of glycoproteins, their site-specific glycosylation patterns, and the glycan structures that they present to their recognition partners in health and disease is gradually being built on using a range of experimental approaches. The data from these analyses are increasingly being standardized and presented in various sources, from supplemental tables in publications to localized servers in investigator laboratories. Bioinformatics tools are now needed to collect these data and enable the user to search, display, and connect glycomics and glycoproteomics to other sources of related pro

Ciliary body melanoma: a special challenge.

Although there is little doubt that the delayed recognition of ciliary body melanoma has a bearing on patient management and ultimate survival, the most compelling issues that face the clinician treating this neoplasm relate to the metastatic patterns and mechanisms of the disease. Several aspects of diagnosis and management of this tumour provide a unique challenge to the clinician. Ciliary body melanoma can remain clinically inapparent to the patient as well as to the clinician during its formative period. In management, tumour characteristics, including anterior and posterior margins, are m

Structural Health Monitoring of Gas Networks via Acoustic Emission and Fuzzy Pattern Recognition.

Structural durability and reliability are fundamental imperatives for the safe operation of engineering infrastructure, profoundly influencing both lifecycle asset economics and socio-environmental safety. A critical component of structural integrity engineering involves the precise spatial localization of defects, the continuous monitoring of their propagation kinetics, and the high-fidelity quantification of their impact on global structural health. To achieve this, advanced diagnostic methodologies are required to detect the earliest indicators of material degradation and track its evolutio

Replicability of representational similarity and its role in successful memory retrieval.

Studies of hippocampal pattern similarity during event encoding and its relationship to subsequent memory retrieval have revealed inconsistent results. Our laboratory recently found evidence that differences in cognitive processing during encoding can modulate the relationship between hippocampal pattern similarity and recognition success. This finding is consistent with the theoretical proposal that hippocampal representations have a dynamic relationship to memory retrieval in which cognitive goals are influential. However, there have been few attempts to replicate representational similarity

Achieving more human brain-like vision via human EEG representational alignment.

Despite advancements in artificial intelligence, object recognition models still lag behind in emulating visual information processing in human brains. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of using neural data to mimic brain processing; however, these often rely on invasive neural recordings from non-human subjects, leaving a critical gap in understanding human visual perception. Addressing this gap, we present, 'Re(presentational)Al(ignment)net', a vision model aligned with human brain activity based on non-invasive EEG, demonstrating a significantly higher similarity to human brain

Left Frontal Hub Connectivity during Memory Performance Supports Reserve in Aging and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Reserve in aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is defined as maintaining cognition at a relatively high level in the presence of neurodegeneration, an ability often associated with higher education among other life factors. Recent evidence suggests that higher resting-state functional connectivity within the frontoparietal control network, specifically the left frontal cortex (LFC) hub, contributes to higher reserve. Following up these previous resting-state fMRI findings, we probed memory-task related functional connectivity of the LFC hub as a neural substrate of reserve. In elderly controls

Clinical application of a color map pattern on shear-wave elastography for invasive breast cancer.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to classify the color map pattern on shear-wave elastography (SWE) and to determine its association with clinicopathological factors for clinical application in invasive breast cancer. METHODS: From June to December 2014, 103 invasive breast cancers were imaged by B-mode ultrasonography (US) and SWE just before surgery. The color map pattern identified on the SWE could be classified into three main categories: type 1 (diffuse pattern), increased stiffness in the surrounding stroma and the interior lesion itself; type 2 (lateral pattern), marked peri-tumoral

Neural response during explicit and implicit face processing varies developmentally in bipolar disorder.

Both children and adults with bipolar disorder (BD) exhibit face emotion labeling deficits and neural circuitry dysfunction in response to emotional faces. However, few studies have compared these groups directly to distinguish effects of age and diagnosis. Such studies are important to begin to elucidate the developmental trajectory of BD and facilitate its diagnosis, prevention and treatment. This functional magnetic resonance imaging study compares 41 individuals with BD (19 children; 22 adults) and 44 age-matched healthy individuals (25 children; 19 adults) when making explicit or implicit

Colour or shape: examination of neural processes underlying mental flexibility in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that stems from exposure to one or more traumatic events. While PTSD is thought to result from a dysregulation of emotional neurocircuitry, neurocognitive difficulties are frequently reported. Mental flexibility is a core executive function that involves the ability to shift and adapt to new information. It is essential for appropriate social-cognitive behaviours. Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a neuroimaging modality with high spatial and temporal resolution, has been used to track the progression of brain activation during tasks of men

Impaired visuospatial transformation but intact sequence processing in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether visuospatial deficits in Parkinson disease (PD) can be explained by a domain-general, nonspatial impairment in the sequencing or serial chaining of mental operations. BACKGROUND: PD has been shown to be associated with impaired visuospatial processing, but the mechanisms of this impairment remain unclear. METHODS: Thirteen patients with PD and 20 age-matched, neurologically normal controls performed a visuospatial grid navigation task requiring sequential spatial transformations. The participants also performed a control task of serial number subtraction design
