The effect of interleukin-4 (IL-4) on the induction of intestinal mast cells and cytokine profiles during Strongyloides ratti infection was studied using IL-4 knockout (IL-4 KO) mice. The antigen-specific proliferative response of mesenteric lymph node cells was not impaired in IL-4 KO mice. The number of intestinal mast cells induced in IL-4 KO mice during S. ratti infection was 2- to 3-fold lower than that observed in WT mice. The skin being exposed to the environment is commonly the portal of entry for parasites. Infections with parasites characteristically produce cutaneous lesions as well as systemic disease in humans. In the past, parasitic diseases were limited to their endemic areas. With the relative ease of worldwide travel, however, they are appearing with increasing frequency in the United States and other developed countries. This article describes the characteristic cutaneous findings of parasitic diseases that physicians in the United States may encounter in their medical practice.

Information about interleukin-3 (IL-3) effects in vivo is limited compared with the in vitro effects. We found that a repetitive injection of a low dose of recombinant IL-3 induced protection against intestinal worms of Strongyloides ratti in C57BL/6 mice. In recent years, a total of 152 calves have died suddenly on three farms in the southern part of Japan which used sawdust as litter. Calves often died within a few minutes of a violent fall without showing previous clinical signs. On necropsy of these cases, only a slight lesion was observed, although all showed heavy infection with Strongyloides papillosus (SPL). The nutrition, intensity of parasitism, complete blood count, and the serum immunoglobulin concentration of 63 children were studied. Hyperimmunoglobulinemia was present in the vast majority of subjects regardless of their nutritional status. The IgA and IgM concentrations were moderately increased, the IgG was increased threefold, and the IgE was markedly increased in concentration. The concentrations of the immunoglobulins were related significantly to the intensity of parasitism.
