A comprehensive review on scientific evidence-based effects (including adverse effects) of yoga for normal and high-risk pregnancy-related health problems.

Women undergo distinct physiological changes and stress during pregnancy that are accompanied by various physical and psychological demands. Yoga is a complementary therapy that is commonly used by pregnant women and recommended by healthcare professionals. Thus, it is very important to know its evidence based effects, including adverse effects from all types of research. A comprehensive literature search in PubMed/Medline electronic database from inception to 23 September 2017 was performed using the keywords "yoga for pregnancy". In total, 137 articles published since 1979 were available. Of

Maternal depression is associated with injuries in children aged 2-4 years: the Pelotas 2004 Birth Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Injuries during childhood, which mostly consist of falls, burns, drowning, poisonings and car crashes, are among the main causes of death among children and young adults in several countries. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between maternal depression and the incidence of injuries during childhood. METHODS: In 2004, children who were born in the municipality of Pelotas, Brazil, were enrolled in a population-based birth cohort, with evaluations at birth and at 3, 12, 24 and 48 months of age. Maternal depression during pregnancy was evaluated at the time of delivery. A

Introduction.

This symposium includes twelve personal, heartfelt narratives about joys, challenges, and, in some cases, trauma associated with labor and delivery experiences. This issue also includes three commentaries on these narratives by 1.) Raymond De Vries, PhD, 2.) Anne Lyerly, MD, MA, 3.) Jason Wasserman, PhD and Nicole Wasserman, MPH. This issue can provide information for clinicians and support staff on ways to facilitate patient and family engagement during this emotionally-laden time for parents. Supporting birth experiences, connecting with patients, involving them in decisions, and recognizing

HDL-cholesterol concentrations are inversely associated with Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale scores during pregnancy: results from a Brazilian cohort study.

Serum lipids have been associated with depression in the adult population; however, this association during pregnancy remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between serum lipids and depressive symptom scores during pregnancy. A prospective cohort of 238 pregnant women was followed at the 5th-13th, 20th-26th and 30th-36th weeks of gestation. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Serum concentrations (mg/dL) of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low- and high-density lipoproteins (LDL-c; HDL-c) were the main ex

Treating recurrent affective disorders during and after pregnancy. What can be taken safely?

Since pregnancy and the time thereafter is a precarious period for women with recurrent affective disorders and their offspring, it is important to determine the risk of various treatments for such disorders. This review assesses the risk to the fetus, the perinatal risks for mother and infant, the risks associated with treatment during the puerperium and breastfeeding, and the risks to the later development of the child. This review considers treatment with lithium, tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), selective serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase

Relationship of prenatal cocaine exposure and maternal postpartum psychological distress to child developmental outcome.

Maternal cocaine use during pregnancy can affect the infant directly through toxic effects or indirectly through cocaine's influence on maternal psychological status. We followed 160 cocaine exposed and 56 nonexposed infants and their mothers identified at birth through interview and/or urine screen. Although cocaine exposure defined the groups, infant exposure to alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco was allowed to vary. Infants were 99% African American and poor. All mothers completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and infants were given the Bayley Scales of Mental (MDI) and Motor (PDI) Develop

Examining the Impact of Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Perinatal Mental Health Outcomes Among Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence (The PATH Study): Protocol for a Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health problem, impacting the health and quality of life of survivors worldwide. The trauma of IPV is associated with a high incidence of mental illness, namely depressive and anxiety disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Moreover, literature endorses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions as a gold standard for those with symptomatology consistent with anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and PTSD. However, efficacy has not been evaluated among a population of pregnant survivors of IPV. OBJECTIVE: We pre

Machine learning applications in risk management: Trends and research agenda.

Risk management has become a foundational aspect in numerous industries, propelling the implementation of machine learning technologies for impact assessment, prevention, and decision-making processes. Nevertheless, lacunae in the extant literature persist, particularly with regard to the identification of emergent trends and transversal applications. This study addresses this limitation through a bibliometric analysis of scientific production in Scopus and Web of Science, adhering to the PRISMA-2020 declaration. The findings reveal a substantial growth in publications on machine learning appl

The Paradox of Sexual Dysfunction Observed during Pregnancy.

The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of sexual function throughout pregnancy and highlight the predicting factors of sexual dysfunction in pregnant women. Our study included 144 participants, aged 16 to 45. Patients were evaluated three times during pregnancy by filling out the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Body Exposure in Sexual Activities Questionnaire (BESAQ). At the time of the last evaluation, we asked patients to also fill out Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and a questionnaire regarding their psychological status and relationship satisfaction. We observe

My Paradoxical Sunrises and the Ongoing Amazing Grace of NICU Narrative Medicine.

In this autoethnographic account of my experience as a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) mother, I bring attention to socially silenced health issues begging our acknowledgment. The lack of discourse about complications with pregnancies and births leave too many women and men shocked and traumatized by experiences that are far more common than we believe. Currently, 10 percent of pregnancies in the United States end in preterm birth, which are often accompanied by a variety of serious health conditions requiring newborns to be admitted to a NICU. Postpartum depression rates among NICU mother

Consumption of Maternal Placenta in Humans and Nonhuman Mammals: Beneficial and Adverse Effects.

Placentophagia is a common mammalian behavior, and the first scientific study of the potential effects of human maternal placentophagia on lactation was in 1917. More recently, in the 1970s, human placentophagia was reported in North America with a trend toward increased consumption. There are different hypotheses about the women and nonhuman mammals' motivation towards placentophagia, but few have been subject to hypotheses testing. In women, the controversy continues; on the one hand, researchers attribute benefits like increased breast milk, weight gain in newborns, decreased postpartum dep

Neonatal handling alters maternal emotional response to stress.

Neonatal handling is an experimental procedure used to analyze the effects of environmental interventions during early postpartum days (PPD). Long-lasting effects of repeated stress exposure in the neonatal period on the maternal side are poorly studied in this model. The aim of this study was to verify if handling the pups induces enduring effects on damśstress responses, increasing their risk for depression. Dams were divided into two groups (NH-Non-handled and H-Handled) based on the handling procedure (pups were handled for 1 min/per day from PPD1-PPD10) and then subdivided into four group

Effects of abomasal infusion of long-chain fatty acids on intake, feeding behavior and milk production in dairy cows.

Fat is often fed to dairy cows to increase the energy concentration of their diet; however, feeding fat often reduces dry matter intake (DMI), which limits its impact on metabolizable energy (ME) intake. To investigate the effects of postruminal fat infusion on intake, feeding behavior, and milk production of dairy cows at two stages of lactation (55 and 111 d postpartum), six Holstein x British Friesian cows were infused into the abomasum, with a mixture of rapeseed and sunflower oils supplying predominantly unsaturated long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Dry matter intake was significantly depres

Maternal depression and filicide-case study of ten mothers.

This study describes ten cases of filicides committed by mothers who intentionally killed one or more of their children within 12 months after delivery. The data were collected from police and court records, forensic psychiatric records, autopsy reports, and other medical records. The mean age of the mothers was 28.5 years and of the victims 4 months. The symptoms of depression were clear: an irritable, severely depressed mood with crying spells, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, preoccupation with worries about the baby's well-being and the mother's caring abilities, suicidal ideation, or even psyc

Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex: Report of Two Cases and Postulated Mechanisms and Treatment.

Background: The symptoms of Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) occur just before milk release, last no more than a few minutes, and then subside spontaneously, which are characterized by a sudden and transient feeling of dysphoria, depression, sadness, or other negative emotions. These emotions may adversely affect the mother's lactation behavior and mental health, negatively influence the mother-child relationship, and even result in self-harm or suicidal tendencies in lactating women. Case Presentation: We reported two cases of breastfeeding mothers with D-MER who experienced unpleasant

Outpatient Treatment With Gabapentin in Women With Severe Acute Pain After Cesarean Delivery Is Ineffective: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Most of the 1.1 million women who deliver by cesarean in the United States each year have an uncomplicated recovery. However, severe pain resistant to standard multimodal therapy within the first days after surgery is associated with an increased risk for prolonged pain and opioid use. The best outpatient management for parturients with severe resistant early onset pain is not known. METHODS: We performed a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of up to 12 weeks of outpatient treatment with gabapentin to evaluate its effectiveness to facilitate opioid ces
