Effect of cooking methods on the nutritional quality of selected vegetables at Sylhet City.

The study was carried out to analyze the impacts of boiling, steaming, and microwave cooking on the physicochemical properties, the content of bioactive compounds, and boiling effect on mineral and heavy metal content of six widely consumed vegetables in Bangladesh's north-eastern region. In comparison to raw, boiled, and microwave-cooked vegetables, those that are steam-cooked retain a higher percentage of β-carotene with the exception of carrots. Boiling vegetables led to the most substantial reduction in ascorbic acid content (from 9.83 % to 70.88 %), with spinach experiencing the greatest

BmKK2, a thermostable Kv1.3 blocker from Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK) scorpion, inhibits the activation of macrophages via Kv1.3-NF-κB- NLRP3 axis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Inflammation plays pivotal role in the development of chronic diseases. Reducing chronic inflammation is an important strategy for preventing and managing many chronic diseases. In traditional Chinese medicine, the processed Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK) scorpion (also called "Quanxie") has been used to treat chronic inflammatory arthritis and spondylitis for hundreds of years suggests that "Quanxie" could potentially be utilized as a resource for identifying new anti-inflammatory compounds. However, the molecular basis and the underline mechanism for the anti-i

Ameliorative effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles against potassium bromate-mediated toxicity in Swiss albino rats.

Potassium bromate (PB) is a commonly used food additive, a prominent water disinfection by-product, and a class IIB carcinogen. It exerts a various degree of toxicity depending on its dose and exposure duration consumed with food and water in the living organisms. The present investigation aims to demonstrate the protective efficacy of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) derived from Ochradenus arabicus (OA) leaf extract by green technology in PB-challenged Swiss albino rats. The rodents were randomly distributed, under the lab-standardized treatment strategy, into the following six treatment g

Preventive action of benztropine on platinum-induced peripheral neuropathies and tumor growth.

The endogenous cholinergic system plays a key role in neuronal cells, by suppressing neurite outgrowth and myelination and, in some cancer cells, favoring tumor growth. Platinum compounds are widely used as part of first line conventional cancer chemotherapy; their efficacy is however limited by peripheral neuropathy as a major side-effect. In a multiple sclerosis mouse model, benztropine, that also acts as an anti-histamine and a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor, induced the differentiation of oligodendrocytes through M1 and M3 muscarinic receptors and enhanced re-myelination. We have evaluated w

Highly sensitive analysis of four hemeproteins by dynamically-coated capillary electrophoresis with chemiluminescence detector using an off-column coaxial flow interface.

Dynamic coating of the surface in capillary electrophoresis with chemiluminescence detection (CE-CL) using an off-column coaxial flow interface for the determination of four hemeproteins was developed. This method is based on the luminol-hydrogen peroxide reaction catalyzed by metalloproteins in alkaline medium. The experimental setup of the CE-CL system with the proposed off-column coaxial interface was evaluated by separation and detection of dopamine and catechol based on inhibition of the luminol-potassium ferricyanide reaction. Highly efficient separation of the two model compounds with s

Conditional KCa3.1-transgene induction in murine skin produces pruritic eczematous dermatitis with severe epidermal hyperplasia and hyperkeratosis.

Ion channels have recently attracted attention as potential mediators of skin disease. Here, we explored the consequences of genetically encoded induction of the cell volume-regulating Ca2+-activated KCa3.1 channel (Kcnn4) for murine epidermal homeostasis. Doxycycline-treated mice harboring the KCa3.1+-transgene under the control of the reverse tetracycline-sensitive transactivator (rtTA) showed 800-fold channel overexpression above basal levels in the skin and solid KCa3.1-currents in keratinocytes. This overexpression resulted in epidermal spongiosis, progressive epidermal hyperplasia and hy

Genetic causes and treatment of neonatal diabetes and early childhood diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose associated with single gene mutations are less rare than previously thought and may account for more than 6% of patients attending a pediatric diabetes clinic. The number of loci involved in monogenic diabetes exceed 25, and appropriate genetic diagnosis is crucial to direct therapy, for genetic counseling and for prognosis of short- and long-term complications. Among patients with neonatal diabetes (i.e. with onset within first 6 months of life) and patients with Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY; an autosomal dominant form of diabetes),

Differential Contribution of Nerve-Derived Noradrenaline to High K+-Induced Contraction Depending on Type of Artery.

High K+-induced contraction of arterial smooth muscle is thought to be mediated by membrane depolarization and subsequent activation of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (VDCCs). In line with this, this study found that contraction induced by 80 mM K+ was almost abolished by nifedipine (1 µM), a VDCC inhibitor, in isolated rat aorta, and was markedly suppressed in the iliac artery. However, nifedipine (1 µM) only partially suppressed high K+-induced contraction in the tail artery. The contractions remaining in the arteries were further reduced by non-selective cation channel (NSCC) inhibitors, i

Therapy-Emergent Drug Resistance to Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors in HIV-1 Patients: A Subgroup Meta-Analysis of Clinical Trials.

BACKGROUND: Integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) are a novel class of anti-HIV agents that show high activity in inhibiting HIV-1 replication. Currently, licensed INSTIs include raltegravir (RAL), elvitegravir (EVG) and dolutegravir (DTG); these drugs have played a critical role in AIDS therapy, serving as additional weapons in the arsenal for treating patients infected with HIV-1. To date, long-term data regarding clinical experience with INSTI use and the emergence of resistance remain scarce. However, the literature is likely now sufficiently comprehensive to warrant a meta-analysi

Oxidative damage induced by chromium (VI) in rat erythrocytes: protective effect of selenium.

Excess chromium (Cr) exposure is associated with various pathological conditions including hematological dysfunction. The generation of oxidative stress is one of the plausible mechanisms behind Cr-induced cellular deteriorations. The efficacy of selenium (Se) to combat Cr-induced oxidative damage in the erythrocytes of adult rats was investigated in the current study. Female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups of six each: group I served as controls which received standard diet, group II received in drinking water K(2)Cr(2)O(7) alone (700 ppm), group III received both K(2)Cr(2)
