Methamphetamine and sildenafil (Viagra) use are linked to unprotected receptive and insertive anal sex, respectively, in a sample of men who have sex with men.

OBJECTIVES: There is evidence that methamphetamine and sildenafil (Viagra) use are associated with sexual risk behaviour among men who have sex with men (MSM). We investigated the association of methamphetamine, sildenafil, and other substance use with unprotected receptive and insertive anal sex among MSM by conducting an encounter specific analysis. METHODS: Data were from a cross sectional, community based survey of MSM in San Francisco regarding behaviour during their most recent anal sex encounter. Mulitvariate regression analysed independent associations of specific substance use and de

HIV risk behaviour and HIV testing of psychiatric patients in Melbourne.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with chronic mental illnesses constitute an important risk group for HIV infection overseas. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of risk behaviours associated with HIV transmission and factors associated with HIV testing in psychiatric patients in Melbourne. METHODS: Inpatients and outpatients completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire which covered demographics, psychiatric diagnosis, risk behaviour, and HIV education and testing. RESULTS: Of 145 participants, 60% were male and 55.2% had schizophrenia. Injecting drug use (IDU) was reported by 15.9%, a

Autopsy findings on patients with AIDS in Taiwan.

At National Taiwan University Hospital, from 1986 to 1996, autopsies were performed on 16 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. There were 15 men and 1 woman. Fourteen of these male patients had contracted the disease as a result of sexual practice, among which 9 were homosexual, 1 was bisexual and 4 were heterosexual. One of the patients had become infected by sharing a syringe during intravenous drug use. The female was a sex worker. Among these patients, only 2 had been tested for HIV before developing AIDS. On autopsy, lymphoid depletion and thymus atrophy were found in all pat

Patterns of risk behaviour for patients with sexually transmitted diseases and surveillance for human immunodeficiency virus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of establishing a sentinel human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) surveillance system involving patients with sexually transmitted diseases attending private clinics and a government sexually transmitted disease clinic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Information on risk behaviours for HIV infection were also collected. A total of 84 female and 91 male patients were interviewed and tested for HIV infection; 41.7% of the women reported working as prostitutes, other occupations included masseuses, hairdressers, waitresses, salesgirls, receptionists, facto

[Survival of patients following the diagnosis of AIDS in the Amsterdam region, 1982-1991].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the survival of 975 AIDS patients diagnosed in the Amsterdam region between 1982 and 1991, with follow-up until December 31st, 1992. METHODS: Analysis of data from the active AIDS surveillance system for the Amsterdam region at the Municipal Health Service. RESULTS: Amsterdam region residents had 1, 2 and 3-year survivals of 69.8%, 42.6% and 21.2%, respectively. The 5-year survival was 7.7%. The median survival probability for all patients showed great improvement, from 9 months in 1982-1985 to 26 months in 1990. For patients initially presenting with only Pneumocystis

[Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteremia and HIV infection. Retrospective study of 41 episodes in 30 patients].

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary infections and bacteraemia, essentially due to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, are frequently reported in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We retrospectively analyzed episodes of bacteraemia in HIV-infected patients to determine whether supplementary risk factors could be ascertained and whether it would be advisable to propose vaccination. METHODS: From June 1986 to February 1992, 41 episodes of bacteraemia in 30 HIV-infected patients were observed in 7 different wards. Data on age, sex, risk group, Centers for Disease

Epidemiology of thrombocytopenia in HIV infection.

Thrombocytopenia is a known complication of human immunodeficiency virus Type-1 (HIV-1) infection, and more data need to be collected on its frequency, severity, and clinical sequelae. We determined the frequency of thrombocytopenia and its relationship to other HIV infection characteristics from a review of records of 1004 HIV-infected patients attending two outpatient clinics in Washington, D.C. The self-reported sources of HIV-1 exposure were male homosexual activity (68%), bisexual activity (10%), heterosexual activity (6%), and intravenous drug use (15%). Fifty-nine percent of the individ

Does the association between substance use and sexual risk behaviors among high school students vary by sexual identity?

OBJECTIVE: Limited information exists on whether associations between substance use behaviors (SUBs) and sexual risk behaviors (SRBs) vary by sexual identity. METHODS: Data from the 2015 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (n = 15,624), were analyzed to assess associations between SUBs (cigarette smoking, alcohol use, binge drinking, marijuana use, prescription drug misuse, injection drug use, illicit drug use) and SRBs (sexual activity, number of partners, condom use). Logistic regression models calculated adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR), stratified by sexual identity, and interaction effec

Experienced HIV-Related Stigma and Psychological Distress in Peruvian Sexual and Gender Minorities: A Longitudinal Study to Explore Mediating Roles of Internalized HIV-Related Stigma and Coping Styles.

Experiencing HIV-related stigma has important impacts on the mental health of people living with HIV, which has implications for treatment adherence, disease progression, and health outcomes. The impacts of stigma are particularly important to consider among sexual and gender minorities, who often face a disproportionate burden of HIV. To address the implications of stigma in these key populations, we leveraged a longitudinal study conducted among Peruvian sexual and gender minorities to compare the relative effects of multiple mediators affecting the relationship between experienced HIV-relat

Increasing frequency of heterosexually transmitted AIDS in southern Florida: artifact or reality?

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases reported as the result of heterosexual contact have been increasing in the United States, with Florida reporting a disproportionate number. We investigated 168 such AIDS cases from southern Florida. After follow-up, 50 (30%) patients were reclassified into other transmission categories. The data suggest that the increased rate of heterosexually acquired AIDS cases reported from southern Florida was partially related to misclassification of risk.

Comparing Men Who Have Sex With Men Only and Men Who Have Sex With Men and Women Visiting a Public Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Men reporting same-sex behaviors are disproportionately impacted by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Differences in clinical characteristics and STIs in men who have sex with men only (MSMO), with men and women (MSMW), and with women only (MSW) are not well described. METHODS: First visits to 2 Baltimore City STI clinics 2011-2016 from MSMO and MSMW compared with an age-matched random sample of MSW were analyzed. Acute STI (aSTI) included chlamydia, gonorrhea, nongonococcal urethritis, and primary or secondary syphilis. χ2 Tests and logistic regression examined associations

Decisional Balance and Contemplation Ladder to Support Interventions for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Uptake and Persistence.

Fewer than 60,000 males-inclusive of all sexual identities-were prescribed HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) by mid-2017 in the United States. Efforts to increase PrEP uptake among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM), in particular, are ongoing in research and practice settings, but few tools exist to support interventions. We aimed to develop and validate tools to support motivational interviewing interventions for PrEP. In 2017, a national sample of HIV-negative GBM of relatively high socioeconomic status (n = 786) was asked about sexual behaviors that encompass Center

Psychosocial vulnerability and HIV-related sexual risk among men who have sex with men and women in the United States.

In the U.S., HIV is concentrated among men who have sex with men (MSM), some of whom have had female partners (MSMW). MSMW are disproportionately impacted by psychosocial vulnerabilities, like depression and substance use that increase sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV risk. Research on psychosocial vulnerability and HIV-related sexual risk among MSMW is warranted to reduce infection transmission among MSM and to prevent bridging to female partners. We analyzed data from Wave IV (2007-2008) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to assess psychosocial vulnerability

Sexual solicitation of Latino male day laborers by other men.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the likelihood of Latino day laborers being solicited for sex by other men. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 450 Latino day laborers were recruited in Los Angeles, California, from July to September 2005. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine which day laborers were more likely to be solicited and subsequently to have sex. RESULTS: Thirty-eight percent reported being solicited for sex by another man while seeking work. Those solicited were more likely to live longer in the US, be more educated and screen positive for drug dependence. Of those solicited, 9.4% had sex w

It's all about "connecting": reasons for drug use among Latino gay men living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Research on Latino gay men drug use is limited. This study explores the narratives of 16 Latino drug-using gay men living in the San Francisco Bay Area by exploring the role social settings play in their drug use, as well as by identifying the reasons and motivations for drug-use. Using a thematic content analysis, 16 interviews with LGM living in the San Francisco Bay Area were analyzed. Results suggest LGMhave different reasons for drug use across multiple settings. Participants use drugs to cope with their sexual identity, to feel like part of the mainstream gay community, and to reduce sex

Socio-demographic Characteristics, Sexual and Test-Seeking Behaviours Amongst Men Who have Sex with Both Men and Women: Results from a Bio-behavioural Survey in 13 European Cities.

Within the MSM population, men who have sex with both men and women (MSMW) are identified as a high-risk group both worldwide and in Europe. In a multi-centred bio-behavioural cross-sectional study, we aimed to assess the relationship(s) between socio-demographic factors, stigma, sexual behavioural patterns, test seeking behaviour and sero-status amongst MSMW. A multi-level analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with being MSMW versus Men who have Sex with Men Only (MSMO). A total of 4901 MSM were enrolled across the 13 study sites. Participants were categorised as MSMW in the 1

Sexual behaviors and sexual violence: adolescents with opposite-, same-, or both-sex partners.

OBJECTIVE: To describe sexual behaviors, sexual violence, and sexual identity among a population-based sample of adolescents according to the sex of their sex partners, considering separately those with partners of both sexes. METHODS: From the 2005-2007 New York City Youth Risk Behavior Surveys, 3805 male and 3456 female adolescents reported having had sex and the sex of their sexual contacts. Subgroups were constructed: only opposite-sex partners; only same-sex partners; and partners of both sexes (both-sex partners). Weighted prevalence, risk behaviors (eg, using drugs/alcohol with sex), a
