[Degenerative rupture of the hip abductors. Missed diagnosis with therapy-resistant trochanteric pain of the hips and positive Trendelenburg sign in elderly patients].

The cases of four elderly patients with persistent trochanteric pain and tears of the gluteus medius and/or gluteus minimus tendons detected in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are presented. There was no history of local trauma in any patient but three patients had a positive Trendelenburg sign. Magnetic resonance imaging showed either an obvious discontinuity of the affected tendon or an increased T2 signal above, or less specifically lateral to the greater trochanter. The presence of an elongated tendon on MRI is most likely indicative of a partial rupture of the tendon. Pain and local tend

Postural control in children with strabismus: effect of eye surgery.

The purpose of this study was to examine the postural control in children with strabismus before and after eye surgery. Control of posture is a complex multi-sensorial process relying on visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems. Reduced influence of one of such systems leads to postural adaptation due to a compensation of one of the other systems [3]. Nine children with strabismus (4-8 years old) participated in the study. Ophthalmologic, orthoptic, vestibular and postural tests were done before and twice (2 and 8 weeks) after eye surgery. Postural stability was measured by a platform (Te

Locomotor adaptations and aftereffects to resistance during walking in individuals with spinal cord injury.

Muscle activity during the swing phase of walking is influenced by proprioceptive feedback pathways. Previous studies have shown that feedback and anticipatory motor commands contribute to locomotor adaptive strategies to prolonged exposure to a resistance against leg movements during walking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether people with motor-incomplete spinal cord injuries (SCI) modulate flexor muscle activity in response to different levels of resistance in a similar way as uninjured controls. A second purpose was to determine whether people with motor-incomplete SCI have

Clinical and morphologic changes in ewes and fetuses poisoned by Ipomoea carnea subspecies fistulosa.

Intoxication with Ipomoea carnea has been reported in goats, sheep, and cattle in tropical regions worldwide. The disease has been characterized only in goats; therefore, the present study was conducted in sheep. Nine animals were fed feed rations that contained 3 different concentrations of Ipomoea carnea subsp. fistulosa. Individual intake varied between 10.5 and 135.2 g of fresh plant per kilogram of body weight (BW) per day. Animals first showed clinical signs between day 43 and day 63. The maximum survival time was 133 days. Sheep presented with weight loss and neurologic abnormalities. N

Sensory mismatch induces autonomic responses associated with hippocampal theta waves in rats.

Hippocampal (HIP) theta power increases during sensory mismatch, which has been suggested to induce motion sickness with autonomic abnormality (Zou et al., 2009 [29]). To investigate relationships between hippocampal theta rhythm and autonomic functions, theta waves in the HIP and electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded during sensory mismatch by backward translocation in awake rats. The rats were placed on a treadmill affixed to a motion stage that was translocated along a figure 8-shaped track. The rats were trained to run forward on the treadmill at the same speed as that of forward translo

Repetitive arm motion-induced fatigue affects shoulder but not endpoint position sense.

Neck/shoulder pain has previously been linked to repetitive work and muscle fatigue. We have shown that asymptomatic people performing repetitive upper limb tasks display signs of shoulder fatigue and of whole-body compensatory strategies. However, the role played by the proprioceptive system in the production of these compensatory strategies has not been studied. A group of asymptomatic adults (n = 18) performed a repetitive pointing task at shoulder height to fatigue. Before and after fatigue, they performed two position sense tasks, eyes closed: a single-joint task where they abducted their

The involuntary nature of conversion disorder.

BACKGROUND: What makes a movement feel voluntary, and what might make it feel involuntary? Motor conversion disorders are characterized by movement symptoms without a neurologic cause. Conversion movements use normal voluntary motor pathways, but the symptoms are paradoxically experienced as involuntary, or lacking in self-agency. Self-agency is the experience that one is the cause of one's own actions. The matched comparison between the prediction of the action consequences (feed-forward signal) and actual sensory feedback is believed to give rise to self-agency and has been in part associate

Case report: Neuropathic arthropathy of the hip as a sequela of undiagnosed tertiary syphilis.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic arthropathy is characterized by rapidly progressive bone destruction in the setting of impaired nociceptive and proprioceptive innervation to the involved joint. It is seen most commonly in the foot and ankle, secondary to peripheral neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus. Other less common sites of involvement may include the knee, hip, shoulder, and spine, depending on the underlying etiology. Neuropathic arthropathy can be associated with tabes dorsalis, a unique manifestation of late, tertiary neurosyphilis that may arise in individuals with untreated syphili

Genome-wide association analysis reveals a SOD1 mutation in canine degenerative myelopathy that resembles amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease prevalent in several dog breeds. Typically, the initial progressive upper motor neuron spastic and general proprioceptive ataxia in the pelvic limbs occurs at 8 years of age or older. If euthanasia is delayed, the clinical signs will ascend, causing flaccid tetraparesis and other lower motor neuron signs. DNA samples from 38 DM-affected Pembroke Welsh corgi cases and 17 related clinically normal controls were used for genome-wide association mapping, which produced the strongest associations with markers on CFA31 in a reg

Your hand or mine? The extrastriate body area.

Visual images of our own and others' body parts can be highly similar, but the types of information we wish to extract from them are highly distinct. From our own body we wish to combine visual information with, at least, somatosensory, proprioceptive and motor information in order to guide our interpretation of sensory events and our actions upon the world. For others' bodies we only have visual information available, but from that we can derive much useful social information including their age, health, gender, emotional state and intentions. Consequently, a challenge for the brain is to sor

Time course and distribution of inflammatory and neurodegenerative events suggest structural bases for the pathogenesis of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Murine models of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) are important vehicles for studying the effects of genetic manipulation on disease processes related to multiple sclerosis (MS). Currently, a comprehensive assessment of EAE pathogenesis with respect to inflammatory and degenerating neuronal elements is lacking. By using Fluoro-jade histochemistry to mark neurodegeneration and dual immunostaining to follow T-cell, microglial, and vascular responses, the time course and distribution of pathological events in EAE was surveyed. C57BL/6J mice were killed at 7, 10, 14, 21 or 35 days a

Clinical and immunopathologic alterations in rhesus macaques affected with globoid cell leukodystrophy.

Globoid cell leukodystrophy, or Krabbe's disease, is a severe disorder of the central and peripheral nervous system caused by the absence of galactocerebrosidase (GALC) activity. Herein, we describe the clinical, neuropathological, histochemical, and immunohistological features observed in rhesus macaques affected with Krabbe's disease. Clinical signs included pronounced muscle tremors of head and limbs, difficulty ambulating, ataxia, hypermetria, proprioceptive deficits, and respiratory abnormalities. Histopathologically, all animals presented with evidence of demyelination in the peripheral

Effects of a two-diopter vertical prism on posture.

Postural control in upright stance requires the central integration of visual, vestibular, somatosensory (as cutaneous receptors) and proprioceptive (as joint receptors) inputs. Clinical studies seem to indicate an association between vertical heterophoria (VH) and balance control. The purpose of the study was to simulate a VH and examine its influence on body stabilisation in quiet stance. We studied 15 healthy subjects (25.6+/-3.0 years). The postural stability was measured with a platform under the following conditions: normal viewing, with a two-diopter prism base down placed on the domina

Neural mechanisms of imitation and 'mirror neuron' functioning in autistic spectrum disorder.

An association between autistic spectrum disorder and imitative impairment might result from dysfunction in mirror neurons (MNs) that serve to relate observed actions to motor codings. To explore this hypothesis, we employed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) protocol previously used to identify the neural substrate of imitation, and human MN function, to compare 16 adolescent males of normal intelligence with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and age, sex and IQ matched controls. In the control group, in accord with previous findings, we identified activity attributable to MNs in a

Deficient internal models for planning hand-object interactions in apraxia.

Motor imagery (MI) has been associated with planning stages of motor production, and in particular, with internal models that predict the sensory consequences of motor commands and specify the motor commands required to achieve a given outcome. In this study we investigated several predictions derived from the hypothesis that ideomotor apraxia (IM), a deficit in pantomime and imitation of skilled actions, may be attributable in part to deficits in internal models for planning object-related actions, in the face of relatively intact on-line, feedback-driven control of action. This hypothesis pr

Mother-Child touch patterns in infant feeding disorders: relation to maternal, child, and environmental factors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine mother and child's touch patterns in infant feeding disorders within a transactional framework. METHOD: Infants (aged 9-34 months) referred to a community-based clinic were diagnosed with feeding disorders (n = 20) or other primary disorder (n = 27) and were case matched with nonreferred controls (n = 47). Mother-child play and feeding were observed and the home environment was assessed. Microcoding detected touch patterns, response to partner's touch, and proximity at play. Relational behaviors were coded during feeding. RESULTS: Compared with infants with other primar

Many substances may be the source of dizziness or transient equilibrium disturbances due to dysfunction of the CNS or to an impairment of visual or proprioceptive informations. Other agents are responsible for drop of arterial pressure by changing position, including antihypertensive drugs, alpha-blocking agents used in urology, antipsychotics, cyclic antidepressants, vasodilators and nitrates, dopaminergic antiparkinson drugs, sedatives, etc. Only drug with true ototoxic properties will be discussed here, namely substances that are able to damage the inner ear (cochlear or vestibular damage)

Compared effects of hindlimb unloading versus terrestrial deafferentation on muscular properties of the rat soleus.

Hindlimb unloading is known to induce some neuromuscular changes especially in postural muscles such as the soleus. Our goal was to determine the role of proprioceptive inputs on these modifications by comparing soleus muscle properties of rats being either hindlimb unloaded or terrestrial deafferented. Under deep anesthesia, a first group of rats were submitted to a bilateral deafferentation (DEAF group, n = 6) performed by section of the dorsal roots L(3) to L(5) after laminectomy. A second group of rats was submitted to a hindlimb-unloading period (HU group, n = 6). After 14 days, the morph

The role of parietal cortex in awareness of self-generated movements: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Awareness of self-generated movements arises from comparing motor plans, and the accompanying (hypothetical) efference copy, with the visual and proprioceptive consequences of movement. Here we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to investigate the role of a posterior region in the superior parietal lobule (SPL) in this process. Nine healthy volunteers performed a finger extension actively and passively while wearing a CyberGlove; the glove recorded these (actual) finger movements and used this information in real time to move a virtual hand displayed on a computer screen.
