Impaired visuocortical discrimination learning of socially conditioned stimuli in social anxiety.

In search of causative factors of social anxiety disorder (SAD), classical conditioning has been discussed as a potential trigger mechanism for many years. Recent findings suggest that the social relevance of the unconditioned stimulus (US) might play a major role in learning theories of SAD. Thus, this study applied a social conditioning paradigm with disorder-relevant US to examine the electrocortical correlates of affective learning. Twenty-four high socially anxious (HSA) and 23 age- and gender-matched low socially anxious (LSA) subjects were conditioned to 3 different faces flickering at

Cortical tremor (FCMTE: familial cortical myoclonic tremor with epilepsy).

For 15 years, 50 Japanese and European families with cortical myoclonic tremor and epilepsy were reported in the literature under various names. More recently, the acronym familial cortical myoclonic tremor with epilepsy (FCMTE) has been proposed for this new clinical entity based on both clinical and electrophysiological criteria: irregular postural myoclonic tremor of the distal limbs, familial history of epilepsy, autosomal dominant inheritance, and a rather benign outcome. The diagnosis is confirmed by electrophysiological features favoring cortical reflex myoclonus (enhanced C reflex at r

Direct measurement of free radicals in the brain cortex and the blood serum after nociceptive stimulation in rats.

The concentrations of ROS were measured in samples of the sensorimotor brain cortex and in the rat blood. We measured the following parameters: The six lines spectra, nitroxide radical, free hydroxyl radical and singleton oxygen. Their concentration was measured under physiological conditions, after the nociceptive stimulation and after the application of melatonin, both in normal and stimulated animals. In the brain cortex only the singleton oxygen decreased after the nociceptive stimulation, whereas the nitroxide radicals and six lines spectra increased. The free hydroxyl radicals did not ch

Sleep modifies glutamate decarboxylase mRNA within the barrel cortex of rats after a mystacial whisker trim.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Determine the effects of time of day and sleep deprivation on glutamate decarboxylase 67,000 MW (GAD67) mRNA during cortical synaptic reorganization induced by a unilateral trimming of the mystacial vibrissae in rats. DESIGN: Two experiments were conducted--One measured GAD67 mRNA in the barrel cortex at 3 or 6 h after a unilateral whisker cut at either light or dark onset; the other measured GAD67 mRNA after a unilateral whisker cut at light onset with or without sleep deprivation. SETTING: University-based Research Laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Sprague-Dawley rats (250-350 g

Abnormalities of the balance between inhibition and excitation in the motor cortex of patients with cortical myoclonus.

Patients with cortical myoclonus may have purely focal or multifocal jerks, or they may have additional bilateral or generalized jerks, suggesting the spread of excitatory myoclonic activity between the cerebral hemispheres and across the sensorimotor cortex. The factors contributing to this spread of activity were investigated in 10 patients with multifocal cortical myoclonus and eight patients with multifocal and bilateral or generalized cortical myoclonus. The two groups were termed 'non- spreaders' and 'spreaders' respectively. Eight of the patients were also epileptic. Motor thresholds to

Evoked potentials in inherited ataxias: a multimodal electrophysiological study.

A multimodal electrophysiological study, including median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs), motor cortical stimulation (CS) and brainstem evoked potentials (BAEPs), was performed on 34 patients with hereditary ataxias (HAs): 15 with Friedreich's disease (FD), 10 with early onset cerebellar ataxia (EOCA), and 9 with autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia (ADCA). A higher incidence of abnormal central motor conduction was observed in FD than in EOCA patients, but was never observed in ADCA. A relationship between central motor conduction abnormalities and disease duration and clinical

Characteristics of midbrain control of spinal nociceptive neurons and nonsomatosensory parameters in the pentobarbital-anesthetized rat.

1. GABAergic mechanisms in the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) have been proposed to control the activity of descending antinociceptive systems and defensive behavior. Here, the effect of neuronal disinhibition by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAA) receptor blockade at midbrain sites on spinal neuronal responses to noxious and innocuous skin stimulation was quantitatively characterized. It was compared with the effect of direct neuronal excitation by glutamate microinjections or electrical stimulation at identical sites. Changes in mean arterial blood pressure and other nonsomatosensory respon

A thalamic terminus of the lateral cervical nucleus: the lateral division of the posterior nuclear group.

The submodality and receptive field properties of single units in the lateral cervical nucleus (LCN) of barbiturate anesthetized cats were studied with glass microelectrodes. In other experiments, a region of the posterior thalamus containing neurons with properties comparable to those seen in the LCN was examined with tungsten microelectrodes. The responses of most units in the LCN reflected a major input from large myelinated afferent fibers innervating guard hairs but no input from Pacinian afferent fibers. The large size of the receptive fields indicated that excitatory input converged sel

Tremor.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tremors can be encountered in a variety of disease states but the most common causes are Parkinson disease and essential tremor. This review was undertaken to highlight advances in the field during the last 12 months. RECENT FINDINGS: Kinetic tremor may be more prominent in essential tremor than postural tremor. Clinically Parkinson disease and essential tremor may be confused with each other but it may be possible to distinguish between these two nitrites using sophisticated electrophysiology. Monosymptomatic rest tremor has recently been shown to be associated with decrea

Contribution of corticospinal tract damage to cortical motor reorganization after a single clinical attack of multiple sclerosis.

The objectives of this study were to assess whether cortical motor reorganization in the early phase of multiple sclerosis (MS) is correlated with the clinical presentation and with specific damage to the corticospinal tract. Twenty patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and serial MR findings indicative of MS were selected. In 10 patients the CIS was hemiparesis (group H), and in 10 patients the CIS was optic neuritis (group ON). There were no significant differences in age, disease duration, total T2 lesion load (LL), and total T1 LL between group H and group ON. Ten age-matched he

That this diffuse nuclear immunostain represented aggregated huntingtin was confirmed by immunohistochemistry with a polyglutamine-specific antibody, which required formic acid antigen retrieval to expose its epitope. By 6 months of age …

Distribution of androgen and estrogen receptor mRNA-containing cells in the rat brain: an in situ hybridization study.

The distribution of cells that express mRNA encoding the androgen (AR) and estrogen (ER) receptors was examined in adult male and female rats by using in situ hybridization. Specific labeling appeared to be largely, if not entirely, localized to neurons. AR and ER mRNA-containing neurons were widely distributed in the rat brain, with the greatest densities of cells in the hypothalamus, and in regions of the telencephalon that provide strong inputs in the medial preoptic and ventromedial nuclei, each of which is thought to play a key role in mediating the hormonal control of copulatory behavior

Cortico-limbic responsiveness to high-calorie food images predicts weight status among women.

OBJECTIVES: Excessive weight gain and obesity are currently among the world's major threats to health. Women show significantly higher rates of obesity and eating disorders relative to men, but the factors contributing to these gender differences remain uncertain. We examined the correlations between regional brain responses to images of high-calorie versus low-calorie foods and self-reported motivational status, including ratings of general appetite, overeating propensity, state hunger and desire for specific foods. SUBJECTS: Thirty-eight healthy right-handed adults (22 male; 16 female) ages

Neural correlates of olfactory processing in congenital blindness.

Adaptive neuroplastic changes have been well documented in congenitally blind individuals for the processing of tactile and auditory information. By contrast, very few studies have investigated olfactory processing in the absence of vision. There is ample evidence that the olfactory system is highly plastic and that blind individuals rely more on their sense of smell than the sighted do. The olfactory system in the blind is therefore likely to be susceptible to cross-modal changes similar to those observed for the tactile and auditory modalities. To test this hypothesis, we used functional mag

Thinning of sensorimotor cortices in children with Tourette syndrome.

The basal ganglia portions of cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits have consistently been implicated in the pathogenesis of Tourette syndrome, whereas motor and sensorimotor cortices in these circuits have been relatively overlooked. Using magnetic resonance imaging, we detected cortical thinning in frontal and parietal lobes in groups of Tourette syndrome children relative to controls. This thinning was most prominent in ventral portions of the sensory and motor homunculi that control the facial, orolingual and laryngeal musculature that is commonly involved in tic symptoms. Corre
