Comparison of individual and pooled diagnostic examination strategies during the national mapping of soil-transmitted helminths and Schistosoma mansoni in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory-based studies have highlighted that pooling stool and urine samples can reduce costs and diagnostic burden without a negative impact on the ability to estimate the intensity of soil-transmitted helminth (STH, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworms) and schistosome infections (Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium). In this study, we compare individual and pooled stool examination strategies in a programmatic setting. METHODS: Stool samples were collected from 2,650 children in 53 primary schools in Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia, during the national m

Prevalence of intestinal parasitoses detected in Padua teaching hospital, Italy, March 2011 - February 2013.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of parasitic intestinal infections in patients attending Padua teaching hospital during a two-year period. Between 1st March 2011 and 28th February 2013, we examined stool specimens from 7341 patients (6127 Italians, 1214 non-Italians) for ova and parasites using microscopy, rapid enzyme immunoassays, culture techniques and molecular methods. Stools of 1080 patients (14.71%) were positive for parasites; a total of 1349 intestinal parasites were counted. Protozoa were detected in 1028/1080 patients (95.19%), while helminths were present in

Schistosoma, other helminth infections, and associated risk factors in preschool-aged children in urban Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of helminth infections among preschool-aged children, control programs in sub-Saharan countries primarily focus on school-aged populations. We assessed the prevalence of helminth infections and determined risk factors for infection among preschool-aged children in the urban setting of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. METHODOLOGY: Starting in October 2015, we conducted a 12-month prospective study among tuberculosis (TB)-exposed children under the age of 5 years and unexposed controls from neighboring households. At the time of recruitment, we collected medical

Effects of treating helminths during pregnancy and early childhood on risk of allergy-related outcomes: Follow-up of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections, common in low-income countries, may protect against allergy-related disease. Early exposure may be a key. In the Entebbe Mother and Baby Study, treating helminths during pregnancy resulted in increased eczema rates in early childhood. We followed the cohort to determine whether this translated to increased asthma rates at school age. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, conducted in Entebbe, Uganda, had three interventions. During pregnancy, women were randomized, simultaneously, to albendazole vs placebo and to praziquantel vs pla

[Concordance between the zinc sulphate flotation and centrifugal sedimentation methods for the diagnosis of intestinal parasites].

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infections depends on the parasite load, the specific gravity density of the parasite eggs, oocysts or cysts, and the density and viscosity of flotation or sedimentation medium where faeces are processed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the concordance between zinc sulphate flotation and centrifugal sedimentation in the recovery of parasites in faecal samples of children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Faecal samples of 330 children from day care centers were evaluated by zinc sulphate flotation and centrifugal sedimentation techniques. The frequencies of d

Urban schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminthiases in young school children in Dar es Salaam and Tanga, Tanzania, after a decade of anthelminthic intervention.

Rapid urbanization in resource poor countries often results in expansion of unplanned settlements with overcrowding and inadequate sanitation. These conditions potentially support transmission of schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths (STH), but knowledge on the occurrence, transmission and control of these infections in urban settings is limited. The present study assessed the status of urinary schistosomiasis and STH across two different-sized cities in Tanzania - Dar es Salaam and Tanga - after a decade of anthelminthic intervention. Primary school children were examined for parasit

The prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in the urban slums of a city in Western India.

BACKGROUND: There is scant information available on the prevalence of parasitic infections in Gujarat, a state in Western India. The present community-based study was undertaken in the urban slums of a city in Gujarat to determine the following parameters: (a) the prevalence and type of pathogenic intestinal parasites and (b) the availability of sanitary facilities in the study population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2008, and the study participants were urban slum dwellers. Considering an expected infection prevalence of 30% among slum dwellers, an allo

Helminthic infection and the risk of neurologic disease progression in HTLV-1.

BACKGROUND: Infection with the human T-cell lymphotropic virus, type 1 (HTLV-1) has been associated with an increased Th1 response. Interestingly, a higher prevalence of helminthic coinfection has been observed among infected individuals, and subsequent modulation of the immune response typically associated with helminths may influence clinical outcomes among HTLV-1 coinfected individuals. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to elucidate the association between helminthic coinfection and the development of clinically characterized neurologic disease that occurs in HTLV-1 infection. STUDY DES

Soil-transmitted helminth and other intestinal parasitic infections among school children in indigenous people communities in Davao del Norte, Philippines.

A significant portion of the population in the Philippines consists of indigenous people (IP) groups, approximately 9% or 8.1 million. Data on the health status of these groups are very limited including the status of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections. Provision of such data will be of great importance in the formulation of policy on control and prevention of these diseases in this group. This study was conducted in selected villages/barangays in the municipalities of Carmen, Kapalong, San Isidro and Sto. Tomas in the Province of Davao del Norte in Southern Mindanao, Philippines. [Relevance of helminths in the prevention and healing of immune diseases].

The incidence of immune diseases has had a steady significant increase in the industrialized countries since the end of the last century. Epidemiological data suggest that prevention of exposure to helminths may be one of the factors promoting the rise in these diseases. Animal models of immune diseases support this concept by showing that these parasites can prevent and reverse developed diseases. Helminths strongly modulate the host's immune system inducing regulatory immune cells and pathways that afford protection from these illnesses. Helminthic therapy has emerged as a promising treatmen

Earth-eating and reinfection with intestinal helminths among pregnant and lactating women in western Kenya.

We conducted a longitudinal study among 827 pregnant women in Nyanza Province, western Kenya, to determine the effect of earth-eating on geohelminth reinfection after treatment. The women were recruited at a gestational age of 14-24 weeks (median: 17) and followed up to 6 months postpartum. The median age was 23 (range: 14-47) years, the median parity 2 (range: 0-11). After deworming with mebendazole (500 mg, single dose) of those found infected at 32 weeks gestation, 700 women were uninfected with Ascaris lumbricoides, 670 with Trichuris trichiura and 479 with hookworm. At delivery, 11.2%, 4.

A study of risk factors for intestinal helminth infections using epidemiological and anthropological approaches.

This study. conducted in Kisumu District, Kenya, identified important risk factors for infection with intestinal helminths using traditional epidemiological methods. This was combined with a rapid assessment study using qualitative methods, which focused on sanitation practices and local illness perceptions. The multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the absence of latrines was a significant predictor for hookworm infection with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.9. The analysis also revealed that households without soap had a 2.6 times higher risk of being infected with Ascaris lumbricoides

Modulation of the allergic reactivity of slum children by helminthic infection.

Infection by helminthic parasites can cause the polyclonal stimulation of IgE synthesis, possibly via an enhanced production of interleukin-4 (IL-4), and this has been suggested to influence the allergic reactivity of tropical populations where these parasites are endemic. We evaluated a group of urban slum children in Caracas, Venezuela, with a high prevalence of helminthic infection (70.8%), to establish the relationship between the elevated IgE levels (3696 IU/ml) induced by these parasites and various aspects of the allergic response. Although the absolute levels of IL-4 detected in the se

Immunodiagnostic tests for protozoan and helminthic infections.

Immunodiagnostic tests for human protozoan and helminthic infections are reviewed. The need for immunodiagnostic tests varies with each infection but is of paramount importance in those infections that cannot be parasitologically diagnosed readily such as toxoplasmosis, pneumocystosis, Chagas' disease, trichinosis, hydatidosis, cysticercosis, and visceral larva migrans. Immunoassays are also needed for those worldwide highly prevalent infections with severe morbidity to be used in seroepidemiology and in the follow-up evaluation of control programs. The most important are malaria, schistosomia

High Seropositivity for Helminths in Immunosuppressed Patients with Peripheral Eosinophilia.

PURPOSE: Eosinophilia is a hallmark of many helminthic infections. However, the underlying parasitic etiology often goes undetected-especially in immunosuppressed patients. We aimed to evaluate the helminthic seropositivity in immunosuppressed patients with peripheral eosinophilia at a tertiary care hospital in north India. METHODS: In this retrospective observational cross-sectional study, a total of 115 immunosuppressed patients with eosinophilia were subjected to serological testing for six common helminths, i.e., IgG antibodies against Strongyloides stercoralis, Toxocara canis, Trichinell
