Background. Anchorage control is an essential part of orthodontic treatment planning, especially in adult patients who demand a more convenient treatment. Zoledronic acid (ZA) is an effective choice to address this problem. It is the most potent member of the bisphosphonates family that has an inhibitory effect on bone resorption by suppressing osteoclast function. Therefore, ZA might be a good option for orthodontic anchorage control. The current study evaluated the effect of local administration of Zolena (ZA made in Iran) on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and root and bone resorption. Met

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) is a prominent public health issue. To date, subjective symptom complaints primarily dictate diagnostic and treatment approaches. As such, the description and qualification of these symptoms in the mTBI patient population is of great value. This manuscript describes the symptoms of mTBI patients as compared to controls in a larger study designed to examine the use of vestibular testing to diagnose mTBI. Five symptom clusters were identified: Post-Traumatic Headache/Migraine, Nausea, Emotional/Affective, Fatigue/Malaise, and Dizziness/Mild Cognitive Impairment

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) adversely affects both young and old and is a growing public health concern. The common functional, psychological, and cognitive changes associated with TBI and recent trends in its management, such as recommending sub-threshold aerobic activity, and multi-modal treatment strategies including vestibular rehabilitation, suggest that Tai Chi/Qigong could be beneficial for TBI. Tai Chi and Qigong are aerobic mind-body practices with known benefits for maintaining health and mitigating chronic disease. To date, no systematic review has been published assess

OBJECT: Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are rare in the pediatric population. Most often, these lesions manifest as a bilateral disease process in the setting of neurofibromatosis Type 2. Even in the absence of additional clinical diagnostic criteria, the presentation of a unilateral VS in a young patient may be a harbinger of future penetrance for this hereditary tumor syndrome.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the charts of a cohort of 7 patients who presented with apparently sporadic, unilateral VSs. These patients had previously undergone surgery via translabyrinthine, retrosigm

PURPOSE: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a standard treatment modality for vestibular schwannomas (VSs). However, there is a paucity of data on tumor control and neurological preservation for larger VSs. We aimed to investigate the long-term effectiveness of SRS for Koos grade IV compared with I-III VSs.
METHODS: We included 452 patients with VSs (50 Koos grade IV and 402 Koos grade I‒III) who were treated with SRS at our institution from 1990 to 2021. Tumor control and functional preservation were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared between groups with the log-rank test.

Sensorineural systems play a crucial role in the diagnosis, treatment and management of several neurological disorders. The function of the eye and ear represents a unique window for testing various conditions in cognitive decline or dementia. Touch and smell have also been found to be strongly involved in neurodegenerative conditions, and their decline has been significantly associated with the progression of the disease; hence, the idea that restoring sensory function in cognitively impaired adults might enable a significant improvement in their cognitive status, reducing the worldwide incid

BACKGROUND: Long considered as the primary conduit to connect the inner ear and the subarachnoid space, the cochlear aqueduct has been shown obstructed in a paradoxically high percentage of population. This study aimed to elucidate the role of modiolus in perilymph-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) communication.
METHODS: A cohort of patients diagnosed with unilateral vestibular schwannoma (VS) were prospectively enrolled in this single-center observational study. On inner ear-specific magnetic resonance images, delayed enhancement (4 h after intravenous contrast administration) was quantitatively ev

Here we present a patient with persistent central visual oscillopsia, review the literature on this condition, and report results from an experimental intervention using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. A 57-year-old man reported persistent visual oscillopsia after a traumatic brain injury suffered 20 years earlier. Symptoms were presumed to be of cortical origin given his normal eye movements, eye stability, and peripheral vestibular function. Furthermore, he reported oscillopsia with visual imagery during eye closure. Occipital lesions damaging white matter connections identifie

The pathophysiology of postural instability in Parkinson's disease remains poorly understood. Normal postural function depends in part on the ability of the postural control system to integrate visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular sensory information. Degeneration of cholinergic neurons in the brainstem pedunculopontine nucleus complex and their thalamic efferent terminals has been implicated in postural control deficits in Parkinson's disease. Our aim was to investigate the relationship of cholinergic terminal loss in thalamus and cortex, and nigrostriatal dopaminergic denervation, on postu

Balance is controlled by visual, somatosensory, and vestibular sensory inputs. Older adults rely on visual information for balance control, and those with a history of falls have been reported to exhibit higher visual dependence. Additionally, high visual dependence may affect velocity-related parameters, such as gait speed. However, whether visual dependence is related to specific measures of postural control in older adults remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between visual dependence and balance in older adults. This was a single-center, cross-sectional, observ

OBJECTIVE: Vertigo and dizziness are more common than expected in children and adolescents. The sleep quality of children with dizziness is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep quality, vertigo severity, and duration of dizziness in children with positional vertigo.
METHODS: This study consisted of 26 children with dizziness (19 female, 7 male, and mean age 14.38 ± 2.02 years). Positional tests were performed using video Frenzel glasses. The participants' sleep quality was assessed using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), the severity of vertig

BACKGROUND: Biallelic pathogenic variants in CDH23 can cause Usher syndrome type I (USH1), typically characterized by sensorineural hearing loss, variable vestibular areflexia, and a progressive form of rod-cone dystrophy. While missense variants in CDH23 can cause DFNB12 deafness, other variants can affect the cadherin 23 function, more severely causing Usher syndrome type I D. The main purpose of our study is to describe the genotypes and phenotypes of patients with mild retinitis pigmentosa (RP), including sector RP with two pathogenic variants in CDH23.

BACKGROUND: Sensorial non-motor symptoms (NMSs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) still lack appropriate investigation in clinical practice. This study aimed to assess if and to what extent auditory dysfunction is associated with other NMSs in PD and its impact on patient's quality of life (QoL).
METHODS: We selected patients with idiopathic PD, without other concomitant neurological diseases, dementia, or diagnosis of any audiological/vestibular disease. Demographic and clinical data were collected. Patients underwent otoscopic examination, audiological testing with pure tone audiometry (PTA) and

Tinnitus is a very frequent symptom affecting 10% of the general population. It corresponds to the perception of an internal noise that can severely impair the quality of life. Tinnitus management requires a multidisciplinary approach in which neuromodulation and neurosurgery tend to play major roles. Classification of tinnitus separates objective tinnitus (i.e., tinnitus that can be heard or recorded) from the more frequent subjective tinnitus (i.e., tinnitus only perceived by the patient). Objective tinnitus is either pulsatile synchronous with heartbeat or asynchronous. In the former, appro
