A technique for ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fracture using the sliding compression hip screw with plate combined with trochanteric antegrade Ender nailing of the femur was applied in two cases. Ender nails can be passed without difficulty past a compression hip screw and the bicortical plating screws. The hip and femur can be fixed internally through a single approach in a single position. Sliding compression hip screw devices can provide excellent preliminary stable femoral neck fixation. Blood supply to the femoral head is not disturbed while the femoral intramedullary fixation is per

Die-punch fractures or impaction fractures of distal radius articular surface are difficult to treat and hard to achieve satisfactory reduction. We present a unique, percutaneous and minimally invasive technique to elevate the depressed lunate fossa and maintain the reduction of the elevated fragment with no need of grafting in such fractures. This technique is simple, reproducible and can be executed with simple instrumentations. We think it deserves a variety of implications in the treatment of distal radius fractures.

The vascularized medial femoral condyle bone graft has many clinical applications. It can be harvested as a thin, pliable, corticoperiosteal graft and wrapped around recalcitrant nonunions in long bones to achieve osseous union. It can also be harvested as a small, structural, corticocancellous graft and used to treat small defects such as scaphoid avascular nonunion. We present a case of thumb metacarpal osteomyelitis resulting in a large segmental osseous defect. Reconstruction was performed using a large, structural, vascularized bone graft from the medial femoral condyle.

After the treatment of patella fractures the only way to evaluate healing at the articular surface before implant removal is through arthroscopy. The purpose of this study was to examine the healing potential of the cartilage. Arthroscopy was performed in 18 patients at the time of implant removal. The mean age of the patients was 42.1 years. The time elapsed from the index surgery to the arthroscopy and implant removal surgery was 12.9 months. During the arthroscopy, we inspected articular step-off, cartilage loss, and joint surface irregularities. Cartilage irregularities were observed in 13

Thirty-two patients with acute calcaneal fractures presented to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Miami, Florida, from October 1985 through March 1994. Twenty-three of these patients were open-reduced, and nine were immobilized in a short leg nonweight-bearing cast for a minimum period of 6 weeks. Of the 23 patients who had open reduction with internal fixation, 74% reported excellent results, 13% reported good results, 4% had fair results, and 9% had poor results. Of the nine patients who did not undergo open-reduction internal fixation, three subsequently developed poor results, two devel

This study explores the inertial effects of the head and torso on cervical spine dynamics with the specific goal of determining whether the head mass can provide a constraining cervical spine end condition. The hypothesis was tested using a low friction impact surface and a pocketing foam impact surface. Impact orientation was also varied. Tests were conducted on whole unembalmed heads and cervical spines using a drop track system to produce impact velocities on the order of 3.2 m s-1. Data for the head impact forces and the reactions at T1 were recorded and the tests were also imaged at 1000

BACKGROUND: While the majority of tibial shaft fractures in pediatric patients are managed nonoperatively with closed reduction and casting, it is unknown how much remodeling occurs in young patients. We hypothesize that younger children would exhibit greater remodeling and lower residual angulation compared to older children six months post-injury.
METHODS: Patients under age 17 years at a major pediatric health system with ICD-9 or ICD-10 codes for closed tibial shaft fractures between January 2009 and August 2023 were included. Patients with radiographs at baseline and six-month follow-up

BACKGROUND: There are strong torsional forces acting on the anterior mandible fractures. Maxillofacial surgery makes extensive use of digital technology, and three-dimensional printing is now an integral element of the workflow in several areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Three-dimensional (3D) miniplates had been proposed by several researchers as a good option for mandibular fracture fixation. This clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of virtual planning in anterior mandibular fixation by comparing postoperative outcomes with preoperative virtual planning and to evalu

As a postoperative complication in nasoethmoid-orbital fractures, nasal depression often occurs. The cause of this is an overlooked left nasal septum fracture. By reducing and fixing the nasal septum, nasal depression could have been avoided. Kirschner wire is useful for the fixation of the nasal septum, and it is fixed with zygomatic bone or/and frontal process of the maxillary bone. Three cases of nasoethmoid-orbital fractures were treated with this method. Kirschner wire fixation of the nasal septum is a simple and an easy method and can avoid unnecessary bone graft.

A resorbable fixation system has many advantages, but there are complicated procedures to be accomplished to fix a resorbable plate. The complicated procedures in the fixation of a resorbable plate make the operation for facial fractures more difficult and can result in extended operation time and incomplete reduction or fixation. For these reasons, we suggest a new way of using a tapper that can make the surgery more simple and accurate than before. After the resorbable plate is properly located above the fractured site, a hole on the fracture fragment is made by drill, and the tapper is inse

BACKGROUND: Proximal humeral shaft fractures are surgically challenging and plate osteosynthesis with a long straight plate is one operative treatment option in these patients although endangering the radial nerve distally. Helical plates potentially avoid the radial nerve by twisting around the humeral shaft. Aim of the study was to investigate in a human cadaveric model the biomechanical competence of helical plates versus straight lateral plates used for fixation of proximal third comminuted humeral shaft fractures.
METHODS: Eight pairs of humeral cadaveric humeri were instrumented using e

BACKGROUND: Adequate fixation of replanted digits is essential not only for short-term healing but for long-term function. Various bony fixation methods using Kirschner (K-) and intraosseous wire are available in replantation. We examined clinical and radiographic outcomes of fixation methods on bone union after digital replantation.
METHODS: A single institutional retrospective review identified 992 patients who had undergone 1,247 successful replantations between July 2009 and September 2015. Exclusion criteria included amputations of the distal phalanx, comminuted fractures, and intra-arti

BACKGROUND: Complex fragmentation of the distal radial articular surface often results in three major problems: some fragments are too small for stabilisation by standard plates or screws; in addition, substantial loss of articular surfaces and metaphyseal/subchondral bony defects frequently occur.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: To solve these problems the following strategy was developed: the fixation of small articular fragments was performed by small K-wires that were placed subchondrally and countersunk in the bone. In case of lost articular surfaces a silicone foil was inserted intra-articularly
