Type of maltreatment as a predictor of mental health service use for children in foster care.

This study examined predictors of utilization of mental health services among children and adolescents in foster care. Of particular interest was whether the type of maltreatment was related to utilization of services. Subjects were 662 children ages 2-17 who were in foster care for at least 5 months. Service utilization, demographic, and behavioral data were collected through interviews with the subjects' caretakers. Type of maltreatment data were collected from Child Welfare case records. Fifty-six percent of the subjects had received mental health services. Children removed from their homes

Behavioral and environmental characteristics of treated and untreated enuretic children and matched nonenuretic controls.

This correlational study investigated possible behavioral, parental, and environmental differences in enuretic children who were either receiving or not receiving treatment for bed-wetting. The subjects wer 5- to 12-year-old children who were nocturnally incontinent at least once a week and physically normal in all other respects. Seventeen of these youngsters were receiving pharmacologic treatment for enuresis (clinical enuretic group) and 20 were not (nonclinical enuretic group). Clinical enuretic children were older and wet more frequently than youngsters whose parents had not sought treatm

Unveiling the Aha! moment: A computational account of insight in active inference.

Insight, also referred to as the "Aha!" moment, is a distinctive cognitive phenomenon in which an idea or solution to a problem suddenly emerges into consciousness. Although the literature describes it extensively, the nature of its distinctive cognitive and affective mechanisms remains poorly understood. In this paper, we formalize a computational approach to insight grounded in the active inference framework. By modeling insight as Bayesian model reduction in a modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Task, we show that the model can reproduce a broader computational profile associated with insight,

Who Seeks Treatment When Medicine Opens the Door to Pathological Gambling Patients-Psychiatric Comorbidity and Heavy Predominance of Online Gambling.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed treatment-seeking behavior and patient characteristics in pathological gambling focusing on psychiatric comorbidity, particularly in a setting of heavy exposure to online gambling. This study aimed to address patient characteristics in a novel health care-based treatment modality for pathological gambling, including potential associations between gambling types, psychiatric comorbidity, and gender. METHODS: All patients undergoing structured assessment between January 2016 and April 2017 were included (N = 106), and patient records were reviewed for coocc

Identity processes and coping strategies in college students: short-term longitudinal dynamics and the role of personality.

Coping strategies and identity processes are hypothesized to influence one another over time. This three-wave longitudinal study (N = 458; 84.9% women) examined, for the first time, how and to what extent identity processes (i.e., commitment making, identification with commitment, exploration in breadth, exploration in depth, and ruminative exploration) and coping strategies (i.e., problem solving, social support seeking, and avoidance) predicted one another over time. Cross-lagged analyses indicated that processes of identity exploration seemed especially to be intertwined with different copi

The current status of behavioral psychotherapy: theory and practice.

Behavioral psychotherapy has become one of the definitive treatments available for the relief of psychiatric suffering. Although hardly a panacea for all ills, the behavioral approach is the treatment of choice for certain selected problems. Behavioral methods make their contribution in the context of general psychiatric management and often must be used in conjunction with other treatment. The theoretical and practical aspects of behavioral psychotherapy have changed a great deal over the past few years and continue to evolve rapidly. Although useful molecular theories are emerging to guide t

Caregiver and self-report of mental health symptoms in 9-year old children with prenatal cocaine exposure.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of prenatal cocaine exposure on mental health symptoms in 9-year old children controlling for potential confounders. METHODS: 332 children (170 prenatally cocaine-exposed (PCE), 162 non cocaine-exposed (NCE) were assessed using self (Dominic Interactive; DI) and caregiver report (Child Behavior Checklist; CBCL). RESULTS: Higher levels of PCE were associated with caregiver report of clinically elevated aggressive and delinquent behavior. With each increased unit of PCE, children were 1.3 times more likely to be rated as aggressive (OR=1.30, 95% CI: 1.02-1.67, p

Analyzing the impact of power loss reduction in radial distribution network using diverse distributed generators by utilizing ZIP load models.

Distributed generators (DGs) are recent emerging technologies which are executed in distribution system (DS) to reduce power losses (PLs). However, optimal location and sizing of DG (OLSDG) remain a challenging combinatorial optimization problem due to its large search space and load uncertainties. Numerous scholars attempted to effectively handle this optimization problem characterized by a fixed load model (constant power (CP)), which fails to represent the real-world consumer behavior. This assumption causes a research gap, as practical DS is mainly dependent on characteristics of voltage m

Behavior change techniques in a care partner-assisted oral health intervention for people with mild dementia: a secondary mixed-methods analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Oral hygiene declines early in mild dementia (MD), yet few interventions specify which behavior change techniques (BCTs) drive improvement. We examined the use of BCTs in relation to oral health outcomes in a care-partner-assisted intervention for persons living with MD. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a secondary convergent mixed-methods design, we analyzed the coaching arm of a three-arm randomized trial. Seventeen dyads (persons living with MD-care partners) completed four coaching sessions (68 coaching session transcripts). Seventeen BCTs were specified for u

Risk and Protective Factors for Self-Harm in a Population-Based Sample of Transgender Youth.

This study sought to identify factors distinguishing transgender/gender non-conforming (GNC) adolescents across three groups: no self-harm, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) only, and NSSI and suicide attempt (NSSI + SA). Data were from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey. The final analytic sample included 1,635 transgender/GNC students in grades 9 and 11. Logistic regression analyses determined factors that best distinguished transgender/GNC students who reported self-harm (NSSI only or NSSI + SA) from those who reported no self-harm, and transgender/GNC adolescents who reported NSSI + SA from t

Guided self-help cognitive behavioral intervention for VoicEs (GiVE): study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavior therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is an effective intervention for people who hear distressing voices (auditory hallucinations). However, there continues to be a problem of poor access to CBTp. Constraints on health care funding require this problem to be addressed without a substantial increase in funding. One solution is to develop guided self-help forms of CBTp to improve access, and a symptom-specific focus on, for example, distressing voices (auditory verbal hallucinations) has the potential to enhance effectiveness. We term this cognitive behavior therapy for di

Efficacy of personalized normative feedback as a brief intervention for college student gambling: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Social influences on gambling among adolescents and adults have been well documented and may be particularly evident among college students, who have higher rates of problem and pathological gambling relative to the general population. Personalized normative feedback (PNF) is a brief intervention designed to correct misperceptions regarding the prevalence of problematic behavior by showing individuals engaging in such behaviors that their own behavior is atypical with respect to actual norms. The current randomized controlled trial evaluated a computer-delivered PNF intervention for

Right frontal cingulate cortex mediates the effect of prenatal complications on youth internalizing behaviors.

Prenatal and perinatal complications represent well-known risk factors for the future development of psychiatric disorders. Such influence might become manifested during childhood and adolescence, as key periods for brain and behavioral changes. Internalizing and externalizing behaviors in adolescence have been associated with the risk of psychiatric onset later in life. Both brain morphology and behavior seem to be affected by obstetric complications, but a clear link among these three aspects is missing. Here, we aimed at analyzing the association between prenatal and perinatal complications

Cognitive-behavioral treatment with behavioral activation for smokers with depressive symptomatology: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is an important risk factor for mental health-related problems. Numerous studies have supported a bi-directional association between cigarette smoking and depression. Despite the advances in understanding the comorbidity between both problems, the most effective psychological treatment that simultaneously targets smoking and depressive symptomatology remains unclear. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral intervention for smoking cessation with components of behavioral activation for managing depressed mood. METHOD: A single bl

Understanding parenting stress in autism spectrum disorder: a cross-sectional study exploring differences between mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: Parents of autistic children may experience high levels of stress. Prior research implicates child cognitive impairment, emotional and behavioral problems, sociodemographic factors, and autism symptoms as contributors; however, gender differences in parenting stress remain underexplored. This study compared parenting stress between mothers and fathers of autistic children and examined key predictors across stress domains. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a database including data from 160 mother-father pairs of children aged 3-15 years who had received an ASD diagnosis. Parent
