HIV/AIDS and the African-American Community 2018: a Decade Call to Action.

HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects African-Americans more than any other racial or ethnic group in the USA. Currently representing only 12% of the US population, African-Americans now comprise close to half of the total reported HIV/AIDS cases in the USA according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since the initial reporting of HIV/AIDS. In this paper, we examined the prevalence and current direction of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the African-American community especially in comparison to our first call to action in 2008. The situation remains dire and broader attention is necess

Implementation of a Test, Treat, and Prevent HIV program among men who have sex with men and transgender women in Thailand, 2015-2016.

INTRODUCTION: Antiretroviral therapy reduces the risk of serious illness among people living with HIV and can prevent HIV transmission. We implemented a Test, Treat, and Prevent HIV Program among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women at five hospitals in four provinces of Thailand to increase HIV testing, help those who test positive start antiretroviral therapy, and increase access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). METHODS: We implemented rapid HIV testing and trained staff on immediate antiretroviral initiation at the five hospitals and offered PrEP at two hospitals. We re

Limited awareness of pre-exposure prophylaxis among black men who have sex with men and transgender women in New York city.

Awareness of Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was assessed among a cohort of substance-using black men who have sex with men and transgender women (MSM/TGW) participating in the STAR Study, which recruited black MSM/TGW in New York City for HIV testing and linked HIV-infected individuals into care from July 2012 to April 2015. Sociodemographic, psychosocial, known HIV risk factors, and PrEP awareness were assessed among participants. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to assess factors associated with PrEP awareness. Of 1673 participants, median age was 43 years and 25% were under

Association of cytologic grade of anal "Pap" smears with viral loads of human papillomavirus types 16, 18, and 52 detected in the same specimens from men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma virus (HPV) load has been linked to cellular abnormalities of the uterine cervix, and proposed as predictors of HPV persistence and progression of dysplasia to cervical cancer. However, the association of HPV viral load and anal dysplasia and cancer has not been as thoroughly investigated. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of the viral loads of high-risk HPV types 16, 18, and 52, with the cytologic severity grading in anal-swab specimens of MSM with and without HIV-1 co-infection. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study recruited 200 MSM in northern Thailand fr

Knowledge and exercise of human rights, and barriers and facilitators to claiming rights: a cross-sectional study of female sex workers and high-risk men who have sex with men in Andhra Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: HIV prevention interventions recognize the need to protect the rights of key populations and support them to claim their rights as a vulnerability reduction strategy. This study explores knowledge of human rights, and barriers and facilitators to claiming rights, among female sex workers (FSWs) and high-risk men who have sex with men (HR-MSM) who are beneficiaries of a community mobilization intervention in Andhra Pradesh, India. METHODS: Data are drawn from a cross-sectional survey (2014) among 2400 FSWs and 1200 HR-MSM. Human rights awareness was assessed by asking respondents i

HIV sexual risk behavior among black men who meet other men on the internet for sex.

Using the Internet to meet sexual partners is associated with increased HIV risk behavior, including substance use, sex with multiple or anonymous partners, and unprotected anal sex (UAS), among diverse samples of MSM, yet little is known about Internet use and HIV risk among Black MSM specifically. In 2008, a sample of 197 Black MSM completed an interviewer-administered assessment and voluntary HIV counseling and testing. One fifth of the sample (20 %) reported meeting a sexual partner via the Internet in the past 12 months. Men who met sexual partners over the Internet had significantly more

The early phase of an HIV epidemic in a population exposed previously to HCV in the Philippines.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) sentinel surveillance program for injecting drug users has been conducted in Metro Cebu, the Philippines. A low prevalence (0-0.52%) of anti-HIV-positivity had been detected in this population from 2002 to 2007. However, a 10-fold increase in HIV prevalence was detected in the 2009 national HIV sentinel surveillance program. It prompted an additional outreach program to be conducted in Metro Cebu in January 2010, which recorded the highest HIV prevalence rate ever documented in the Philippines (75%, 44/59). HIV genes from fourteen 2009 to 2010 Metro Cebu stra

High performance and acceptability of self-collected rectal swabs for diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in men who have sex with men and women.

BACKGROUND: Identification of sexually transmitted infections (STI) is limited by the infrequent assessment of rectal STI. This study assesses usability of self-collected rectal swabs (SRS) in diagnosing rectal Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG). METHODS: In 2006 to 2007, clients of the Amsterdam and South Limburg STI outpatient clinics reporting receptive anal intercourse were asked to fill out a questionnaire and provide SRS. A standard provider-collected rectal swab (PRS) was also taken, and both were tested for CT and NG by a nucleic acid amplification tests. SRS pe

Seroepidemiology of cytomegalovirus in patients with advanced HIV disease: influence on disease expression and survival.

To determine the prevalence and effect of cytomegalovirus (CMV) co-infection on clinical outcome, the seroepidemiology of CMV was examined in 196 demographically diverse patients with advanced HIV disease. Thirty-six (18.4%) were seronegative for CMV; 31 of these 36 (86.1%) were both non-black and non-homosexual. Invasive CMV disease developed in 41 of 160 (25.6%) seropositive patients and 0 of 36 (0%) seronegative patients (p = 0.00015). Among seropositive patients, the frequency of CMV disease varied markedly according to risk group for acquisition of HIV infection. CMV disease occurred in 2

[Retrospective (1970-1984) serological study of delta antigen and antibody. Observations on seroconversion and absence of delta in non-A, non-B hepatitis].

335 serum samples collected between 1970 and 1984 from 278 HBsAg positive patients were tested for HDV antigen and HDV antibody (HDV = hepatitis D virus; also referred to as delta virus). The first positive sample was obtained in February 1974. The prevalence of the delta coinfection fluctuated in the following years between 0 and 52% of HBV-infected subjects. It was 40% on average in subjects at risk for HBV infection (i.v. drug abusers, homosexuals and institutionalized mentally retarded subjects) and 6% in persons without risk factors. The antibody was also found in 22% of subjects in a gro

Sexual orientation and smoking: results from a multisite women's health study.

Although lesbians are believed to be at disproportionately high risk for smoking, few published studies have focused on smoking rates in this population. We examined and compared rates and demographic correlates of smoking among 550 lesbians and 279 heterosexual women in Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and in New York City in 1994-1996 using a self-administered survey questionnaire. African-American lesbians were more likely than African-American heterosexual women or White lesbians to be current smokers. For the sample as a whole, education was the most robust predictor of both current and lif

Disparities in child abuse victimization in lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual women in the Nurses' Health Study II.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research documents multiple health disparities by sexual orientation among women, yet little is known about the possible causes of these disparities. One underlying factor may be heightened risk for abuse victimization in childhood in lesbian and bisexual women. METHODS: Using survey data from 63,028 women participating in the Nurses' Health Study II, we investigated sexual orientation group differences in emotional, physical, and sexual abuse in childhood and adolescence. Multivariable log-binomial and linear regression models were used to examine orientation gr

Differences Among Current Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Users, Former Users, and Nonusers in a Community Sample in Two Midwestern U.S. Cities: Implications for Interventions to Promote PrEP Uptake and Adherence.

Disparate rates of HIV infection among Black MSM and TGW emphasize the need for interventions designed to overcome obstacles to increasing PrEP adoption within these populations. This study compared PrEP-use groups on a variety of attitudinal and behavioral factors related to PrEP adoption. Regression analysis confirmed that current and former users demonstrated greater PrEP knowledge and communicated more frequently to friends about PrEP and its benefits than nonusers. Former users exhibited more positive attitudes and perceived less stigma regarding PrEP use than other groups. Current users
