Cardiac Image Segmentation Under Respiratory Motion Artifacts Using Different Modified U-Net Models.

Precise segmentation of cardiac magnetic resonance images (CMR) is essential to quantitative measurements of the heart, yet it is often affected by respiratory motion misregistration's and this is particularly common in free-breathing patient environments. These artifacts reduce the quality of the image and present a big challenge to traditional deep learning models such as the baseline U-Net. This paper carries out a systematic evaluation of the capabilities of four alternate U-Net architectures, Attention U-Net, Dense U-Net, Residual U-Net and Sharp U-Net, on CMR data with synthetically adde

[Research methods and technological advancements in herbal material science].

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), as a complex system of substances, has long faced the challenges of an unclear material basis and obscure mechanisms of action, which has hindered its modernization and internationalization. To address these challenges, the "Herbalome" project was launched in 2007. This initiative aims to systematically reveal the material composition, structure, and biological functions of TCM through the integration of multidisciplinary technologies, thereby elucidating the synergistic mechanisms of multi-component and multi-target interactions. This paper reviews key meth

Development and feasibility assessment of an automated, synthetic CT-guided plan selection system for bladder cancer adaptive radiotherapy: a retrospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Interfractional bladder volume variation during radiotherapy challenges the optimality of a single treatment plan. We developed and conducted a pilot feasibility study of a decision support system to select the optimal plan of the day (PotD) using daily imaging, aiming to translate a sophisticated online adaptive radiotherapy (ART) workflow into clinical practice. METHODS: A Python script was developed in the RayStation treatment planning system (TPS). For12 patients, a library of three volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans was auto-generated from planning computed tomogra

Multi-Modal Feature Fusion and Hierarchical Classification for Automated Equine-Human Interaction Behavior Recognition.

Automated recognition of equine-human interaction behaviors from video represents a significant challenge in computational ethology, with critical applications spanning animal welfare assessment, equine-assisted services evaluation, and safety monitoring in equestrian environments. Existing approaches to animal behavior recognition typically focus on single species in isolation, rely solely on facial expression analysis while ignoring full-body posture, or employ flat classification architectures that fail under the severe class imbalances characteristic of naturalistic behavioral datasets. Active bone marrow dose reconstruction in a large-scale cohort study of cancer patients treated with photon radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have investigated the dose-response relationship between external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and leukemia by reconstructing the mean active bone marrow (ABM) dose as part of the exposure assessment. However, no prior study has leveraged electronic medical records (EMR) to reconstruct ABM dose and dose-volume in an EBRT patient population. PURPOSE: To support future studies on the relationship between radiation exposure and adverse health effects among EBRT patients, we demonstrate methods to retrospectively calculate ABM dose and dose-volume metrics in a large patie

Robustness analysis to mitigate setup uncertainties in head-neck rapid arc treatment: A different approach to image-guided radiotherapy decision-making.

AIM: The occurrence of setup errors in external beam radiation is an inevitable aspect. As a result of technological progress in image verification, it became feasible to decrease its occurrence; however, complete eradication remained unattainable. Various methodologies have been implemented in clinical settings to measure and evaluate the extent of setup mistakes. Further analysis is required to gain a deeper understanding of the effects of setup mistakes on dose-volume histograms (DVHs), which will inform decision-making in the context of setup-related issues. This study aimed to quantify th

Augmented reality simulation framework for minimally invasive orthopedic surgery.

PURPOSE: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has emerged in clinical practice to minimize surgical trauma, providing patients with faster recovery, reduced pain and complications and enhanced aesthetic results compared to traditional surgery. However, this approach increase the risk of iatrogenic damage, i.e. the accidental injury to sensitive anatomical structures (eg. nerves and vascular strcuteres) not directly visible during a percutaneous access. Augmented reality (AR) can effectively mitigate these drawbacks by overlaying graphical information onto the surgical field and providing real-time

Quantifying localized bone loss in clinical computed tomography using void spaces.

UNLABELLED: Localized bone loss, known as void spaces, is not captured using standard measures in clinical computed tomography (CT). This study validated the use of CT to systemically assess void spaces throughout the skeleton. We found that void spaces were localized to skeleton regions (e.g., L3 vs L4), providing new insights into bone fragility. INTRODUCTION: Localized trabecular bone microarchitectural loss, referred to as void spaces, can be measured using HR-pQCT and is related to bone fragility. Due to gantry size constraints, HR-pQCT is limited to peripheral sites; therefore, it is un

The bi-phasic behaviour of grey matter networks after the first demyelinating attack.

Multiple sclerosis can be considered a network disease. Accumulating evidence recognizes the following importance of grey matter networks: they only require high-resolution anatomical scans for their extraction, they capture changes beyond detectable atrophy and their alteration is associated with disability progression and cognitive impairment. Therefore, it is crucial to understand their behaviours over the initial years of the disease. This observational longitudinal study aimed to investigate changes in grey matter networks after the first demyelinating attack, and how they correlate with

Accounting for Fast vs Slow Exchange in Single Molecule FRET Experiments Reveals Hidden Conformational States.

Proteins are dynamic systems whose structural preferences determine their function. Unfortunately, building atomically detailed models of protein structural ensembles remains challenging, limiting our understanding of the relationships between sequence, structure, and function. Combining single molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) experiments with molecular dynamics simulations could provide experimentally grounded, all-atom models of a protein's structural ensemble. However, agreement between the two techniques is often insufficient to achieve this goal. Here, we explore whethe
