A common modular design of nervous systems originating in soft-bodied invertebrates.

Nervous systems of vertebrates and invertebrates show a common modular theme in the flow of information for cost-benefit decisions. Sensory … rates, these stages are mediated by forebrain pallial derivatives for incentive and directionality (olfactory bulb, cerebral cortex, pallial amygdala, etc.) interacting with hypothalamus (homeostasis, motivation, and reward) for action selection in the forebrain basal ganglia, the mid/hindbrain reticular formation as a premotor translator for posture, locomotion …

Performance of αSynuclein RT-QuIC in relation to neuropathological staging of Lewy body disease.

Currently, there is a need for diagnostic markers in Lewy body disorders (LBD). α-synuclein (αSyn) RT-QuIC has emerged as a promising assay … with LB pathology in the cortex (97% sensitivity) vs. cases with no LBs or LBs present only in the olfactory bulb (93% specificity). However, the sensitivity was low, only 50%, for cases with LB pathology restricted to the brainstem or amygdala, not affecting the allocortex or neocortex. In conclusion, αSyn RT-QuIC of CSF samples is highly sensitive and specifi …

CHARGE syndrome presenting with persistent hypoglycemia: case report and overview of the main genetic syndromes associated with neonatal hypoglycemia.

BACKGROUND: CHARGE syndrome (CS) is an autosomal dominant genetic condition whose recognition in the neonatal period is complicated by consi … iring therapy. A brain MRI was performed, documenting thinning of the optic nerves, non-displayable olfactory bulbs and dysmorphic corpus callosum. An eye examination revealed bilateral chorioretinal coloboma. Temporal bone CT scan showed absence of the semicircular canals. The unexpected findings of coloboma and absence of semicircular canals led to the suspici …

Early-in-life neuroanatomical and behavioural trajectories in a triple transgenic model of Alzheimer's disease.

Animal models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be used to determine the progressive neurodegeneration characteristics of AD in vivo using mag … rved decreases over time in the control mice in the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, cerebellum, and olfactory bulb. In many of these cases, we note a delay in the attainment of peak volume in the 3xTgs relative to the control group, suggesting a possible neurodevelopmental and maturational delay given the likely over-expression of AD-related pathology from birth …

Respiration Modulates Olfactory Memory Consolidation in Humans.

In mammals respiratory-locked hippocampal rhythms are implicated in the scaffolding and transfer of information between sensory and memory networks. These oscillations are entrained by nasal respiration and driven by the olfactory bulb. They then travel to the piriform cortex where they propagate further downstream to the hippocampus and modulate neural processes critical for memory formation. In humans, bypassing nasal airflow through mouth-breathing abolishes these rhythms and impacts encoding as well as recognition processes thereby reducing memory performance. It has been hypothesized that…

Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism revisited.

Impaired testicular function, i.e., hypogonadism, can result from a primary testicular disorder (hypergonadotropic) or occur secondary to hy … useful. In Kallmann syndrome, cerebral MRI can show an anomalous morphology or even absence of the olfactory bulb. Therapy for hypogonadotropic hypogonadism depends on the patient's desire for future fertility. Hormone replacement with testosterone is the classic treatment for hypogonadism. Androgen replacement is indicated for men who already have children or …

Differences in the distribution of GABA- and GAD-immunoreactive neurons in the anterior and posterior piriform cortex of rats.

There is accumulating evidence of anterior-posterior differences in the susceptibility of the piriform cortex to seizure induction and to fu … he activity of neighbouring deep pyramidal cells which receive dense excitatory input from both the olfactory bulb and distant pyramidal cells in the more anterior and posterior parts of the piriform cortex at the same time, thus increasing the risk of paroxysmal activation within this restricted area. Association between Airport-Related Ultrafine Particles and Risk of Malignant Brain Cancer: A Multiethnic Cohort Study.

Ultrafine particles (UFP; diameter less than or equal to 100 nm) may reach the brain via systemic circulation or the olfactory tract and have been implicated in the risk of brain tumors. The effects of airport-related UFP on the risk of brain tumors are not known. Here we determined the association between airport-related UFP and risk of incident malignant brain cancer (n = 155) and meningioma (n = 420) diagnosed during 16.4 years of follow-up among 75,936 men and women residing in Los Angeles County from the Multiethnic Cohort study. UFP exposure from aircrafts was estimated for participants

Cocaine self-administration in Wistar-Kyoto rats: a behavioral and biochemical analysis.

Depression and cocaine abuse disorders are common concurrent diagnoses. In the present study, we employed Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats that showed a depressive-like phenotype to study intravenous cocaine self-administration and extinction/reinstatement procedures. We also investigated the basal tissue level of neurotransmitters, their metabolites and plasma corticosterone (CORT) concentrations in WKY rats, bulbectomized (OBX) rats, and control rats. The WKY rats exhibited an attenuation of the cocaine-associated lever presses and cocaine intake during the acquisition/maintenance of cocaine self-adm

Olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation into spinal cord prolongs the survival of mutant SOD1(G93A) ALS rats through neuroprotection and remyelination.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressively fatal, incurable, neurodegenerative disorder. In this study, we investigated whether olfactory ensheathing cells (OEC) transplantation could provide protection to motor neurons and enable remyelination in mutant SOD1(G93A) transgenic rats with ALS. Seventy-two rats were divided into four groups: SOD1(G93A) rats (n = 20); medium+SOD1(G93A) rats (n = 20); OECs+SOD1(G93A) rats (n = 24); and another eight wild-type rats were used as controls. About 5 μL (1 × 10(5)) OECs in DF12 medium was injected into the dorsal funiculus of the thoracic spin

Dysregulation of Semaphorin7A/β1-integrin signaling leads to defective GnRH-1 cell migration, abnormal gonadal development and altered fertility.

Reproduction in mammals is dependent on the function of specific neurons that secrete gonadotropin-releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1). These neurons originate prenatally in the nasal placode and migrate into the forebrain along the olfactory-vomeronasal nerves. Alterations in this migratory process lead to defective GnRH-1 secretion, resulting in heterogeneous genetic disorders such as idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH), and other reproductive diseases characterized by the reduction or failure of sexual competence. Combining mouse genetics with in vitro models, we demonstrate that Semaph
