Reference range of bone age-based uterine volume in growing girls.

BACKGROUND: Uterine volume (UV) and bone age (BA) are important determinants for evaluating the pubertal status of growing girls. However, the correlation between these two parameters in growing children has not yet been fully investigated. METHODS: This retrospective observational study collected data from girls aged 1-14 years who were classified into precocious puberty (PP) and normal puberty (NP) for subgroup analysis. The demographic data, BA, and UV were thoroughly analyzed to elucidate their associations. RESULTS: A total of 542 girls were enrolled in the study from 2013 to 2022. The

Association between dietary behavior and puberty in girls.

INTRODUCTION: Over the decades the trends of early onset of puberty have been observed in children, particularly in girls. Research evidence has reported diet to be among the most important risk factors for puberty onset. This study evaluated the association between dietary behavior and puberty in girls. METHODS: We enrolled 201 girls with the main complaints of breast development as the cases at the Endocrine Department of Nanjing Children's Hospital. The cases were divided into breast development with central priming and breast development without central priming groups and were matched wit

Efficacy and Safety of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Agonist Treatment to Suppress Puberty in Gender Dysphoric Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Puberty suppression using gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHas) is recommended by current guidelines as the treatment of choice for gender dysphoric adolescents. Although GnRHas have long been used to treat precocious puberty, there are few data on the efficacy and safety in gender dysphoric adolescents. Therefore, the Endocrine Society guideline recommends frequent monitoring of gonadotropins, sex steroids, and renal and liver function. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of GnRHa treatment to suppress puberty in gender dysphoric adolescents. METHODS: Forty-nin

Sexual development of the fetus and pubertal child.

The disorders of sexual differentiation and maturation are a fascinating study in physiology. The interaction of chromosomes, regulation of transcription, as well as hormone production and action are far from being completely understood. Aberrations anywhere along these systems can cause abnormal sexual development. It is important for the practicing obstetrician and gynecologist to be cognizant of these conditions and include them in differential diagnoses so that removal of dysgenetic gonads is not delayed, inappropriate sexual assignment is not announced, and the treatment of TS or other se

[Endocrine diagnosis in puberty--pathophysiologic bases].

Puberty is characterized by activation of the maturing gonads and by the thus started increased secretion of sexual steroids. Consequences are the appearance of secondary signs of puberty sensu strictori, i. e. the development of breasts in girls, the increase of testicle volume in boys, often followed by growing pubic hair, axillary hair, menarche or laryngeal growth (puberty vocal change) respectively. The most important accompanying symptom is the spurt of growth starting around 12 to 18 months after the onset of the development of the secondary pubertal signs. From the time sequence of the

Methylation status of hypothalamic Mkrn3 promoter across puberty.

Makorin RING finger protein 3 (MKRN3) is an important factor located on chromosome 15 in the imprinting region associated with Prader-Willi syndrome. Imprinted MKRN3 is expressed in hypothalamic regions essential for the onset of puberty and mutations in the gene have been found in patients with central precocious puberty. The pubertal process is largely controlled by epigenetic mechanisms that include, among other things, DNA methylation at CpG dinucleotides of puberty-related genes. In the present study, we investigated the methylation status of the Mkrn3 promoter in the hypothalamus of the

Exogenous Melatonin Regulates Puberty and the Hypothalamic GnRH-GnIH System in Female Mice.

In recent years, the age of children entering puberty is getting lower and the incidence of central precocious puberty is increasing. It is known that melatonin plays an increasingly important role in regulating animal reproduction, but the specific role and mechanism of melatonin in regulating the initiation of puberty remain unclear. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of subcutaneous melatonin injection on pubertal development in female mice and its mechanism of action. Female mice that were 22 days old received 1 mg/kg doses of melatonin subcutaneously every day

Management of growth hormone deficiency through puberty.

As a model of the growth hormone (GH) dependence of growth in prepuberty and puberty, the growth of 182 children (93 boys, 89 girls) who survived in first remission for treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was examined. Chemotherapy regimens, including intrathecal methotrexate, were similar in all patients, but CNS treatment differed, in that one group received 2400 cGy cranial irradiation, while the other received 1800 cGy. There was a significant decrease in height SDS during prepuberty, which was equivalent in both sexes, whereas there was a much greater decrease in pubertal growth in

Assessment of rapidly advancing bone age during puberty on elbow radiographs using a deep neural network model.

OBJECTIVES: Bone age is considered an indicator for the diagnosis of precocious or delayed puberty and a predictor of adult height. We aimed to evaluate the performance of a deep neural network model in assessing rapidly advancing bone age during puberty using elbow radiographs. METHODS: In all, 4437 anteroposterior and lateral pairs of elbow radiographs were obtained from pubertal individuals from two institutions to implement and validate a deep neural network model. The reference standard bone age was established by five trained researchers using the Sauvegrain method, a scoring system bas

Low Helicobacter pylori eradication rates with 4- and 7-day regimens in an Iranian population.

The kisspeptin receptor (KISS1R) is a G protein-coupled receptor recognized as the trigger of puberty and a regulator of reproductive competence in adulthood (1,2,3). Inactivating mutations in KISS1R identified in patients have been associated with iodiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) (1,2) and precocious puberty (4). Functional studies of these mutants are crucial for our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the regulation of reproduction by this receptor as well as those shaping the disease outcomes, which result from abnormal KISS1R signaling and function. However, the high

Isolated premature menarche in two siblings with Neurofibromatosis type 1.

Objectives Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder, caused by mutation in NF1. The condition is typified by the development of benign and malignant tumours in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. Isolated menarche is a sub-classification of incomplete isosexual precocious puberty typified by menarche in girls with no other features of pubertal development. The effects of NF1 on pubertal timing are poorly understood, we report two siblings with NF1 and apparent abnormal pubertal development. Case Presentation Two siblings were referred to the

Van Wyk and Grumbach Syndrome: An Unusual Presentation of Hypothyroism.

An 18 years-old-girl presented one and half years back with the complaints of short stature, retarded growth, and menorrhagia with sudden severe lower abdominal pain; was diagnosed as bilateral ovarian cysts and underwent bilateral ovarian cystectomy. Later on she was incidentally diagnosed as a case of hypothyroidism when she had been experiencing slowly enlarging left lower abdominal mass with dull ache for the 5 month and then was transferred to the department of Endocrinology for further evaluation. Detailed work up revealed her short stature with obesity, delayed bone age and other featur

Pre-menarche pubertal development following unique form of immigration: the case of girls adopted from China.

Our study tested the hypothesis that drastic social-cultural change has an impact on girls' pre-menarche pubertal development. We focused on a unique group of Chinese immigrants who migrated out of China in infancy through international adoption. Our sample included 298 Chinese girls who were 7.3-11.1 years in 2011 (Mean = 8.8, SD = 0.9) and were adopted at 7-24 months (Mean = 12.6, SD = 3.4). We found that 34% showed at least one of four signs of pubertal development: Growth spurt, body fat increase, breast development, and body hair. Logistic regression analyses showed that the odds of growt

Contrasting intellectual patterns predict creativity in the arts and sciences: tracking intellectually precocious youth over 25 years.

A sample of 2,409 intellectually talented adolescents (top 1%) who were assessed on the SAT by age 13 was tracked longitudinally for more than 25 years. Their creative accomplishments, with particular emphasis on literary achievement and scientific-technical innovation, were examined as a function of ability level (sum of math and verbal SAT scores) and tilt (math SAT score minus verbal SAT score). Results showed that distinct ability patterns uncovered by age 13 portend contrasting forms of creative expression by middle age. Whereas ability level contributes significantly to creative accompli

Intracranial gliomas in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Optic pathway gliomas and brainstem gliomas are the predominant intracranial neoplasms associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Before the past 15 years, studies of optic pathway gliomas in NF1 were hampered by the inaccurate diagnosis of NF1, the unavailability of noninvasive neuroimaging techniques, and the frequent rendering of what would now be considered unnecessary, overly aggressive therapy. When studied systematically, these tumors behave in a much more benign fashion than their counterparts in children who do not have NF1. While they may cause symptoms in as many of 50% of case

Sexual precocity due to intracranial human chorionic gonadotropin-secreting tumor: report of a case.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)-secreting tumors are one of the causes of isosexual precocity in boys. A seven-year-old boy had been noted to have an increased appetite, accelerated growth and the development of pubic hair in the previous three months. He had an elevated serum testosterone level (16.79 ng/mL). However, the response of luteinizing-hormone and follicle-stimulating-hormone to gonadotropin releasing hormone stimulation was suppressed. An intracranial tumor at the left thalamus was disclosed by a magnetic resonance image scan of the head, and an elevated HCG level (120 mIU/mL) w
