Short report: Phylogenetic relationships of the anthropophilic Plasmodium falciparum malaria vectors in Africa.

Malaria kills more than one million people a year, and understanding the historical association between its most notorious causative agent, Plasmodium falciparum, and its mosquito vectors is important in fighting the disease. We present a phylogenetic analysis of a number of species within the mosquito subgenus Cellia based on a selection of mitochondrial and nuclear genes. Although some of these relationships have been estimated in other studies, generally few species were included and/or statistical support at many nodes was low. Here we include two additional species of anthropophilic P. fa

Examining the determinants of mosquito-avoidance practices in two Kenyan cities.

BACKGROUND: This study assesses the behavioural and socio-economic factors associated with avoiding mosquitoes and preventing malaria in urban environments in Kenya. METHODS: Data from two cities in Kenya were gathered using a household survey and a two-stage cluster sample design. The cities were stratified based on planning and drainage observed across the urban areas. This helped control for the strong environmental and topographical variation that we assumed influences mosquito ecology. Individual interviews given to each household included questions on socio-economic status, education, h

Antibodies to the repetitive epitope of Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein in a rural Tanzanian community: a longitudinal study of 132 children.

An ELISA employing a novel synthetic peptide consisting of 40 (Asn-Ala-Asn-Pro) repeats of Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein, (NANP)40, was used to detect antibodies against P. falciparum circumsporozoite protein in 132 children, 1 month to 15 years old, from a rural community (Kikwawila village) of Tanzania, a region where malaria is hyperendemic. The children were surveyed comprehensively over 3 consecutive years for clinical, parasitological, and serological parameters. Entomological data were also gathered for selected households in this village. The following results were obt

A prospective study of the effects of ultralow volume (ULV) aerial application of malathion on epidemic Plasmodium falciparum malaria. III. Ecologic aspects.

The effects of aerial ultralow volume (ULV) malathion on selected species of nontarget animals in Haiti are reported. Mortality of certain groups of insects such as bees, flies, beetles, and butterflies was observed immediately following spray application. Minor fish mortality occurred only in shallow water exposed to direct spray. The brain acetylcholine esterase levels of living fish, tree lizards, birds and bats collected from treated areas were not significantly reduced. No ill or dead animals, besides the few fish, were seen even when maximum exposure occurred. Only minor changes in the f

Is mass drug administration against lymphatic filariasis required in urban settings? The experience in Kano, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF), launched in 2000, has the target of eliminating the disease as a public health problem by the year 2020. The strategy adopted is mass drug administration (MDA) to all eligible individuals in endemic communities and the implementation of measures to reduce the morbidity of those suffering from chronic disease. Success has been recorded in many rural endemic communities in which elimination efforts have centered. However, implementation has been challenging in several urban African cities. The large cities of West Africa

Low frequency of anti-Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite repeat antibodies and rate of high malaria transmission in endemic areas of Rondonia State in northwestern Brazil.

In areas studied in the Rondonia State of Brazil, a high rate of malaria transmission and a low prevalence of anti-(NANP)4 antibodies are reported. The entomologic data are comparable to those observed in some malaria-endemic areas of Africa and Asia. However, the frequency of individuals with antibodies to the immunodominant epitope of the circumsporozoite protein of Plasmodium falciparum recorded in the four localities of Rondonia state was very low when compared with the frequencies recorded in other African and Asian endemic areas. Most of the studies performed in Africa and Asia concerned

Five-year trend analysis of malaria prevalence at Pawe General Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, from 2020 to 2024: A cross-sectional retrospective study (STROBE compliant).

Globally, malaria remains a major public health challenge caused by Plasmodium species and is transmitted through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. Monitoring trends in malaria prevalence is crucial for effective disease control and prevention. Thus, this study aimed to assess the five-year trend of malaria prevalence at Pawe General Hospital (PGH) in northwest Ethiopia from 2020 to 2024. A retrospective review of laboratory registration logbooks was conducted to analyze malaria blood film examination results. The STROBE statement was followed to report the current study. Data were co…

Biological characterization of chemically diverse compounds targeting the Plasmodium falciparum coenzyme A synthesis pathway.

BACKGROUND: In the fight against malaria, the discovery of chemical compounds with a novel mode of action and/or chemistry distinct from currently used drugs is vital to counteract the parasite's known ability to develop drug resistance. Another desirable aspect is efficacy against gametocytes, the sexual developmental stage of the parasite which enables the transmission through Anopheles vectors. Using a chemical rescue approach, we previously identified compounds targeting Plasmodium falciparum coenzyme A (CoA) synthesis or utilization, a promising target that has not yet been exploited in a…
