Intelligent Headband System for Evaluating Rehabilitation Effectiveness.

Stroke is an acute cerebrovascular condition causing damage to cranial nerves and requires subsequent rehabilitation treatment. In clinical practice, the effectiveness of rehabilitation is usually subjectively assessed by experienced physicians or using global prognostic scales. Several brain imaging techniques, such as positron emission tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography angiography, can be applied in rehabilitation effectiveness evaluation, but their complexity and long measurement times limit the activity of patients during measurement. This paper pro

A systematic analysis of the joint effects of ganglion cells, lagged LGN cells, and intercortical inhibition on spatiotemporal processing and direction selectivity.

Simple cells in the visual cortex process spatial as well as temporal information of the visual stream and enable the perception of motion information. Previous work suggests different mechanisms associated with direction selectivity, such as a temporal offset in thalamocortical input stream through lagged and non-lagged cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), or solely from intercortical inhibition, or through a baseline selectivity provided by the thalamocortical connection tuned by intercortical inhibition. While there exists a large corpus of models for spatiotemporal receptive fiel

Investigating frontoparietal networks and activation in children with mathematics learning difficulties: Cases with different deficit profiles.

Approximately 15%-20% of school-aged children suffer from mathematics learning difficulties (MLD). Most children with developmental dyscalculia (DD) or MLD also have comorbid cognitive deficits. Recent literature suggests that research should focus on uncovering the neural underpinnings of MLD across more inclusive samples, rather than limiting studies to pure cases of DD or MLD with highly stringent inclusion criteria. Therefore, this study aims to identify neural aberrancies that may be common across multiple MLD cases with different deficit profiles. Nine MLD cases and 45 typically developi

A machine learning surrogate model for fast approximation of simulated microwave ablation zones.

Microwave ablation (MWA) is a minimally invasive therapy for liver, lung, and kidney tumors. Computational modeling using finite element methods (FEMs) can simulate ablation zones but is computationally expensive and unsuitable for interactive use. This study develops and evaluates a machine learning surrogate model to rapidly approximate 50 °C isothermal contours from FEM simulations of MWA, enabling faster computational exploration. A feedforward neural network was trained on 2625 FEM simulations incorporating tumor geometry and dielectric properties. Predictions were compared with FEM-deriv

SABPI-Net: A Structure-Aware Bidirectional Proxy Interaction Network for Infantile Retinal Disease Diagnosis.

Delayed treatment of infantile retinal disease can reduce its effectiveness and may cause severe and irreversible damage. Automated diagnosis of infant retinal diseases faces challenges including subtle early lesions, diverse clinical phenotypes, imaging variations, and imbalanced data. To address these, which cannot be well addressed by existing general foundation models, we propose structure-aware bidirectional proxy interaction network (SABPI-Net) in a universal learning framework. SABPI-Net incorporates a high-frequency mapping branch, and employs a proposed proxy interaction attention mod

An optimality-guided model of differential adaptation to opposing perturbationsa).

This paper introduces an artificial neural-network-based computational model of differential sensorimotor adaptation to opposing auditory feedback perturbations in speech. A neural Optimality Predictor generating (near-)optimal articulation plans is trained to balance maximal intelligibility and minimal articulatory effort, based on lexical, phonemic, and stylistic context. Adaptation is driven by two main mechanisms: updates of internal sensory predictors estimating sensory outcomes of articulatory plans, and updates of the Optimality Predictor. Simulations replicate experimentally observed d

Improving the Robustness of Odour Recognition with Odour-Image Data Fusion in Open-Air Settings.

Odour recognition with low-cost gas sensors is challenging in open-air settings due to the non-specificity of the sensors and environmental variability. This can be mitigated by incorporating additional information into the classification process. This paper investigates odour-image multimodality in two case-studies of increasing complexity: banana ripening in open-air environment and strawberry ripening in a glasshouse environment. Data were collected using custom acquisition platforms equipped with cameras and MOX gas sensors operated with temperature modulation. For the visual modality, ima

Reservoir computing for system identification and model predictive control.

Model predictive control (MPC), widely used for real-time control of complex dynamical systems, operates by repeatedly solving an optimization problem over a receding time horizon. Its success hinges on dynamical models that are accurate yet efficient enough for rapid online computation. Frequently, the governing models of complex systems are either unknown or computationally inefficient, forcing MPC to rely on data-driven surrogate models. Echo state networks (ESNs), a class of recurrent neural networks trained through computationally efficient ridge regression, are well-suited for this role

Detection of spiking motifs of arbitrary length in neural activity using bounded synaptic delays.

In the context of spiking neural networks, the temporal coding hypothesis is increasingly preferred over the rate coding hypothesis due to its advantages in processing speed and energy efficiency. In temporal coding, synaptic delays are crucial for processing signals with precise spike timings, known as spiking motifs. Synaptic delays are however bounded in the brain and can thus be shorter than the duration of a motif. This prevents the use of motif recognition methods that consist of setting heterogeneous delays to synchronize the input spikes on a single output neuron acting as a coincidenc

Enhanced MobileNet with multi-scale feature fusion for automated breast cancer histopathology classification.

Accurate and efficient diagnosis of breast cancer from histopathological images remains a major challenge in clinical practice due to subjective interpretation, inter-observer variability, and labor-intensive manual examination. To address these limitations, this work introduces a transfer learning-based framework for automated breast cancer classification using the Breast Cancer Histology Images (BACH) dataset. Several pre-trained deep architectures-including MobileNet, ResNet variants, EfficientNet, and Vision Transformers-were evaluated and extended with a Multi-Scale Feature Fusion (MSFF)

Framework for Rheumatoid Arthritis Assessment Using Thermal Images Based on DnCNN-MLR Hybrid Algorithm and Joint Temperature Indexing.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a slow progressive autoimmune disease. RA disproportionately affects women due to hormonal and immune variations. During pregnancy, hormonal and immune system changes vary drastically and may lead to RA. Traditional diagnostic techniques are blood biomarkers and clinical assessments. The above methods fail to detect RA at earlier stage due to subclinical inflammation and pregnancy-related physiological changes. Thermal imaging, as a non-invasive and radiation-free approach, can reveal temperature asymmetries across inflamed joints, offering a safer diag

SPMFE-UNet: shape perception and multi-scale features enhancement UNet for robust abdominal organ and skin lesion segmentation.

Convolutional neural networks demonstrate strong performance in medical image segmentation but face clinically significant challenges due to the morphological diversity of anatomical targets-including substantial variations in shape, scale, and position. To overcome these limitations, we propose shape perception and multi-scale features enhancement UNet, a novel architecture designed to jointly learn discriminative geometric features (shapes and scales) for robust target perception. The proposed framework designs two synergistic core modules to address the challenges of anatomical shape and sc

Metadata Conditioning via Feature-Wise Linear Modulation for Multi-Domain 3D Abdominal Segmentation: A Comparative Study Between U-Net and nnU-Net.

Automatic 3D abdominal organ segmentation in magnetic resonance imaging presents a major challenge: data heterogeneity, caused by differences in acquisition protocol, contrast, spatial resolution, and imaging characteristics, which can degrade model generalization. This work investigates the use of FiLM (Feature-wise Linear Modulation) as a metadata-conditioning mechanism to improve the contextual adaptation of 3D segmentation networks. To this end, two reference architectures, U-Net and nnU-Net v2, were compared in both their baseline versions and their FiLM-conditioned variants. The evaluati

QuantumNeuroXAI: a quantum-inspired deep learning framework with explainability for brain signal analysis and neurological disorder detection.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive, high-temporal-resolution method for diagnosing and monitoring neurological disorders. Deep learning has recently substantially enhanced the state of the art for automated EEG analysis. However, many of the currently applied paradigms are still challenged by limited generalisation across datasets, vulnerability to noise or preprocessing changes, and the absence of interpretable decision rules. Additionally, many deep learning models operate like black boxes, which limits their use in clinical settings where interpretability and trust are key. Alth

Efficient Limb Range of Motion Analysis from a Monocular Camera for Edge Devices.

Traditional limb kinematic analysis relies on manual goniometer measurements. With computer vision advancements, integrating RGB cameras can minimize manual labor. Although deep learning-based cameras aim to offer the same ease as manual goniometers, previous approaches have prioritized accuracy over efficiency and cost on PC-based devices. Nevertheless, healthcare providers require a high-performance, low-cost, camera-based tool for assessing upper and lower limb range of motion (ROM). To address this, we propose a lightweight, fast, deep learning model to estimate a human pose and utilize pr

Deep Ensemble for Central Serous Microscopic Retinopathy Detection in Retinal Optical Coherence Tomographic Images.

The retina is an important part of the eye that aids in focusing light and visual recognition to the brain. Hence, its damage causes vision loss in the human eye. Central serous retinopathy is a common retinal disorder in which serous detachment occurs at the posterior pole of the retina. Therefore, detection of CSR at an early stage with good accuracy can decrease the rate of vision loss and recover the vision to normal conditions. In the past, numerous manual techniques have been devised for CSR detection; nevertheless, they have demonstrated imprecision and unreliability. Thus, the deep lea
